I have one - I bought it second hand on ebay for £30. TBH those are not the best type - you want a wand type. Also bear in mind you need conductive gel too - boots do it for tens machines. That's what I use.

They are enormously reassuring though.

Have had a really worrying time and found the doppler fantastic and very reassuring. Get the one that needs gel, not the one from argos or mothercare as that one didn't work. We bought angelsounds on ebay brand new its fab.

I used a wand one, they are a bit more expensive but much better imho.
Depends how you feel about them. I used it for reassurance if I had not felt dd move for a while and when I could first hear heartbeat, did it for my mum and sister.
If you are likely to be obsessive and have it on 24/7 then no - but you know best!

KY jelly or cheap hair gel work just as well as the expensive gel btw

Kezza I'm started using mine successfully at 10 weeks (mind you it is my second pregnancy) but most will get a beat at 12 weeks if not before, but you do have to start really low down (think in the pubic hair department).

Ooh if you are really quick THIS ONE IS CHEAP!

Minkus · 07/01/2008 21:03

Vaseline intensive care aloe vera moisturiser (the green one) does the trick too

Another MNer has suggested dopplerhire.co.uk

I bought the doppler i mentioned above and i waited a week or so before giving it go..... expecting to hear nothing at this stage 9.3 i gave it a whirl anyway.
First i listened to my own heart - how loud???? then tried the babies.... i could definately hear a heartbeat it was like a woosh woosh then through that came a gogomp gogomp, it was fairly faint and i could only hear it in one specific area very low down to the left of my belly button. My midwife said it was unlikely that it was the babies at this stage and that it might have been my own heartbeat??? however it was only detectable in that one place... anyone had similar experiences, do u think it was mine or babies? i wouldnt be suprised if it was my heart but seems funny i could only hear it in that place???xxx

I couldn't hear my babies heartbeats until 12 weeks with my doppler - and you will hear your own more in one spot than others (I know the spot you mean). You can normally tell who's heartbeat you're hearing by comparing it with your own pulse too.

Wait a few weeks and try again - the doppler was a fabulous way for us to bond with our babies really early in pregnancy!
