So if at 5 months pg, I was wearing pre-pregnancy jeans still (I am quite big and was able to stay in normal clothes for ages!); do you think I will be in those kind of clothes straight away? And is 2 sets of baby clothes enough for a hospital which chucks you out within hours if there are no complications (can get more brought in if we will have to stay longer)? I didn't think I had that much to pack until I saw how little room was left in the bag now it is all in, and am trying to prioritise coz still don't have clothes to go home in

KelaS I would go home in tracksuit bottoms, you want to be cosy.

pud1 · 08/01/2008 11:44

how long do you stay in if you have an uncomplicated birth

It depends on the hospital policy, some kick out after 6 hours!

My tum went down after DD2's birth, but not dramatically. You'll be wearing thick pads for bleeding (even if you have a CS) and you will probably not feel interested in wriggling around to get into tight clothes (sore bits, tired body, other things to think about, like how to work the car seat). Relax - you've got 6 weeks leave from exercise anyway, so I'd advise you packed a pair of baggy trackie bottoms in a dark colour.

Naetha · 08/01/2008 15:17

I made sure that when I went in I put on clean comfy clothes that I was able to wear for going home in as well. I was discharged after 16 hours (although I gave birth at midnight), but had a spare bag of clothes in the car if I was staying longer.

I had a pair of under the bump combat trousers that looked perfectly normal with or without a bump.

I certainly didn't bother with anything like a hairdryer - I was more concerned about the pain of peeing on my stitches and walking like John Wayne than what my hair was doing. Didn't even look in a mirror for 3 days.

Sarahjct · 08/01/2008 15:21

LOL ok so I'll ditch the hairdryer... I was just thinking of the funky 'after' pictures! But then I suppose no one'll give a toss what I look like!

nailpolish · 08/01/2008 15:23

what to do is take the pictures yourself so theres no chance youll be in them

if someone whips out a camera say "here, you hold baby, ill take the pic" they wont be able to refuse

plus after they take the pic you can swan off to the toilet and pee on stitches on peace/put kettle on/etc

pud1 · 08/01/2008 15:25

that is the best suggestion i have heard throughout my pregnancy. have been dreading the mum holding new baby pictures,

Size zero skinny jeans, in white. Very high heels. A crop top. Don't forget to buy a copy of Grazia magazine in case you get bored on journey home.

deegward · 08/01/2008 15:32

Sarahjt, I took a haridryer in with ds1 and used it every day, (was in for 5 days) thing I needed was a mirror! Yes very vain, but even with ds2 and was out within 12 hours had my trusty mirror so I could see the mess I was in.

Funyt story, gave birth to ds1, lost alot of blood so was not allowed to sit up bp threw the floor -- would not let them wheel me into the hall to the ward until I had my lippy on and my hair was brushed. Thought I looked great, look at the photos now nearly 8 years later and thing OMG what a mess. But I was happy!

nailpolish · 08/01/2008 15:32

oh god dino poor you!

nailpolish · 08/01/2008 15:34

come to t hink of it i took lots of photos of other people holding the dds, and they are all from the sitting position

i say sitting, i mean leaning to one side to avoid stitches and haemorrhage pain...

mumofk · 08/01/2008 15:38

Friend at work is a new grandma. She was very proud telling us all she took make up for proud new mum, helped her put it on and did her hair for her before the 'new baby' photos. She was very well meaning, but no idea what new mum thought to that. If was me I'd've been speechless with horror, but I know not everyone 'simply does not care' about appearance like I do....

tazmosis · 09/01/2008 22:54

Mitfordsisters - go up a size in pants...? I went for huge paper ones from Mothercare! Looked ridiculous but were very practical!!

hi i took some comfy stretchy velour style pants and a spare pair of mat pants just in case of accidents (needed them aswell as nobody told me how heavy the bleeding can be!!) as long as the trousers are comfy on you now they will be fine for comin home in!!
HTH and good luck with your up and coming birth
xx ei xx

I went home in pregnancy jeans - anthing comfy after a EMCS!!!!
I also work in a hospital and can say that we cant take anything electrical in to use - so I doubt patients can!
My top tips are buy a cheap pair of slippers to use in hospital and chuck them in the bin as you leave - you will not want to take them home after where they have been!
Plus re husband - put all you are likely to need as extras in one drawer in bedroom so he can be directed easily - baby stuff, more pads, nightclothes, underwear etc.....

spugs · 10/01/2008 09:08

tracky bottoms or whatever you were wearing in the first place. my stomach does go back down very quickly (or it has done with the first 2!) but you dont always realsie quite how big your arse and thighs get i remember being heart broken when i tried to put my normal jeans on when dd1 was a week old and they wouldnt go past my knees! as for appearence in those first photos, i look so puffy, knackered and shell shocked in mine there all buried somewhere and stay well out of the baby book.
