Slapped cheek 17 weeks pregnant

Looks like my DS1 has slapped cheek syndrome: he's had a cold and cough all week and now a rash on both cheeks. I'm feeling fine but I'm 17 weeks pregnant and freaking out reading about the risks to the baby! Luckily I have a midwife app on Monday so I can let her know so.. but If anyone has any experience of this I would really appreciate it. Thanks so much

Hi there. I had a suspicion of slapped cheek, they took it seriously. My GP and my maternity unit were both brilliant. GP took bloods to check for active infection; maternity unit checked my booking bloods for antibodies. Turned out I had been previously exposed and had antibodies but no active infection.

I would get advice asap, maybe call your maternity helpline; and if you can get a bit of help with the DC, lots of handwashing and good hygiene etc to minimise chances of catching it that would probably be good.

You may well have had it before like me. Hope you are ok.

I had positive test for parvovirus at about 12wks pregnancy. I had fortnightly checks and all was OK but if there had been a problem they planned to do a blood transfusion at 18wks plus, the main worry was the babies showing issues before 18 wks then there was nothing they could do (as I understand it). You’re unlikely to have caught it as most people have antibodies but if you have caught it then the pregnancy is further along and they can intervene if the virus does cause issues (it most probably won’t). Hope that’s helpful

My son had slapped cheek when I was 32 weeks pregnant back in 2019. I was sent to my maternity unit, blood’s taken and monitoring. My test showed previous infection but no active infection. Home after 24 hrs of monitoring. My Gp called the midwife whilst I was in the surgery with dc, and they took it very seriously had me come straight over to the unit. I would contact a midwife earlier and air on the side of caution.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences! I listened to you advice to act a bit earlier just in case, and the midwives are already checking my booking bloods for immunity. I should know by Wednesday, and already feel better about it. Fingers crossed all ok. Also great to know that even if I eventually test positive it's could be all fine. Thanks again.

Same recently happened to me and yes like others said they took my blood to check, I was 10 weeks. If it helps I was told by the midwife that most adults are immune x
