Spotting at 5 weeks

I'm 5+1 weeks pregnant and started spotting last night. Mostly just pink blood when I wipe. I think it's got a tiny bit heavier this morning, red blood when I wipe but nothing on a pad yet.

I have some twinges and mild cramps but no real pain.

What can I do except wait it out to see if it gets worse? I have a feeling it will, I'm not sure that I feel pregnant any more, my symptoms have mostly gone. If it gets worse should I call epu/midwife or is it too early in pregnancy for that?

Hi @kentiapalm I am in a similar boat, 6 weeks +6 and had some spotting yesterday morning.

I have read that any bleeding no matter how little you should tell your midwife/GP about, so I phoned GP (I haven't got a midwife yet) and she said they automatically refer any bleeding to the early pregnancy unit, and someone would call me to give me an appointment in the next couple of days. Nobody has phoned yet so I have booked a private scan for tonight to put my mind at rest as I feel absolutely sick with nerves.

I would recommend giving your GP a ring just to let them know what's happening and they can let you know what to do. Best of luck x

Hi @kentiapalm
I spotted in my last pregnancy at 5 weeks 1 day too and had mild cramps. I was so scared at the time and called my GP who referred to me to the EPU for a scan. I did have to wait until 5 weeks 6 days for my scan but everything was fine and baby was measuring correctly.
Unfortunately my pregnancy did end in a miscarriage but that was much later down the line at 11 weeks and I don't think this bleeding had anything to do with it.
I have since read that spotting is very common in early pregnancy but you should always contact your GP for any bleeding.
Hope all turns out well for you xx

Thanks. I called my epu and they won't do anything until the bleeding either gets very heavy, or lasts more than 7 days. So I have to just wait it out.

@Chattie89 I hope your scan this evening goes OK.

@Nellie1027 thank you that's a little reassuring. I'm really sorry about your miscarriage.

@kentiapalm Hope it stops for you soon, and then maybe you could book a private scan if that's possible for you?
I read lots about people who had on and off bleeding for their whole pregnancy and some who had really heavy bleeding and it was all ok.
Everyone is different and I think we are lead to believe that pregnancy is this exciting amazing thing, which is some respects it certainly is, but no one tells you about the anxiety and uncertainty as well!
And thank you, I'm pregnant again now 2 months later so trying to just enjoy it a bit more this time but anxiety is certainly there!
Look after yourself x

@Nellie1027 thank you. The bleeding has stopped but so have my pregnancy symptoms and I'm only getting faint lines on pregnancy tests now so it seems inevitable. Just waiting for the bleeding to start again.

Yeah the anxiety is awful. I was anxious the whole first trimester with my DD and everything was fine, there's just so much uncertainty with it all!

I hope your pregnancy is going well this time and you can enjoy it.
