Is this common? I have a history of anxiety and depression but had been doing well recently and thought i was in a good place. However since falling pregnant, I feel like my stress and anxiety has sky rocketed. It's a vicious cycle because I know it's not good for the baby and get even more stressed out :( will it get better or will it last the entire pregnancy?

Yes, or suffice to say it was for me. Really struggled with depression in pregnancy in spite of not having encountered it in the rest of my life. I worried it made me higher risk for PND but the fog lifts almost immediately post birth and never returned!

Avonacha · 30/03/2022 13:47

Thanks @Frenchie8690 that gives me hope! I'm only 8 weeks so feel like there's ages to go.

I'm struggling too since getting pregnant. 11 weeks and really low & tearful all of the time, with high anxiety. @Frenchie8690 did you get any help from the perinatal mental health team? I've reached out to them and am nervous about what to expect

Frenchie8690 · 04/04/2022 16:10

No. Zero support, it was hopeless. Nobody seemed to care

Cas112 · 04/04/2022 16:18

I was really struggling from about 6 weeks to 16 weeks, it has seemed to get better past couple of weeks so I hope same happens for you OP

Avonacha · 04/04/2022 19:38

So sorry to hear that @Frenchie8690 :( My local services were pretty rubbish when I had postnatal depression last year too. They said I didn't warrant one-to-one talking therapy sessions but also feared that I'd make other participants feel worse if I attended the group sessions. I gave up in the end.

@Cas112 I'm glad you're doing better. Onwards and upwards I hope :) I've realised getting out for a walk really helps- it's just so difficult to do with a toddler who currently thinks I am her #1 enemy and will not cooperate to get ready and get out!

@viburnum Hope you start to feel better soon and I hope your local services do better than mine and @frenchie's!

Yes. I have anxiety too, I'm 8w and been anxious all the way through. Was slightly reassured by 7w scan but seeing so many people lose babies between scans has brought the anxiety right back. On top of that been sad and teary since the weekend as well.

Anonmum1921 · 04/04/2022 19:48

Sorry to hear you are feeling low. I also felt low during my pregnancy. I got in touch with my local perinatal mental health team when I was 18 weeks pregnant. Thankfully soon after this I started to feel brighter so I did not pursue anything.

After I had DS however, I took a bad turn and ended up feeling extremely low and once again reached out to the team. They were absolutely amazing and I'm really glad that I got the ball rolling earlier on in my pregnancy as I was able to jump back in quickly and I was already on their radar.

I think it couldn't hurt to maybe reach out for some support, even if it's just in case. It really helped me and the support is there if you need!

I hope you start to feel better soon! Look after yourself Thanks

Avonacha · 04/04/2022 19:53

@CSR721 I hope you feel better soon. Have you mentioned this to your midwife/GP? It's really tough Flowers hang on in there

@Anonmum1921 I'm glad you got the help you needed and are doing better now :)

I did with my first, heart racing anxiety all the time.it was exhausting...Mind are somewhere that have helped me a lot when NHS services aren't as asccessible. Might be worth looking at what your local minds offer.

nee22 · 04/04/2022 20:04

I know some pp have had bad experience but I do think Perinatal mental health is worth a try, I found them excellent. They're specially trained for exactly this and I found them way better than any nhs mental health support I'd had before. I received one to one sessions during pregnancy and was offered post partum but didn't require it. Your midwife or gp can refer you.

viburnum · 04/04/2022 21:38

@nee22 I'm glad they helped you! @Frenchie8690 @Avonacha I'm sorry you had bad experiences - like you said, really hope my local services are able to help. I don't know what they'll offer but hopefully better than nothing.

CSR721 · 05/04/2022 09:40

@Avonacha no, my gp has been less than useless and midwife has been impossible to get through. I have my booking in appointment on Friday so will definitely mention it then. I hope you're feeling better soon too xx

Avonacha · 06/04/2022 17:52

@CSR721 good luck, hope you're booking appointment goes well!
I rang my midwife team today to let them know what's happening, they're going to make a referral for me but I've no idea how long that will take. I'm considering just biting the bullet and asking my GP for medication as it's something I've not tried before. I'm just worried about side effects and weaning off :( I'm just so sick of feeling like this and it's only getting worse. Doesn't help that my DD is going through the terrible 2s either!

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I'm Pg too, and have anxiety.

First trimester is dreadful, I had times of feeling v low and all the usual black thoughts. It's my second pregnancy so I knew it's hormones plus massive strain on your body.

I'm now in second trimester and surfing on the feel good hormones which have kicked in, redecorating and tidying up the house.

I honestly think the first trimester is all about survival so do anything that makes you feel good. For me, it was gardening and TOTP repeats.

Avonacha · 06/04/2022 18:33

@Musomama1 I'm glad to hear you're doing better now! I really hope it's the same for me. I do remember my last pregnancy and getting that nesting phase motivation...so hopefully it gets better this time around too. It's so hard to see the end of it when you're in the thick of it all! Counting down the weeks until the cloud lifts

@nee22 thanks for sharing this. My midwife has just referred me. I've never had any mental health problems before but I've been ill solidly since being pregnant which in itself has been really tough. It was also a shock pregnancy as we didn't think after years of trying we could have kids so it's a lot of process!

I'm nervous about being recorded as having 'mental health problems' but at the same time a bit more support can't help. My anxiety / worries are definitely having an impact and I would love to feel a bit more myself. Pregnancy is definitely not how I imagined!
