Elective c section or no?

I'm not in my third trimester. Thinking about birthing options. No idea what to do. My midwife hasn't yet mentioned anything to do with a birthing plan or options.

I was thinking of a pool birth with had and air but now thinking about a section?

Anyone opted to have a section? Just feel like I'm panicking about birth now and I had to be induced last time and ended up in hospital for a week with a blood transfusion, iron tablets etc

Just not sure if a section would be more predictable and quicker?

I have no idea what to do

Im in the same boat. I had to be induced with my others and had horrible births. Now due in may and I keep toying between natural and a section. The natural will be so much quicker recovery wise but I am terrified of things going wrong. A section seems safer?? Hopefully there's ladies who can help us decide. X

MN seems to be skewed in favour of ELCS, but I struggled with mine, it left me traumatised. My second birth was a 18 hour back-to-back VBAC with episiotomy and an epidural that didn't work, on paper it should have been traumatic yet I felt so much better afterwards physically and mentally. The pain felt 'right' after my VBAC, where I felt violated and broken for a year after my CS. So I guess there's no perfect answer.

I had an ELCS and found it an absolutely wonderful experience. Very calm, easy recovery, and no long term damage at all (unlike many of my friends who had vaginal births). I had to be quite insistent in asking for one though, since I didn't have a 'reason' (my reason was that I wanted one!).

Thanks for the reply's ladies. I have an appointment with my midwife on Wednesday. It's for my gestational diabetes test because my gran has diabetes but I'll mention my concerns about labour and the possibility of a c section.

When I had my first it was a vaginal birth and I tore and they did mention something about maybe not being able to have another vaginal birth due to the scar tissue but nothing has been mentioned so far about giving birth so I will ask her

I’m 35 weeks pregnant and I’ve got an elective C-section booked. First baby. The thought of a vaginal birth is utterly revolting to me so I said from my first booking appointment that I wanted a C-section. All of the midwives and consultants have been very supportive of my decision and have agreed that it’s my body and my baby so my choice. If you want a section then just ask for one. They can’t say no to you.

@Harlequin1088 thanks for your reply. Are you booked in form 39 weeks?

Yes because it’s elective they said the earliest they’d book me in was 39 weeks. They didn’t have any slots on my 39 week day (falls on a Friday) so the they’ve got me booked in for the following Monday when I’ll be 39+3.

I had an ELCS July 2020 - after first birth induction/ 2 days later/ forceps/ blood transfusion. I was booked in at 39+1 and the hospital are quite strict on having a separate EMCS and ELCS surgical team as far as they can so no-one get bumped beyond later in the day. The recovery was better than the first - I knew what to expect and apart from the first poo and frustration I couldn't drive absolutely fine. I'd recommend 100% over the stress and anxiety of my first. I left hospital within 24 hours with no stronger painkiller than paracetamol (covid lockdown so they wanted you out so no decent painkillers) but I didn't miss them. I don't love the scar or slight apron...

baby2due · 14/03/2022 22:12

@Hosum - oh that's so similar to my birth experience the first time. I had to be induced, took 2 days before I actually went into labour, got an epidural, had to get a episiotomy, needed a blood transfusion Hmm

The thought of going through all that again is just torture. If someone could tell me that I'd go naturally and be able to have a water birth and labour would only last X amount of hours then I'd be fine, but unfortunately none of us know what's going to happen so I think because it's so unpredictable it's giving me the fear!

After a traumatic first birth and tearing/scarring I would strongly recommend an ELCS. I went vaginal again for second birth and though it was much easier than the first I tore again and ended up with a second round of reconstructive surgery. All very difficult. Number three was an ELCS and absolute bliss. Recovery a lot easier than recovering from a serious tear!

SunnySideUp2020 · 15/03/2022 08:55

In your case OP I'd probably go for elcs...
Never had one though so can't comment on what easier. But given the unpredictability around vaginal birth and if I had traumatic experience before, I Dont think I'd risk it again.

But that is a very personal decision I think!
