What to wear in labour?

So my question is.. what do I wear!? This is baby #3. First was a water birth so Just wore a vest top, then breastfed dd pretty soon after. Ds was partial water birth so again I just had a vest top then could breast feed.

This time I have GD so I think they will monitor good glucose and it's looking like I will be induced. So do I wear just baggy t shirt type night dress to labour in, but then that would be tricky to then breast feed. Or do I wear a nursing night dress?!

I don't want to spend a fortune on a night dress as I dont wear them at home. But I'd rather be covered up more if I'm not birthing in a pool.

Not sure this ramble makes sense, just wondered what others wore x

Hospital gown ? I had a part water birth so had best top but then changed into a marks and Spencer’s night dress. It was about £10 but I wore it a lot after birth as it was very comfortable.
I think I’ll be asking for a hospital gown if they have it next time. I have pjs for wearing after birth/ shower but nothing for during

@Letsbekindplease thank you for your reply. I'll check out m and s, didnt think to try there. It's like anytime they put nursing or maternity in front of something it doubles the price 😒 x

I got lucky and picked up a knee length type nightie from Sainsburys with some buttons at the top which made it easy to breast feed. Also with my first I got a sort of nightie shirt so again had buttons I could just undo.

Night shirts / nighties x

LadyMacduff · 07/04/2022 21:02

I wore tshirt dress as well. I wanted something I would feel decent in walking from the car park. I'm pretty sure i was just in a bra by the end of birth anyway, so skin to skin was fine, and then I took long loose vests, a cardigan and soft leggings for afterwards.

Snoopy28x · 07/04/2022 21:14

Last time I was being stitched up one end while they handed me ds to try and feed. And the thought of then having to try and wriggle out of a t shirt night dress to try and feed.. when your already totally exposed just makes me feel uncomfortable. I want to have something to cover up a bit. I know its ridiculous as you dont really care during labour it's just after that.

I wore a floaty dress during labour but then when it was time to push I just said to the midwife, do you mind if I just take it off 😂 so then when DD was born I had her straight on my chest and didn’t have to faff about when trying to undress to breastfeed. So yes I was completely naked giving birth! Whatever you are most comfortable with I say!

I had a c section (emergency) but my plan was to wear a second hand maternity night dress with buttons (for ease of BF and skin to skin). I decided to go for second hand as was prepared for blood etc and didn't wish to spend the high amounts for nursing/maternity. Boohoo.com have good ones if you wanted new (mine are from there but we're second hand) they have come in handy with BF at night too!

ChloeHel · 07/04/2022 21:35

I just read your above post about not being exposed so ignore my being naked post haha. You could just get a button up nightie like this

This is my favourite one I have (I got from eBay for 99p & postage) boohoo also have offer codes regularly and there are more affordable options. Check out eBay and Vinted if you're comfortable with second hand!

TheTonEffect · 07/04/2022 21:39

I asked for a hospital gown once it started to get intense. I ended up in an emergency section anyway so just as well really Grin

Roses1221 · 07/04/2022 21:43

A long vest top which covers bum and comes down to mid thighs. Thin straps were easy to pull down for skin to skin and feeding

Snoopy28x · 07/04/2022 21:52

Thanks ladies! I've just ordered 2 button down night dresses off etsy! I never thought to check there. Only £10 each! Thank you for your replies!

Getting nervous this time. The other 2 came when they were ready, but with talk of induction with this one I dont know how long I'll be in for as I know it can take days sometimes. So want to be over prepared!

I didn’t wear much. I went in unexpected wearing soaking wet jean shorts and a vest top. Was the height of summer and my water broke while out and contractions started lol I’m sure everyone knew I hadn’t peed myself as I was heavily pregnant with a huge wet patch on my shorts! I removed my shorts and put a sheet over that area and when it was time for baby to come I removed everything else as I wanted skint to skin the second baby came out. I kept the sheet over my chest while giving birth then when baby came out I removed the sheet for a second baby went on my chest and sheet went over us both

Tinadecember · 08/04/2022 08:46

with my first baby I had all good intentions of wearing lovely girly maternity pyjamas, reality was that I had slept in my partners t-shirt the night that I went into labour and went into hospital wearing his t-shirt and lounge pants Grin

Snoopy28x · 08/04/2022 08:50

@Tinadecember haha yeah I remember with my first all the planning of the hospital bag etc. I was in 10 hours maybe start to finish. Barely touched my bag. 2nd time 11 hours used my change of outfit as my waters broke all over what I went in wearing.

This time I'm probably going to be induced due to GD and growing a giant baby! 34 today's so they are talking 38 week induction. So I dont know what to expect and how long I'll be there for. So it's more unexpected! X

I wore a breastfeeding nightie. It wasn't expensive, I wore it through pregnancy so I didn't mind. I also figured if I needed to wonder around I would be covered without the faff of getting dressed. I was induced.

Qwill · 08/04/2022 10:39

I took loads and ended up just staying in the hospital gown!! Found it really easy to breastfeed in as they gave me two to wear, one on the back and one on the front.

welshladywhois40 · 08/04/2022 18:40

I took a few oversized wide neck cheap primark t shirts - they covered my bump and then I had a sheet on my bottom half. I had to be continuously monitored so had to spend most time on the bed.

Once baby was here - we did skin to skin etc with the loose t shirt still on. Then once I felt recovered enough shower and nursing pyjamas on.

I took a few so I could change if needed - didn't fancy being stuck in the same t shirt for days - ended up being a 4 hour labour

Pitstop1986 · 08/04/2022 20:45

I was wearing a silky type baggy top when I went into labour. Wore it throughout the birth, then when DD came out, DH whipped it off so that I could put her to my breast straight away

QueenLagertha · 09/04/2022 10:13

I took a bikini 😂 ended up in the water with not a stitch on me. When I got out I had a t shirt nightie to wear
