Hi all,
So I had a growth scan at 32 weeks yesterday and my baby was measured at 5lbs 9 and in the 97.6th percentile .. I am 5'10 and my husband is 6'4...am I going to have an absolute giant? Has anyone had experience with a large baby?!

Yes! I'm 5ft7 and DH is 6ft4, so not far off you!

2 babies, 1st was 10lb11 at 41+4, not a great labour, ended in forceps in theatre, but it was fine.

2nd baby, 10lb 6, buy only 38+4, c section as he was stubbornly breech. If he hadn't been breech I'd have tried another vaginal.

DD was 10lbs 13oz at 41+5 - no GD or anything, she was just incredibly long (the longest baby the hospital had ever delivered!) - at 4 she's still off the charts for height and 75th centile for weight. Had a planned section due to her estimated size and it went about as badly as a ELCS can go without mum or baby dying or being left disabled (I won't go into detail!) but it was still okay and recovery was fine.

I'll be interested to hear responses on this one. I actually discussed it with my midwife today, as my husband is 6ft2, I am 5ft11 and we were both also big babies ourselves.

She said that it is likely our baby will be big/ long, but that we have to remember we grow the baby that is right for our body, which I thought was a positive way of looking at it.

I am not that far along yet, but will be interested to see whether it is the case and we do have a 10lb baby. If so I may opt for an ELCS!

My mum had huge babies & it's definitely genetic. I said at my checking in appointment & consultant dismissed me completely.

She came in after my delivery & apologised though. All of mine were over 10lbs

Yes me! 32 week scan baby measuring approx 5lb10, normal femur measurements but tummy measuring anywhere from 35-37 week mark. Before the scan the midwife had hold of her through my stomach (she's lying transverse and you can literally hold her she pushes against my stomach so hard) and said what a chunk she'll be.

I was tested for GD, borderline pass so they're having me finger prick and diet control just in case until my 36 week growth scan and consultant appointment. I've done the first few days on my normal diet and only had one result that was bad but it was after a sugary meal. I don't usually eat a lot of sugar so that meal was unusual for me.

I was a 10lb+ baby, as was my brother, my partner and his sister. We're 5ft6 and 6ft1 so not super tall and not overweight. Think our families just make chunky babies!

She's been transverse since 20 weeks, breech for a few minutes then went back so we're looking at a c section.

Thanks @Wifflywafflywoo may I ask if diabetes runs in your family?

I'm 5ft 11 and partner 6ft 2...baby was born last November weighing 6lb 7oz...she was much smaller than they expected (I think she was 3rd centile for my height/weight)...they didn't seem bothered by partners height. She was induced early (39 weeks) for being small.

I did say I was 7lb 2oz when born (although my mam is 5ft 4) and partner was 8lb so neither of us were large babies. But again it wasn't something they took in to consideration.

Just wanted to wish you luck OP. Also remember, ultrasound weights can be very UN-accurate (mine was accurate, baby was 5g heavier than the final scan - born 2 days later).

ChickinMarango · 06/04/2022 23:01

I mean babies should be putting on 1lb every two weeks which puts you in the higher weight bracket for baby.

Both mine were suspected of being 10-11lb at birth. Firstborn was born at 37 weeks 8lb 4 (waters went early) second baby born 39+1 (induction due to big baby) 9lb 3.

Even if you do have a big baby if you are taller yourself you will be built for it. Even though was induced (lengthy process and very painful due to tilted cervix!) I had no pain relief or gas and air. Wouldn’t put me off a third so can’t have been that bad Grin

Should also add hubby is average size but I am 5’11”. Also my scans were very accurate although inductions do mean that babies are born slightly heavier due to the drip.

RicitosdeOro · 07/04/2022 11:48

Take these estimates as a guide as they can be wildly out. Big babies run in my family for sure. My two were big (one was over 11lbs and was even higher up the length percentile than weight!) and cousins all big too.
Hopefully you’ll get regular scans to monitor progress and wishing you all the best - you’ll be absolutely fine!

Nelliephant1 · 07/04/2022 11:51

They told me two days before my son was born that he was approx 7lbs. He was born two days later at 9lb 11oz so take it as it comes and don't take these things as gospel.

Thanks *@Wifflywafflywoo* may I ask if diabetes runs in your family?
Not that I'm aware of and same on my partner's side. I've been blood testing for about a week now on normal diet and only had one fail so I'm hoping I don't have GD...

With DS1 I had growth scans as they said he would be tiny he was born @40 wks he was 7lb 4oz but super long, same happened with DS2 and he was 7lb 12oz when it came to DS3 I was measuring what I should have been throughout and thought I’d have a whopper, going on what had happened in the past, they told me he would be 8-81/2 lb the day they induced me (40wks) and he was 6lb 10oz so I think it’s any ones guess
