Contraception at 50

I'm with a boyfriend and we're having sex obviously. But a friend of a friend has just found she's pregnant at 49 - she's almost 50.

I haven't been using contraception as no periods for about 6 months.

Should I use something? Didn't think to ask doctor.

Yes you definitely do. If your periods stop at under age 50 you need contraception for two years after your last period.

If they stop at over age 50, you need contraception for one year after your last period.

That's the official NHS guidelines. I'd get sorted if I were you, just on case!

Nhs says:

Menopause (when your periods stop permanently and you're no longer fertile)is usually diagnosed:

  • if you're over50 and have not had a period for more than 12 months
  • if you're under 50 andhave not had aperiod for more than 2 years

Right, definitely on it then.

I'm pretty sure time without periods is getting longer but I really don't want a baby now!

No idea what my friend will do, she's a friend of a friend and apparently very shocked (with two DC in their early 20s).
