Having an Autumn (September) baby - what do I need to have on hand?

Hi everyone! I'm 4 months pregnant with 2nd DC, I have a 4 year old who was born at the height of summer so was hoping if there are any parents out there who have had newborns in Autumn/Winter - what were your favourite/most used items? I have two dogs and we walk a lot outside (we live in Glasgow in Scotland, so lots of hill/foresty walks) but also I'm assuming there will be less hanging around in the grass outside this time around!

thanks in advance everyone Star

Stretchy wrap so you can continue walks without lugging a pram around- je porte Mon bebe so a lovely basic one that's very warm but still breathable. Baby will be ok in vest and footless sleepsuit in sling to start- add in fleecy sleepsuit/overall once it starts getting colder.

Carseat safe footmuff type thing- I got one free with my carseat and it's great.

Blankets over a bit snowsuit when tiny.

Warm/layered suitable nursing clothes- harder to get your nips out when it's colder Grin

Oh also I used weather protection cream for their faces when out for windy walks- weleda do a good one.

I had a September baby and the weather was beautiful, better than when I had my 2nd baby in mid-summer. We were able to get out for lots of walks in the pram initially, it was lovely! I had too many warm clothes in very small sizes, including a snowsuit which went unworn, I think I first used one of those in the 3-6 months size. When it started to cool down end of September/October time, the the most useful thing was a cotton lined knitted jacket from M&S (with the ears on the hood), it was lovely and warm but not too restrictive.

@JustWonderingIfYou Oooh these are very helpful and weather protection cream I would never have even thought existed thank you!!!

@Mackmama This is super helpful and encouraging - I was just about to ransack the sales for a baby snowsuit - so you think wait a little? I think we will get some cosy things in the baby box up here including a little freeze hoodie with ears and we have jackets and cosy blankets etc so maybe I'll hold off on snowsuit until later? or buy a larger size as it's bound to be miserable in December.

Thank you!!!

Depends if you're planning to walk the dogs with a pram or a sling. I did both with DC1 who was born in January and snowsuit was essential for pram walks, but they're not recommended for carrying your baby as they can overheat - the recommendation is for layers and fleecy all in ones instead.

If you have one of those travel systems for your pram where the car seat clicks in we really liked these blankets which baby can safely wear with a car seat and keeps them cosy if you're just nipping somewhere out the car without having to faff around layering baby up etc: morrck.com/

Watching with interest for my early October baby 😊

Nikki037297 · 03/04/2022 14:23

Hey I’m the same! Almost 4 year old he will be 4 this July and I’m due end of sep start of October and I’m so confused what to buy all the clothes look lovely in the shops but it’s the summer clothes and I’m thinking I will need more warmer clothes as it starts to cool down end of September but I don’t even know when the shops bring out their autumn range

Mackmama · 04/04/2022 15:04

@amorningperson, September was a lovely time to have a baby, I wish I was doing it all again! I’ve looked back on photos from when my DS was a newborn, he wore lots of long sleeved sleepsuits with a short sleeved vest underneath and dungarees with long sleeved vests underneath as well as the jacket thing I mentioned. He did wear a snowsuit eventually but more around December/January time x

Nikki037297 · 04/04/2022 15:58

So what we would by for baby girls? Iv been looking but it seams the summer range is out I did find some dress dungarees with tights but I’m unsure as my other two children are august and July lol so it was just summer
Clothes but I know newborns need to be kept warm. I’m so worried about it to be honest!

HarrietM87 · 04/04/2022 16:01

I found a star wrap useful for my autumn baby (Nov though so bit colder). I used the sling all the time as also had toddler in tow so left her in the buggy. My first was also born in summer and it was a heatwave so we didn’t really use sleeping bags for the first 3 months (co slept). Second time round had to invest in a load of new gro snugs.

Maternitynamechange · 04/04/2022 16:04

I know it sounds weird but both of my autumn babies are different in that one really feels the cold and the other is always warm and far more in vests!

MyloC · 04/04/2022 16:37

I've just read this thread and wondered if I subconsciously started it. 2nd child, first born in summer, this one due in September and I'm also from Glasgow!

Following closely 😊

annlee3817 · 04/04/2022 22:31

My first was summer, but on colder days the Tuppence and Crumble star fleece was great, perfect for using in a car seat as didn't affect the straps like thick coats can

amorningperson · 08/04/2022 08:25

haha what a coincidence @MyloC @emmajane90 @Nikki037297 - congratulations and good luck to us! I've actually been looking through the sales which have more wintery stuff- try gap baby (I found some cute stuff but lots of smaller sizes gone) and also some charity shops have had a lot of unused winter stuff come in recently around here! Some still with tags on - so good!

I will def be using wrap for first few months so that snow suit advice was really helpful @Ellebee459

So far I've gotten some longer sleeve vests, more socks and a cosy suit from Gap plus picked up some brand new Boden sleep suits from BHF in a fancy/wealthy area (best places to go charity shopping!). All ears still though if anyone has any more advice/has gotten a good item.

Thanks again everyone!

Ds was born summer, but in the sling in winter ( we live cold country), I very rarely used snowsuit. 99% of the time I used normal vest/ sleepsuit, cardigan. Then added thick socks and wooden booties, hat, thicker cardigan and mittens as needed. He would get too hot otherwise and I just wrapped my scarf or coat over him. If he wore snow suit it was those woolen thick fleece type, not thick padded waterproof type. And they just don’t fit properly.

Nikki037297 · 08/04/2022 08:33

Hah I will try that charity shopping in a wealthy area what a good idea! I have been giving all my sons clothes to a close friend who’s son has had a baby with his new girlfriend at a young age so I’m glad my sons stuff is getting well used I do love to pass down when possible. I have bought a few summer outfits incase we get any nice days but I’m thinking with my baby being due start of oct but i generally go to 38’weeks that at the back end of September there won’t really be many nice days sadly

houseargh · 08/04/2022 08:34

We didn't get a snowsuit until SEP born DD was a couple of months old (also when we bought the pram). She was in clothes in the sling until then. For when we graduated from stretchy wrap to ergobaby carrier, we found the fleecy, waterproof carrier for the latter great, used it daily for a while - meant we could keep her warm enough through the depths of winter without the whole 'what to wear in a sling' conundrum. And much cheaper than a baby wearing coat.
