POLYHYDRAMNIOS WORRIES

Hi,

So I'm 38+2 and have and section booked in a few days time (Elective RCS).

I have Polyhydramnios, my most recent levels being 34.3 as of today. At my last appointment a few days ago they were 30.9, so steadily increasing. I am absolutely huge and so so uncomfortable, I'm not sleeping through stress and worry, praying our baby will be healthy. Baby is head down and measuring around 7lb 2oz. The Doctor didn't seem overly concerned and just said to wait until my next appointment in a couple of days to measure my levels again as they won't bring her before 39 weeks unless my water levels are touching 40, surely this is far too high??

Anyone had any experiences with excessive amniotic fluid levels? Positive or worst case scenario. I feel like I cannot get through the next week!

Thanks for reading.

Your waters will definitely pop by then. No way will you hang on. Be prepared and it's lush when they go!

I had this with my little girl, who's now just over two. I was huge, can't remember the levels but was off the charts by 37 weeks. Because there was so much fluid I stopped feeling movements around 36 weeks, and ended up in the hospital every day to check. They weren't overly concerned about the excess fluid, but once my blood pressure started to go up too they recommended getting things started.

They broke my waters manually, which I'm glad of as it was truly biblical, and every time I moved there seemed to be more. But baby was never at risk, her heart was beating steadily throughout.

If you're worried about movements definitely go in and get them checked however many times you need to. Good luck, it's never nice having a curve ball in late pregnancy

I had this with my last two pregnancies! Over 20 years ago so I wasn’t actually given specific measurements! They were both transverse and my oldest was literally moving position every hour!! I had them both ELCS at 37 weeks…both had respiratory distress but were both ok 24 hrs later . Good luck, your baby will be fine..any signs of water breaking..call 999 and go on all fours and stick your bum in the air .X

Hi,

Thank you for the replies! I feel a little better knowing other experiences.

I'm just struggling so much, I have no signs of my water breaking, not that I'm aware of anyway as I was induced with my son 5 years ago so I've not experienced anything spontaneous like that! I have an appointment to check levels again tomorrow, if they have increased again (which seems likely considering how quickly they're shooting up) I'm going to pray they just do my c section!

I'm just in pain constantly with how huge/tight my bump is, I can't even bend over to empty the washing machine!

My main worry is she comes out and we have some health issues, a blockage in her throat or something that's caused it (maybe I've googled too much I don't know!)

X

Please don't worry about the baby, they would have picked something up by now.

I had polyhydramnios with my last pregnancy. I was so incredibly uncomfortable towards the end of the pregnancy - I was massive! I had an extra scan towards the end because of the amount of fluid and they were slightly concerned the baby might have an issue with his oesophagus or bowel (apparently a possible reason for the extra fluid) so advised baby should have an NG tube and x-ray before his first feed.

C-section went fine but I distinctly heard 2 different people say 'wow' when the broke my waters. My husband said it was epic and they had to put lots of padding on the floor to save the surgeon's trainers! 😂

Baby was fine and stayed with us until I was back in recovery then my husband went with him for the tube and x-ray which showed everything was absolutely fine.

I'm now listening to my gorgeous 6 month old boy squawking away 😍 He's totally healthy, happy and well.

I still remember how it felt not to be pregnant anymore and despite recovering from the c-section the immense relief I felt not to be lugging round my enormous, heavy belly.

Good luck with everything.

Hi OP! I had this as well, I was HUGE. By the end of it I couldn't move anymore at all, basically. My husband had to roll me in bed 😑 I had a c section at exactly 39 weeks. Not only I had massive amounts of water but also a 9 lbs baby 😂😂 everything was perfectly fine. During pregnancy I had a few more checks and scans but nothing worrying. You are both going to be fine!! Good luck ❤❤❤❤❤

UPDATE

Been scanned today and it's now measuring at 43! Waiting to see what the outcome will be with the doctor!

Thank you for all your replies xx

I had polyhydraminos with my now 8 year old. I ended up with an emergency c section because the cord was wrapped around his neck but we didn’t know that until I was in labour. I think they said at the time that might have been the reason for all the extra fluid but he was also a huge baby (the weight of my other two combined!) All was well in the end, good luck to you x

MrsMarrioo · 29/03/2022 12:19

Thank you. The cord didn't seem to be wrapped round her neck during the scan but it's definitely a worry! X

@MrsMarrioo good to hear that everything is looking good with baby and there is nothing of concern, I just came across your post in the hopes I'd get some answers too.

I'm 32 weeks and had a growth scan yesterday as I have GD, they said I have polyhydraminos as my fluids are higher than usual, I am in metformin for my GD and from what I thought they were controlled well.

I have to wait to be called in for another scan to check that the babies kidneys etc are ok and I had a blood test to rule out anything else. I have been worried sick since yesterday but the doctor did say it's most likely due to the fact u have GD and the outcome could be to deliver the baby earlier than normal.

It's nice to hear positive stories on here, hoping you and the baby are doing well and fingers crossed for me Confused
