Is this the right amount of baby clothes?

Our baby will be born in early July, so I decided to buy more bodysuit/vest type things than babygros, and put trousers and a cardigan over the top if it is chilly. That way, if it's a hot day I can just put them in a bodysuit, and layer with trousers and cardies if it turns cooler. Do you think that's a good idea?

So I got 3 newborn bodysuits, 3 newborn babygros, 2 x 0-3 month babygros (as I'm going to use leggings/trousers over bodysuits mostly), then 10 x 0-3 month rompers and vests, 7 x leggings/stretchy trousers, 2 x 0-3 month cardigans.

Do you think that's enough? And is my layering approach practical? I just don't want to buy loads of babygros/sleepsuits if it turns out it's too hot for them, and I figure a bodysuit+leggings+cardy is basically the same thing but more flexible.

The trousers are a mix of soft stretchy cotton, and light linen, so I think they should be comfy enough to sleep in and good for both hot and cooler weather

I perdonally don't think it is quite enough as you would want a couple of spare outfits in the change bag at all times.

But really it depends on how regularly you are willing to do laundry and what your baby is like.

However, I wouldn't buy anything more yourself as you are bound to get given some clothing and even if it isn't what you would choose it will be ideal for spares!

You need more newborn body suits. What happens when your baby pukes/poos on 3 suits in the same morning ? 3 doesn’t give you time to wash and dry them. Double it and you might scrape by. Only stick with the 3 if your baby is likely to be 9 or 10 pounds at birth and won’t fit in them.

Flopsy88 · 07/04/2022 09:54

If I were you I'd get a few more packs of vests and sleepsuits. You could go through three in a few hours if they get wet/pooped/sicked on

Hiddenvoice · 07/04/2022 09:56

I think you’ll need more baby grows and sleep suits.
I’m 38 weeks pregnant and a lot of clothes I bought earlier might not actually fit my baby so I’d suggest even holding off for a little while longer or buying a wider range of sizes.
I was advised by midwives that newborns are more comfortable in sleepsuits/ baby grows as there are no tight bands around their stomach.

I was hoping to use 0-3 month bodysuits when they were newborn too, as I heard people do that because they grow out of newborn stuff so quickly. But that's good to know!

I think you will need more, but can maybe hold off to see what you are given and how big your baby is. Mine were both in newborn size for about a month, so 3 outfits would not have been enough, though some babies go straight into 0-3. One of mine was also prone to been sick, so went through 4-5 outfits a day, the other not so much.

Duracellbunnywannabe · 07/04/2022 09:59

No. My children would have vomited/poo on three lots of vests within 12 hours if I was lucky maybe within an hour if they were having a bad morning.

You need at least 12 vests and 12 babies. Have you asked your midwife how big she think your baby will be? Mine wouldn’t have fitted in new born.

There are always loads of good quality cheap baby clothes on baby selling pages.

Oh dear god Grin

I haven’t even begun to think about this yet and you’ve now panicked me OP! I’m due 30th June, aaaargh

Oh well, an excuse to go shopping! Wink

Flowerbug1994 · 07/04/2022 10:03

I think it all depends on how quick you can get washing done and how much you are really interested in the clothes and also your budget get what you can afford !! I absolutely love baby clothes and have been buying since I found out he was a boy at 15 weeks am 31 weeks tomorrow and have bought clothes every week. I have 12 newborn vests 15 new born growers. A nice newborn Spanish coming home outfit, 2 cardigans and a knitted jacket with knitted hat ! And I probably have double in 0-3 😭😭 just got with your budget and your gut and most shops do next day delivery now so you could have them the next day or get someone to pop to the shops for you if your really desperate xxx

Favourodds · 07/04/2022 10:03

Very sensible - newborn lasts about five minutes. I did get some upto one month bits that lasted until 8/9 weeks but I think you're in good shape. The shops will still be there once your baby arrives if you decide you need more.

Favourodds · 07/04/2022 10:05

To add, I have never had 12 of anything, I don't think I've ever had more than 5, and it's always been fine.

Pamparam · 07/04/2022 10:08

Doesn’t sound like quite enough (especially if you have a puker) also I probably wouldn’t use trousers/leggings until the umbilical cord is fully healed so would make sure I had enough sleep suits until then!

Somuchgoo · 07/04/2022 10:09

Neither of mine fitted 0-3 months for a couple of months, so I certainly wouldn't assume you could go straight to those.

I went over the top but I had at least 30 vests, 30 babygrows, a handful of leggings, maybe a dozen dresses and half a dozen cardigans before she was born. She wasnt sicky, so it was just one outfit a day (and then changing at night), but occasionally we'd get through 3 in an hour. I think 3 of each is far too little.

For my second, I packed about twice that for hospital, and was on our last clothing for our trip home.

You also need to think about how often you want to do laundry. With your current stash you'd need to do same day turnaround, which would be stressful to keep on top of.

