Any cholestasis mums?

I developed cholestasis in my previous pregnancy at 36 weeks. I'm now 37 weeks with my current pregnancy and have begun itching badly over the last few days. I've been monitored throughout this pregnancy and all bloods have come out clear so far. But the last few days I've really noticed the itching ramping up especially at night.

I went for an additional blood test today but I won't get the results until after the weekend now and I feel really worried.

The information online is so conflicting with some saying it can cause major fetal distress and others saying it doesn't increase the risk of anything sinister.

I guess I'm just looking for reassurance from other mums who've been through this. Were you and baby ok? Were you induced early or medicated to manage the condition? Last time
I had the condition I was induced so I'm not sure if that will happen again if the results come back badly.

I had it in my pregnancy, and i had been itching for some time before my blood tests showed levels high enough to diagnose it. Once i was diagnosed i was induced that evening, i think at 37.5 weeks. So i would try not to worry too much, but given you are 37 weeks i expect if the tests show you have it, they will want to induce.

Thank you for replying. I guess I'm worrying because I'll have to wait until after the weekend for my results and I keep worrying that it will be harming the baby :(

Will you not hear the results because the lab isnt working so they wont be done, or because the midwife/gp surgery is closed?
Its just I rang the maternity ward and they could access my results before my gp opened and they asked me to come in. This was a long time ago so things may have changed a lot!
I was induced at 37 and my baby was fine.

TheFantastic7 · 09/04/2022 08:44

You should be able to ring your maternity ward even at the weekend, explain the itchiness has got worse and you've had bloods taken. If the levels are high enough they will probably ask you to come in and be induced. I've had it with 3 pregnancies and was induced at 37 weeks with all 3 x

ChloeHel · 09/04/2022 09:59

If your bloods were taken at the hospital then the maternity would have them. So you won’t have to wait all weekend, if it’s really high they will call you.

I remember I had to go in for bloods and then they rang me within 24 hours to say I had to go in. I was 38 weeks and was just over the threshold so they gave me some medication and a sweep the week after.

Fishfingersfortea44 · 09/04/2022 10:23

My bloods were taken at the midwives and sent off to hospital for testing. Midwives have said it will be them who call me but they're shut until Monday :(

In that case i would ring the maternity ward. Nothing lost if they say they cant access the results.

ThatBlastCameFromTheDeathStar · 09/04/2022 10:34

I had it last pregnancy (and dreading I'll get it again this time). I was diagnosed at 37 weeks, given meds and monitored every 2 days. I was Induced at 39 weeks.

I echo others and would ring the maternity ward for the results.

I had cholestasis with my first. The hospital I was under didn't fill me with any confidence that they were clued up on the condition so my partner and I did our own extensive research. The risk depends on your levels so I would definitely call your midwife to get the results. My levels were just over the threshold so after considering the risks, I kindly refused an early induction (multiple times) and was medicated to manage the condition. Baby is absolutely fine.

flowerbutt · 09/04/2022 10:42

Should've said I gave birth at 41 weeks.

Peoniesandcream · 09/04/2022 10:50

I was finally diagnosed at 37 and a half weeks, monitored and regular bloods. By the time I was 39 weeks the levels were sky high so I was induced.

If I were you I’d ring MAU and say your having intense itching and explain you had cholestasis with the last pregnancy, they will get you in straight away for bloods and be able to contact you tomorrow with the results.
GrowBabyGrow · 10/04/2022 12:03

Those who were diagnosed, did the itching start just at night? I've been woken up with unbelievably itchy feet for the last couple of weeks and my midwife took bloods Monday to check for cholestatis but said she's not worried because my feet would be constantly itchy... She said she'd get in touch if the results showed anything but not if they were normal. I'm 29 wks

flowerbutt · 10/04/2022 12:26

@GrowBabyGrow mine was only at night on my feet. I was fine during the day. I'm sure she would've contacted you by now but it might be worth giving your midwife a quick call just to confirm that the results were normal and give yourself peace of mind.
