Food aversion

Hi, I'm 14 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I've had severe food aversion since week 6. I haven't ate a proper meal in about two months.

The thought and smell of food seems toxic. I can look at an image of a burger and it looks like poison. If by chance I do smell meat, I am vomiting for 24 hours straight without stopping.

The only things that are staying down are Frosties (without milk), wheat based bread and watermelon. It's not a good diet at all but I can barely stomach them too.

I have spoke to the midwife and GP, who recommended me anti sickness tablets, although they said this won't help my food aversion. Hence, I have decided not to take the tablets.

I'm very worried as I am not getting a good diet at all. It's taking a huge toll on my mental and physical health. I feel miserable and depressed all the time.

I have no sex drive, don't find anything appealing and hate leaving my bedroom, as I'm scared to face a smell trigger.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Any advice much appreciated x

I was the same. I basically ate what I wanted when I wanted (which was pretty much rubbish - I tried making vegetable soup so at least I knew I was getting some veggies). One thing I did eat ok with was fruit.

I'm so sorry, this sounds awful. I hope you get some respite soon. I am very much not an expert but from what I have read, and heard anecdotally from friends, is that you can only eat what you can manage and to try not to panic. As long as you are eating something and staying hydrated, that seems fair at the moment. Plenty of people I know survived on crisps and cereal while feeling dreadful, and all babies/toddlers are doing just fine. Hopefully this won't last too much longer for you. Of course, keep checking in with your doctor or midwife for proper medical advice and reassurance! They will be happy to support you Smile

In my last pregnancy the only meal I could stomach was some white fish with peas on the side. Literally nothing else till about 14/15 wks and then it started to ease off.
I took a multivitamin and iron with my folic acid.
I think the most important thing is not to get dehydrated. Are you able to keep water down?
I really would try the anti sickness tablets.
Throwing up less often has to be a good thing.
And speak to the midwife again. You're obviously feeling really down, which is not unusual at all, I promise. And it's good to ask for support.
(Oh, and I had a very healthy, 7lb6oz baby despite barely eating till second trimester )

I was the same literally couldn't eat for 9 months and what I did eat was rubbish like crisps and yoghurts.

DS is fine. take your vitamins, stay hydrated, eat what you fancy, when you fancy it (be it cereal and watermelon for 9 months) all will be well.

I was also the same, I took the offer of the tablets because the thought of being sick was just as bad as not being able to stomach food, they actually did help, I still can't stomach meats, but i have been able to eat a better variety of foods since taking them, maybe there worth a try for you?