Then remember that you'll have a spare outfit in your babybag for going out.

Ps: even in June, baby is likely to need a babygrow at night.

frenchfancy81 · 07/04/2022 10:12

I think you need lots of vests and sleepsuits. People will buy stuff so I'd be 2 more packs of each (cheap ones!) and see what people buy.

Mumdiva99 · 07/04/2022 10:14

Don't buy anymore yet as you will be given lots. (And keep everything given in it's packaging with tags on until you need to use it. If you are unsure return ASAP- even if you take a credit voucher - as lots of babu stuff gets reduced. If you are unsure swop for bigger sizes.)

The only thing you might want more of are baby grows because you will use them at night time....and can go through a couple a night if a nappy leaks.

The rest - wait and see....try trousers and layers and see how you and baby get on with them.

Lemongrass9 · 07/04/2022 10:19

My son was 7lb 9oz at birth and didn’t fit in any newborn babygros as he is quite tall and has big feet, so he was in up to 1 month until 6-8 weeks and then 0-3 until about 4.5months. Babygros are always outgrown earlier for us because of his feet. He is 7 months now and in 3-6 vests but 6-9 babygros and everything else.

And different shops are good for different things, every baby will be different.

For us, next is great for vests/footless outfits but babygros the feet are way too small, sainsburys is where we get babygros but their vests and outfits come up quite big.
Tesco leggings are getting tight around thighs and short in length but still really baggy around waist. Matalan is huge on him, he was still in newborn vests at 4 months, M&S are good but can be quite wide.

My point is you probably won’t know until baby is here and you have experimented a bit. And you also won’t know how quick they will get through outfits - we could have easily got through 5 in a morning but I have friends who could use 1 outfit for 24hrs.

Congratulations, you must be so excited to meet your little one ☺️

Pyri · 07/04/2022 10:26

You definitely don’t need loads of newborn body suits, they grow out of them so quickly that 0-3 months is absolutely fine

I think your approach sounds great, you can wait and see what your baby is like.

Mine never ever vomited and did explosive poos only about 2-3 times so would be in the same outfit all day. Yours might be the same in which case you really don’t need much; or if you have a refluxy baby then can always order more for next day delivery

You’ll get loads of gifts too btw so factor that in!

wannabeamummysobad · 07/04/2022 10:38

Wow, you are very organised!
I'm 37 weeks and have: 12x vests (0-3 months), 6 x vests (3-6 months), 9x sleep suits (0-3 months), 6 x sleep suits (3-6 months), 2 cardigans then a few outfits for >6 months (gifted).

I'm a FTM but personally my view and advice I've been given is wait until closer to your due date to buy things so you have a better idea of babies size - what if you have a premie? 0-3months will drown them. If your baby is really tall but light weight newborn won't fit.
My friend thought she was having a >10lbs baby but ended up with a 7lbs baby so nothing she bought fit and ended up having to borrow from the woman next to her.....
Add to that, with next day delivery you can get more once baby arrives.

LemonGroves · 07/04/2022 10:52

Good point about the umbilical stump! I didn't think of that

You've got enough for now, I'd say. It depends how big your family and social circle is - unless it's small, I'd wait and see what you get given by friends and family after your baby if born. I was given absolutely loads of 0-3 month stuff in the first week, I didn't buy a thing myself for that age range and I still had far too much. I got given less newborn stuff but still enough.

Worst case scenario if no one gives you anything, you can get some stuff on Amazon prime to arrive next day?

But I say this as someone incurably loathe to spend money where possible 🤣 if you'd rather just have the peace of mind that you have enough stuff and aren't bothered about ending up with too much, then you could pick up a few more sleep suits and vests perhaps x

DockOTheBay · 07/04/2022 11:08

I would wait and see how big they are. Some kids are too big to ever wear newborn clothes, others are small and wear newborn for a few weeks and would be swamped by 0-3. My daughter was small although full term and was in newborn for about 9 weeks!

Clothes are so easy to get hold of these days. Once you know what size they are, send someone out to sainsburys to pick up a few more sleepsuits and vests in the right size.

bumhug · 07/04/2022 11:15

I didn't use a single vest with both babies.

Sleepsuits for the win.

caringcarer · 07/04/2022 11:33

It depends on several things. The weight of your newborn if 6 lb will need newborn if 9 lb can probably go into 0-3 months. If your baby is sick or brings back milk much and if they poo on their clothes much. This probably depends on which nappies you choose. You will most likely be given clothes for baby as gifts so I would wait to see what I was given but just get a couple more vest with poppets between legs things.

StrawberrySanta · 07/04/2022 13:01

I think you need some in 0-1 month size as 0-3 will be too big. Newborn potentially too small. My DC were 8lb 7 and 8lb4, one of them didn't fit into newborn, one did for a week and they both wore 0-1 for 3-4 weeks.
