Early Scans - How early were you able to see anything?

I have a scan booked for 6 weeks to alleviate anxiety about the pregnancy, but I’ve heard conflicting stories about whether it’s possible to see anything that early (which may only increase anxiety!) … did you have early scans, were you able to see anything, if not how early were you able to see anything?

I had a private reassurance scan at 7 weeks, they wouldn't do earlier than that.

Could see it was identical twins, they couldn't pick up at that stage if they were in the same sac or if there was a membrane. I got referred to the FMU before my due date to check that out.

Had a private scan at 6 weeks 3 days - could see gestational sac, yolk sac, foetal pole and the flickering heartbeat. I also had read conflicting things but following fertility treatment and a miscarriage, we really wanted the reassurance and luckily it was a positive experience.

With one of my babies I seen them at 5+3 he was just 2mm long with a heart beat. They last scanning said that’s the earliest she’s ever seen a heart beat. This time I was 6 weeks and they couldn’t even see a baby just a gestational sac and yolk sac I had to go back 2 weeks later

I had a scan at 6 weeks and they could see the heartbeat.

I had a scan at 6 weeks, saw tiny sac and that's it. Nothing inside and we couldn't even see twin 2s sac. Had a scan at 9 weeks and there were two little babies. Always worth waiting a bit longer I think

IVFdreams2021 · 21/03/2022 11:43

5 weeks 6 days and we saw a heartbeat.

This is my first pregnancy so no scan yet (5+1 today). I have my first midwife appointment in 3 weeks. If they are happy for me to wait for my first NHS scan at 12 weeks then I'll be booking privately to have a scan in week 8 if I can just to get some reassurance like you. I think as hard as it is, unless you have a medical reason to have a really early scan it's probably best to wait a little longer if you can. Most places say not before 6 weeks, but I think it may increase your anxiety if you don't see the result you hope to see. I just try and remind myself how quickly the past couple of weeks has gone without me thinking about it and the next few weeks will come and go before I know it.

5+6 and saw a Hb with both pregnancies - DS2s was slower than DS1s and OBGYN said it had probably only just started beating earlier that morning.

If you ovulate later in the month then you may only see a sac and fetal pole but no hb.

PiccoloMaud · 21/03/2022 12:28

We went at 7 weeks exactly and saw heartbeat. Didn't want to go before that in case it was too early to see anything and caused us more worry!

CherylPorter350 · 21/03/2022 14:11

I had a scan at 6+5 and we could see a tiny flicker of a heartbeat

Yogagirl18 · 21/03/2022 15:51

I went at 5+6 and couldn’t really see anything. Went at 6+6 and saw the heartbeat clearly.

Holskey · 21/03/2022 16:25

I had an IVF clinic scan at 6+4 and saw a heartbeat.

Many do see a heartbeat at 6 weeks, but not everyone. How certain are you of when you ovulated? Even then you can't know when baby implanted.

I'd put it back a few days if possible to avoid unnecessary worry. And definitely a transvaginal scan.

AnIconOfImperfections · 21/03/2022 21:14

Went at 6+2, saw a heartbeat which the Sonographer said was strong, which was reassuring. She saw the sac, the fetal pole, etc.

It was a positive experience. Ours is an IVF baby and the measurements were spot on from the implantation date which was also very reassuring.

Africa2go · 21/03/2022 21:19

5+5 (due to early bleed), sacs visible, no heartbeats. Had to go back 2 weeks later so 7+5 and saw 2 heartbeats. Those 2 weeks were hard. I would therefore book about 7 weeks. If you go earlier and can't see a heartbeat, you'll be beside yourself.

Shroedy · 21/03/2022 21:58

Almost killed me to wait until 7 weeks but didn't want it to be too early, even for an IVF pregnancy where we were 100% on dates. 7+1 we could see the heartbeat. I wouldn't go earlier than that, not because you won't see anything but because you might not. That's just anxiety inducing and expensive.

madeleine85 · 22/03/2022 03:06

I had one at 5+3 with my DD and one at 6+4 with my current pregnancy. The 5+3 you could see a yolk sac, and nothing else. I wasn't disappointed though, it was an unexpected pregnancy, so good to confirm what was there. With the 6+4 there was a heartbeat and you could see a squiggly yolk sac, which when I took it home and screenshotted it, when zoomed it I could see the outline of a tiny tiny baby. Looked like a gummy bear!

SockQueen · 22/03/2022 08:19

With DS1 I was under the fertility clinic (clomid) and had one at 5+4 and could see a yolk sac and tiny fetal pole - like the size of a grain of rice, but no HB. Went back at 7+2 and there was a blob the size of a big bean, with an obvious heartbeat.

DS2 was conceived spontaneously so no automatic early scans, we had a private one just before 8 weeks and again saw a bean with a HB

ALBXO · 22/03/2022 09:28

I had a scan at 5+5 and it was just the yoc sack. I went back at 7+3 and saw a fetal pole and heartbeat. I would also suggest waiting an additional week, it’s so hard but so worth it for the additional reassurance. It’s very unusual to see everything at 6 weeks.
