Dentist While Pregnant 23 Weeks

Hello all, just looking for other expectant mums experiences with dental practices while pregnant! I am currently 23 weeks

I am currently in agonising pain, both wisdom tooth are impacted and trying to find their way out.

Dentist will only give me antibiotics and send me on my way again, I'm on my 2nd lot in the space of 2 weeks as apparently while I'm pregnant there is nothing they can do.

I was even made to have a filling done without ANY pain relief whatsoever.

I am currently having to survive taking co-codamol (8mg/500mg) as that's the highest dose the doctors would let me take.

I am waking up in the night, screaming and crying in absolute agony and just feels like there is absolutely no help for this situation, I don't want to be taking codeine related medication for much longer as I know the risks associated with these.

Just wondering if anyone else expecting actually managed to get some sort of treatment during pregnancy?

I had a wisdom (top) tooth removed with pain relief at about 16 weeks, that was only 2 years ago so can't imagine things have changed that much! And yes, I made absolutely sure they knew I was pregnant!

Teeth can absolutely be removed whilst pregnant if they are following the nice guidelines you would meet the criteria after 2 infections, but they would need to take an X-ray to find out where they are located as there are a few nerves around that area.
As long as you are happy having the X-ray done, they will be able to take them out. The X-ray doses are very small but no dentist will take out a wisdom tooth without knowing how to approach it safely.

If they are impacted it’s usually a referral to an oral surgeon unless your dentist has experience in removing impacted wisdom teeth.

Local anaesthetic is also fine when pregnant. Contact your local dental hospital or 111 if your dentist is refusing. It’s frustrating how women need to suffer unnecessarily when pregnant as dental care in pregnancy isn’t often well researched or taught.

I had two wisdom teeth removed at roughly 8 months pregnant. I had two separate appointments and pain relief on both occasions. This was 4 years ago, I remember being concerned, I think I got an apron for x-rays. I would follow guidance from pp, you don't want to risk further infection.

You'd have to be submitted to a damn lot of xray rays for it to be harmful. If your I'm that much pain insist they act

DottieDam · 23/03/2022 08:43

They can remove teeth without doing an x-ray although the x-ray risks are super small anyway for dental scans.

I had a tooth out a few weeks ago and a filling while pregnant. All with pain relief. Sounds like you need a different dentist.

Just to add, I had an xray last year (before I was pregnant) which showed the extent of how impacted both my wisdom teeth are which they are using as a current guide.

Personally I don't mind having an xray done, it's probably very minimal risks compared to the co-codamol and stress that I am currently in for bump. She's happy kicking away at me though 😂

Have just rang dentist and they said they won't refer me to hospital until I have been in on 3 separate occasions with issues relating to the wisdom teeth and that the wait time is so long regardless bump will probably be born by the time I get seen.

It's just frustrating at this point, been trying to keep my pregnancy as stress free as possible due to having mental health issues in the past and psychosis from my first pregnancy but it feels like a loosing battle atm.

That is so annoying, I have my wisdom teeth out but before I was pregnant. I have had a filling while 20 weeks pregnant (2 weeks ago) he gave me anastatic. Can you change dentist, yours doesn't sound great.

With regards the x-ray, I broke a bone when pregnant before. They just put a heavy bib on you.

Bethrose9716 · 23/03/2022 11:21

I can't change dentist around here as I was very lucky to get in this one as none are taking nhs patients currently 😓

I had a wisdom tooth out when about 24 weeks pregnant, several years ago. It’s terrible they’re treating you like this. If by any chance you’re in London I heartily recommend the emergency dental service at Kings (Denmark Hill) who were perfectly happy to see me. Failing that, can you try 111 and see if you can get a referral to a dental hospital in your area since your own dentist is so unhelpful? Really hope you get sorted soon - dental pain is awful.

Coco9910 · 23/03/2022 17:51

I was due to have 2 teeth out last month when I was about 16 weeks pregnant and the only reason they didn’t do it was because I was stressed (hate stuff like this) and it wasn’t causing me any pain so they said they would wait. They definitely can remove them!

Avonacha · 23/03/2022 18:17

Could you afford to pay for a private oral surgeon? It's probably the quickest way to get your wisdom teeth out

annlee3817 · 23/03/2022 19:45

Can you ask to see a different dentist at the same surgery? I had a filling yesterday and injections to numb the area, I'm 17 weeks
