Experiences of ARM induction...

I've been offered to have my waters broken as a form of induction and as i don't want any hormone drips, if this doesn't work i can then go for csection instead.

Just wondering if anyone else has had a successful ARM and gone into labour quickly? As they're only giving me 4 hours for it to work which isn't long. My eldests waters spontaneously broke and that took over 24 hours before contractions started....

Also, if it did work, how painful/intense were your contractions?

I was booked in for induction with my second but she ended up coming by herself a week beforehand. I had a lengthy induction with my first that started off with a pessary, then the drip and eventually ARM, but my consultant said to me that with second babies often that is all that is needed to get things going. In many cases your body knows what to do as it’s happened before which was the case for me! Best of luck

I had ARM with my 2nd and it was really good. Felt way more natural. They said to me soon as my waters went his head was going to be like a bowling ball hitting my cervix and start contractions and it genuinely happened like that. I've heard for other people it took a bit longer for contractions to kick in. Mine went pretty intense pretty quickly and think I got to the pushing stage within about 5 hours from being like 2cm. Though its 4 years ago now so I can't remember. Sometimes they do ARM part way through labour to speed it up. That happened with my 3rd. Baby was really sleepy so was hooked up to a monitor for the duration (IUGR and sleepy) and they were starting to worry that it was taking ages so they did that and she was born less than an hour later. I would recommend as a form of induction but as I'm sure you're aware there's no guarantee you won't need drip as everyone differs. Good luck though!

Thankyou both.
It's nice to hear it worked well for you @Fairy45 😊

I hope it's as successful for me!!

My last birth was induction by ARM, I was 2-3cm when MW broke my waters and within 20 minutes contractions started, waters were broken at 11.30am and DS was born not long after at 14.50pm. Was my best ever induction and labour out of all 4 of my pregnancies.

DD shot out 90 mins after I had my waters broken Grin

Wow perfect!! I'm due in today for it, so really hoping it works without the drip!!
Your stories are giving me hope!!

My friend was induced recently with ARM as she was already 2-3cm when she went in for induction. It worked for a few hours but labour was stalling so she agreed for a low dose of the drip and delivered 20mins after that.

Good luck OP!

I had ARM with my second and third baby. The first was born in under an hour and the second took two hours. Both were really positive experiences. If you can, keep moving once it’s been done, my midwife encouraged me to bounce on a birthing ball which I think helped as well.

Good luck!

Fairy45 · 03/04/2022 07:34

Good luck! Let us know Smile

Thanks for asking this, as this is how they're planning to induce me, I went naturally with my first, quite a quick labour, so they feel confident it should work for that reason. Good luck today @Mulberriestoastte :)

Mulberriestoastte · 03/04/2022 09:31

Thanks everyone - I am on my way to hospital shortly, will let you all know if it worked or not!!

I had my waters broken like this, and within seconds of her nipping them and emptying, I told her I desperately needed a poo… I didn’t, it was a contraction. It was instant, they said they would give me two hours to get to 4 contractions in 10mins but I was getting that after about 40mins! From waters breaking to birth was 5hrs. Good luck today! X

Do you have an update @Mulberriestoastte Smile

Mulberriestoastte · 08/04/2022 11:49

Just wanted to update incase anyone reads this post in the future.

Sadly NOTHING happened after my ARM 😫🙄

After like 6 or 8 hours i opted for a csection over the drip.

Baby all good and both home and safe now xx
