30 weeks pregnant, Midwife thinks I may have the norovirus, how worried should I be?

I am 30 weeks pregnant and suddenly started feeling dizzy and a bit sick this afternoon.

Only thrown up once (and that was a tiny little bit), so still hoping its not!

But if it is, how worried should I be about the baby given that I could have a vicious stomach bug and get dehydrated etc?!

Hey, a fellow Discworld fan!

Your little one will be quite safe in there and it does not quite sound like norovirus to me, at least not so far.

Just take it easy and make sure you do not become dehydrated, there will be no ill effect on you or the baby if you eat less or don't eat for a bit but ring the doctor if you cannot keep any fluid down.

it's just a D&V bug

it lasts a day or so

don't panic

(norovirus is the collective name for all bugs that cause D&V by the way)

I just had three days of upset stomach. Thankfully not being sick but feeling sick all the time and not keeping anything inside. Was not really able to eat and lost 4lbs over the weekend. Am 36 weeks pg with twins. Saw the midwife yesterday (had been to the loo 6 times by the time of my appt at 9:20am - sorry if TMI) and she wasn't all that worried, although did suggest I speak to the duty doc to be sure.

Anyway, hardly ate yesterday but felt a bit better and today feel about 80% human. No upset stomach today and although the thought of some foods really turns my stomach I have managed porridge, pitta bread and chocolate with no ill effect!

Advice from duty doc was to keep hydrated, any liquid is better than nothing, and don't try to eat if you don't fancy it, just try to let the bug go through and run it's course.

Good luck!

Angua - make sure you rest - take paracetamol if you have a high temperature - and drink as much as possible, sipping if necessary. Flat coke/lemonade is good, dry biscuits and I also find crisps help. (salt is good if you are getting dehydrated)

belgo · 08/01/2008 15:25

oh and contact your GP if you do have a high temperature.

Oh yesterday I got some "frites" (basically skinny chips) from M&S and stuck them in the oven. They tasted great, stayed inside and really made me feel better. I was wandering round and they were the only thing that took my fancy.

I had D&V whan 34 weeks pg with DS2. I rested as much as poss, and I tried to drink as much water as apossible

Just sip the water though, because gulping might make you sick.

OK, Thank you very much for all your reassurrance, still not sure I have it, (though do keep feeling sick), but just wanted to check what I should do if I do have it (IYSWIM)

Many thanks all of you, going to go and throw up again now!

As long as you don't get dehydrated, there's no reason to panic.

I got a norovirus in 2005 whilst barely into my second trimester with DD2.

Whilst DH and DD1 threw it off after just a day, I wound up with uncontrolled vomitting and an out of hours appointment at midnight at our local infirmary, whereupon I was immediately admitted after throwing up blood in front of the nurse.

I had to get IV rehydration and a jab to stop the vomitting, but baby was fine!
