Hi all, what did your newborn first sleep in? We are due in July so will be hot. Thanks

I'd get a good supply of short sleeved vests and full length sleep suits.

It also depends on what you intend to cover your baby with at night. Ours absolutely refuses to keep her (well tucked-in!) blanket on and always manages to kick them off, so I make sure she's wearing layers instead.

If you're going to use sleeping bags then they won't need much layering - especially on hotter nights.

If you Google 'baby sleepwear temperature' then there are some great visual guides as to what to dress baby in at night depending on the temperature.

Good luck and congratulations! xx

Newborns can't regulate their temperature very well so you'll need short sleeved vests and sleepsuit anyway. You just probably won't need any covers for them until autumn which is fine because they can't fit sleeping bags when they are really tiny newborn anyway.

Thank you!

We had a teeny summer baby who didn’t fit sleeping bags right away. We used cellular blankets as covers and then depending on the temperature either just a long or short sleeved vest or vest and sleepsuits on the cooler nights. PP is correct about them not regulating temperature but that goes both ways and it can be very dangerous for them to get too hot so I always erred on the cool side then added an extra blanket if they felt too cool. Daytime naps were sometimes just a nappy on the baking hot days too.

Thank you! We would like to swaddle her but a little unsure if she will be too hot?! We planned to put her in just a vest, nappy obviously and a thin swaddle. We will also have a large fan in the room. Our house gets very hot as we are a terrace.

I started to swaddle in hospital (which my baby LOVED) but then my community midwife advised against it when we got home.

As they can't regulate their temp, they can quickly become too hot when swaddled. She said if I insisted on still swaddling, then make sure their arms are free as they can keep cooler.

As a PP said, overheating is really dangerous, so I too go on the cooler side.

A baby will cry and tell you if they're too cold but they can't if they're too hot.

I should add, I've had heaps of differing advice on swaddling, so don't take the above as gospel!

GirlMum93 · 31/03/2022 18:44

Thank you so much @FebBabyNo1 I don't even want to run the risk especially in summer. We have some nice swaddle-type bags which her arms can be free. Also some thin sleeping bags.

It's difficult to judge as you will know best how hot it gets but I would say a vest and a single layer of a cellular blanket (the one with holes in). They might kick it off, which is fine, but mine wouldnt have slept bare legged if that makes sense. In which case I would go for a footless sleepsuit - some have vest/strap tops as opposed to long sleeve. Sleeping bag with just a nappy and short sleeve vest could work but depends on size of the baby. You might have to see what works for your little one, they're fussy little things and you can bet what you think is destined for success won't work 😂

A vest and sleepsuit with a thing cellular blanket was what we used for our July baby. She was 5lb so too small for sleeping bags.
