Anyone who washed hands excessively had a healthy baby? Worried about chemicals in antibac

I am wondering if anyone who perhaps has ocd or works in the medical field has washed their hands excessively during pregnancy, particular first trimester and baby wasn't affected? I am concerned regarding the chemicals, mainly Tricoslan and sulphates in anti bac soap. I wash around 30 times a day due to ocd.

I'm not in the medical field but I did used to be a dermal absorption scientist and I can tell you in this scenario there is nothing to worry about.

  1. You are rinsing most of the product from your skin when you are washing them.
  2. The potential transfer to babies skin would be very small if any. Most of the time you will be touching your baby through their clothes.
  3. Exposure to chemicals is based on prolonged exposure (eg, leaving on for 6 hours before washing off).
  4. The skin has a top layer called the statum corneum that is shed regularly. Chemicals can penetrate this layer but many do not make it past this.

I hope this puts your mind at ease a bit but I also hope that you are getting some professional help?

Thank you it helps. I am mostly concerned about the chemicals getting into my system to the fetus and causing birth defects..

Ah yes, I see that in your post now. Have you spoken to your midwife?

im too early to have a midwife yet. I just want to know it hasn't got to the baby

I work on nicu and we are constantly washing and gelling our hands. Many of us have had babies with no issues. Im currently 10 weeks and its not even crossed my mind that it would be an issue. The only things on my risk assessment for work are xrays and moving heavy incubators.

I don't think its something you need to worry about.

OP this is your third thread asking this exact question within 3 hours. One thread is surely enough!

I was super OCD during my pregnancy and washed my hands excessively throughout to the point they were red raw. Was a germaphobe before COVID abs then that didn't help and was very anxious during the pregnancy due to a lung problem he has (that is proved to be not at all related to anything the mum does and happens in the first 6 weeks) and he has come out fine, even his lung isn't causing problems! Don't worry at all about that, I know it's super hard to try and not go too far with these things in pregnancy because "why risk it?" But soap there is nothing to worry about, at all :) you're doing great!

As long as you arent drinking the sanitiser then I dont see how it could possible affect your unborn baby

kentiapalm · 22/03/2022 15:41

I'm sure it's fine but if you're worried then why not use soap that doesn't have those chemicals in it?
