Why has my midwife given me a different EDD to every single website I've looked at ?

Every website I have checked my EDD on has given 1st August as my due date - however, midwife has come up with 3rd August, how does that work ?

there is a leap year this year...also your cycle length will alter it if it is more or less than 28 days.

goingfor3 · 08/01/2008 14:02

One day out would mean that the fact it's a leap year hasn't been accounted for not sure about 2 though. You will have a dating scan soon which will give you another date probably - congratulations!!

bobsmum · 08/01/2008 14:03

You'll get a different date again after your dating scan.

I thought I was due 5th May this year, but the scan said 25th April!!

I think no matter how closely you;ve been watching your dates, no one can really know for sure when you conceived.

FoghornLeghorn · 08/01/2008 14:08

I am expecting my date to change as my cycles were never the usual 28 days, they always varied but midwife came up with 3rd on her little wheel thing before I'd even mentioned that - would've thought the websites and her date would've matched.
I've not got any of my DC's EDD's right so far !

i have only ever got one out of 3 EDD's right by my dates!

lenaschildminding · 08/01/2008 14:10

Baby's EDD are only a guide, my DS1 was due 18th sept, arrived 22nd, DS2 was due 6th Oct, arrived 10th October and DD's EDD was originally 18th September, then 22nd September and she arrived on the 26th!

FoghornLeghorn · 08/01/2008 14:24

I know they are only a guide - I was wondering why different places give you different dates yet they are based on the same information.
Will see what scan says

Guaranteed to be different again!

Gp's and midwives tend to use those wheel like calendars, maybe one theory could be they are old and other places are using more recent methods? Don't know really, though one things for sure... they come when they are ready!

Good luck!

Where I am midwives give you a rough due date using a wheel and LMP. Each brand of wheel can come out different. Wheels don't allow for any menstrual cycle length other than 28 days. This is working with the assumption that you ovulated and conceived exactly mid-cycle (conception can happen on ANY day of your cycle). They do not allow for leap years. Don't know how all the different websites do it, but the 'accurate' way to work out 40 weeks from your LMP is get a calendar and count the weeks, stopping when you get to 40. A normal term for pregnancy is anything between 38 and 42 weeks, so that will give you a good idea of which month baby is expected. It'll turn up when it wants to. Of course, blooming awkward things!
Working out from LMP was a system invented in the 1800s- really. It is really good in the absence of any other information, but can easily come out several weeks different to scan dates- in these cases they usually go with scan dates assuming your scan was before 24 weeks- after that the scan date is +/- 10 days, so not as helpful.
Hope that's far too much information!!

mumofk · 08/01/2008 15:50

Finally, wouldn't worry at all at a couple of days difference- I would question the midwife if it had come up an week or more difference when you're basing it on the same information- and you are sure you've got it right!!

Parofleurmapu · 08/01/2008 18:30

I have had a different due date every time i go for a scan they now range from 29th May to 11th June !!!
so just gonna set back and wait hehe!!!

PrismManchip · 08/01/2008 18:32

I had 3 EDDs
Since it was an ivf pregnancy and could be dated to the hour I thought I'd go with theirs! But the GP put another one on my form, and the midwife had another one again.
It probably makes a difference re induction: so if you want to leave it as long as possible before you are induced, then use the latest one you have whenever possible.

FurryFox · 08/01/2008 19:02

My NHS trust works out due dates as 40 weeks and 2 days, not just the usual 40 weeks from LMP. My MW has no idea why they do this but they do. So all online calculators and books gave me a date 2 days earlier than MW. Perhaps yours is tha same.

FoghornLeghorn · 08/01/2008 22:00

Aha furryfox - that's seems to be my answer !
I wasn't at all concerned or worried about the difference it dates, I was just confused how they came up with different dates

some m/w's use the "9months + 7 days since LMP" rule, rather than the "40wks since LMP" rule, so depending on which months are in your 9month period, it can result in dates being different by a day or 2. I think most (if not all) online sites used the 40wk one.
