How many outfits for each stage?

Am starting to think about stocking up. I'm someone who likes to plan so would want clothes ready for newborn to 12 months. Possibly a bit longer.

How many of each type of clothes would I need?

Baby will be born August, so guessing a little sunshine before it's time to wrap up more.

Congratulations! Firstly I wouldnt stock up too much for future ages as it can be difficult to know what size your baby will be for the season.
Typically friends and family get newborn bits so I would focus on 0-3 months. I would suggest at least ten vests and 10 babygrows as a minimum - depending on if you are able to wash clothes easily at home- if you depend on a laundrette I would double that amount.
My LO in 8 months and in 12-18 months clothes at the moment, so i tend to buy him clothes for the next age when he goes a size up if that makes sense.
I really would just focus on newborn clothing, and up to 3 months. You can pick up cute little bits as you go, and may find you get gifted lots too! X

Focus on 0-3 for now then buy any size up things you like in the sale as you go.

You might be lucky and get given lots of hand me downs. I got bags full which I put in the loft until needed. I've got clothes to last until my child is 6!

Obviously will need topping up but I got bags ranging from basics for certain ages to full wardrobes. Don't buy too much in advance because you might end up with too much.

Wow. Thought there would be a bit of variation, but not 8 months to 12-18. Thank you. That's really useful advice.

We got way too much! Also everyone bought bigger saying everyone else buys smaller so we had to do an emergency run for newborn size Grin I would say if you live near a shop get 3-6 sleepsuits in each early size (newborn, 0-1, 0-3) as babies birth size will impact where they start and one or two "outfits" although they really don't need them!

We didn't know what we were having so only bought 0-3 in neutral colours, then once baby was here we bought more colourful clothes. We also didn't bother with newborn clothes as I had a feeling baby would be on bigger side. Baby arrived at 39+1 and was 8lb9oz so all the newborn stuff would have been useless. She then used to move up to the next sizes early and even now at 4 she is in 5-6 clothes, although it's to do with her height not her weight.

I'm currently 18 weeks with DC2 and we've decided not to find out again, so will do the first 0-3 neutral again then sell off or use all DD's clothes, depending on sex of baby x

I'd only go up to 6 months maximum and even then only in things you know will be needed ie sleep suits.

I agree with this. My DD was on the smaller side but generally wore the 'right' age clothing as a baby, in line with her age. So at 6 months she was wearing 3-6 and then transitioning around then to 6-9. DS on the other hand is surprisingly much much bigger, he's about to turn 6 months soon and is already wearing 9-12 month clothing!

Mine was tiny so clothes ar each stage lasted forever. Our initial problem was that we had to go out and get "tiny baby" as everything we had drowned him.

I agree with a PP about things being for the wrong season when they get to that size so generally I only bought things ahead that could span multiple seasons - so all in one vests and baby grows rather than winter woolies and coats.

Blackbirdflyintothelight · 06/04/2022 13:20

I'm a planner like you and bought loads in advance for my DD expecting her to be a big baby (because the drs and midwives did). Out she popped 6lb 10oz and slow to gain weight. She was always a size below her age I.e. at 6 months in 3-6, at 12 months in 9-12. So the seasonally appropriate stuff wasn't seasonally appropriate.
Contrast with my sister's DS who was born at 10lb and is in 6-9 months at 4 months.
I'm pregnant and due in August too and buying just sleepsuits and vests- nothing too seasonally specific.

ToCaden · 06/04/2022 16:38

Thanks guys. Glad I sought your expert advice. I'll concentrate on making sure I have stuff for 0-3 and maybe some up to six months that aren't too seasonally specific. Smile

I'm the same as you - and also due in August.

I've started with 0-3, and just been keeping an eye out for sales and cheaper bits.

This is my little 0-3 stockpile :)

RandomQuest · 06/04/2022 19:19

I think you could stock up things you know you’ll definitely need for each stage regardless of the season e.g. short sleeved vests, socks, sleepsuits (I still use those for PJs after they move on to daytime outfits). Otherwise I wouldn’t bother as you can’t always predict their growth. My second was born in February, so you’d expect 3-6 months to fit for summer but it didn’t and he actually needed 6-12 months.

Cute! I've got two so far (gifted to me). A little Harry potter suit, and a little batman one. Mine are hung up where I can see them often in the hopes it'll give me the drive to keep up with DIY on my days off.

Definitely hold back on bigger sizes for now! My LB was a little 6lb baby when born and at 15 months he's only just in 9-12 month clothes! He stayed in 0-3 months for about 5 months! Went through winter and spring and the start of summer in one size! Definitely focus on the smaller sizes for now! Congratulations! :)
