keeping baby warm

Me and my DH hate being too warm at night and I am constantly worrying about how we are going to cope having to have the heating cranked up when our LO arrives. Anyone else hate being hot, and what did you do to overcome the problem?

You don't have to crank up the heating when you have a baby in the house. In fact you must be careful not to let the baby overheat.

Have a look on the grobag website and you'll find a table where you can look at the temp of your room and see how to dress your baby and which tog grobag to use so the baby is about right.

If your house is really freezing you can always put LO in a vest, babygro, cardigan and blanket. Or swaddle.

We didnt alter the heating at all with our babies. 18 degrees is about right for babies to sleep in which is actually quite cool.

I think the advise is its better to add a blanket to them if they're cold (or remove one if they're getting hot) rather than have the room hot iself IYSWIM.

Yuo can buy cheap baby room thermometers...or even some baby monitors have them built in if that helps.

babies room temp should be 18 degrees. definatelgy not hot and definately do not have heating on all night. Think a factor in cot death (among other factors) is overheating of baby. when is baby due? if still winter, a sleeping bag, plus sleep suit plus body will be enough for baby. Can put on extra light blanket if very cold night. People wrap little babies up too much imo.

Baby due in a oouple of weeks. I know its bad for them to get too hot, but I dont want him too cold either. I will check out the website mentioned. Thanks.

As someone who really feels the cold ( I don't like the house to be below 21'C, I would sugest putting a hat on your new born if you're really worried. You will find the maternity ward unberably hot - even I did!

i am pretty sure that it is not recommended to ever have a hat on anewborn unless outdoors. They have little bodies and cannot regulate their body temps like us (by sweating etc). You should never put your baby to sleep indoors with a hat on.

I was also told not to put a hat on a newborn when they are sleeping (despite dd having one put on her in hospital in the unbelievably hot ward ).
I am a bit fanatical about the temp in dd's room and what she is wearing - !! Anything between 16-20degrees is fine with 18 being the best. The grobag website is great for explaining what they should wear in what temps and in what tog etc.

LynetteScavo · 06/01/2008 22:24

I put a hat on all my babies when the heating was off, because they can't regulate their body temp. As they don't have any hair, they lose a lot of heat though their heads.

Nappy - vest - baby grow - swaddle blanket - hat (newborn type) - heating between 18'C -21'C.

I would always swaddle a newborn rather than use a grow bag.

I think that's why they say not to put a hat on a newborn - if they get too hot (which is a SIDS risk) then they have no way of cooling down if they have a hat on. Agree with the swaddle for a newborn - only way we could get dd to sleep!
