We had two dogs and very sadly and suddenly one passed away last year. She always knew when I was pregnant and was ever so loving. However my male dog didn’t seam to notice a thing until I brought baby home. This time since our other dogs passing I got pregnant 3 months later, I’m now 3 months along and for the last week my dog is acting up. Not eating much unless I’m eating then he wants it but won’t leave my side. Crying after me, following me, even into the bathroom when I’m vomiting my guts up, now he’s started panting a lot when around me. I thought something was wrong and was going to call the vets but my partner said is it not because he knows your pregnant; then I stopped and wondered if he could know. Does anyone else have a dog and it’s acting up because it knows your pregnant?

My dog is oblivious!

Bridgey8 · 31/03/2022 22:29

Mine just wants to cuddle my tummy!

My bitch (4yrs old Labrador) is constantly trying to sleep on me, be close to me and in general don't want to leave my sight.
If I let her she is falling asleep with her massive head on my stomach.
Been like that since a week after I did the positive pregnancy test.

Not dog but our cat definitely knew very early on. He's my wee shadow and bump snuggler.
The further I've got along the more jealous/protective he's got of me, especially with working from home. He actively blocks the laptop and gets aggressive when I zoom someone so I've ended up banishing him from the room.

Lots of pets definitely know somethings up.

My dog stopped eating for a period of time, had to try different foods and just thought she was being completely fussy. Then it went on for longer and longer, and I realised it had been around the time I found out I was pregnant that it started! A few weeks down the line, she's back to eating normally now, but I do wonder if it was related.

One of my male dogs has been acting strange. He’s become very protective. Was walking them around 2 months ago and he was barking his head off at my neighbour who was only walking to put something in his bin. Then the plumber came a few weeks later and stuck his head around the door where my dog was laying down and my dog started growling!
He’s usually an attention seeking clown like standard poodle that is daft as a brush. I think it’s definitely because I am pregnant as he’s 5 years old and he has never behaved this way before.
I would try and ignore your dogs behaviour and hope he snaps out of it. Good luck.

I have two Labradors. One (boy) seems oblivious, the other (girl) has become very protective, she has annoyingly started barking at very tall/muscular/big men we pass on walks - but only if I’m walking her on my own, and the man is walking towards me on his own - and if I gasp in pain or have a cry or anything like that she comes rushing over whining and trying to put her head in my lap. I am convinced she knows.

We don't have a dog but went to visit DPs parents when I was 37 weeks pregnant and their dog leapt into my lap and literally wrapped their legs around my bump in a cuddle, it was weird! They definitely know.

tigger2022 · 01/04/2022 07:53

I'm not sure... I don't think my dog knows I'm pregnant exactly, but she definitely knows I'm poorly. She came and sat next to me and panted when I was being sick... it made me feel way worse but was still weirdly touching Grin

GinnyBee · 01/04/2022 08:21

Is he intact? Mine acts like that when there's a bitch in season somewhere, and around here they seem to have their seasons staggered in the spring, with a couple weeks in between.

I'm 33 weeks pregnant and my dog sniffs my belly a lot, but other than that he's unaffected. He has also bonded more with my husband now, but that's likely to be more because he has had to do more with him as I've been so tired.

mol2mum · 01/04/2022 09:18

I can relate, my dog has been clingier than ever too... I take a step, he takes a step. He's always been a mummy's boy but he literally follows me everywhere now! I'm not sure whether it's because I'm pregnant or simply because I started working from home since finding out I was pregnant so he's just so used to being with me now?!

CornishSeaSwim · 01/04/2022 09:37

Yes my dog is very similar. We have always been close, as I spend the most time with her working from home. Since I've been pregnant she will only sit next to me, chooses me over my husband every time and also likes to cuddle up next to/ on me. I don't have much of a bump yet so it will be interesting to see what she makes of that. I get the feeling it is more affection than being protective as she hasn't ever growled or barked at others, just wants to be with me a lot!

CornishSeaSwim · 01/04/2022 09:38

Also I think panting is a sign of worry or being anxious, so maybe he doesn't like it when you're ill?

Nikki037297 · 02/04/2022 06:51

Thanks everyone I can see most Pets do realise something is going on! His panting has stopped now and he’s been eating again but still like my shadow

Not a dog but my cat was aggressive at the vets last year when I was pregnant. Totally out of character, as he's a Ragdoll (very laidback and calm breed, they are often called 'puppy cats' as they're quite dog-like). He was having his annual vaccination. At 7 years old he's used to it and has never kicked off when the injection goes in. I was baffled as to why he acted out this time. Wasn't until later on that another vet (different day) asked if I was in the room or if it was my partner. I said it was me and she explained it's because your pregnant!
