Early pregnancy scan - private vs NHS, dates different

Hi!
So I went for a private reassurance scan with WTTW 5 days ago and everything was fine, heartbeat and measuring 7w1d. Started bleeding 2 days later and today had a scan at my EPU, which showed a heartbeat and healthy pregnancy but dated at 7 weeks, less than one I had 5 days ago! Does this mean I’m miscarrying? NHS refused to look at private scan notes and said they only work on what they see in front of them. I was also prescribed progesterone, is that for a threatened miscarriage? The sonographer was very abrupt and I feel ushered out without answers. Nurse on EPU tried to reassure me about dates being off as measurements are so small but to me it’s gone backwards! I also tracked my ovulation so I should be 7 weeks 5 days.

Not to worry, few millimeters can be a week difference. Also its how the baby is positioned when they take CRL. If your concerned do another in private scan 2 weeks times

Also different scanners have variance in measurement. Nhs use outdated scanners, not as detailed

Thanks so much for the reassurance @Helpdesk3
This is all super new as I’ve had two miscarriages and never had good news at a scan at this stage!

Hey can I please ask you are doing now ? I'm in the same boat atm :-(

Bettybird · 17/03/2022 20:27

Hi @Worriedandconfused23 so sorry to hear you’re also in this terrible limbo! What happened with you? I’m going for another scan in 10 days but the Progesterone I was prescribed stopped my bleeding. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or it’s just masking a miscarriage 😫

I had a private scan at 8 weeks which dated me a few days behind where I thought I was based off when I was sure I ovulated however at my 12 week NHS scan I was measuring exactly as I thought I should have been. When they're that small it can be easy to miscalculate a measurement .Fingers crossed for you x

Worriedandconfused23 · 18/03/2022 09:04

I've been told the bleeding was just my cervix and its stopped now but I'm similar to you in dates and it's really thrown me :-( such a long time to wait isn't it ! I'll cross my fingers for us both xx

Please don't stress. The measurements at this stage are so inaccurate. Mine went all over the place. They'll set it firmly at your 12 week scan but before that it can move all over the place

An early private scan I had put me 10 days behind what the NHS dating scan eventually put me at. 2 weeks away from due date now. They are so small at that age the measurements can vary a lot. Good luck OP.

Thanks everyone the positive words are really helpful. I guess my main concern is that the measurements didn’t change in 5 days (even though it was two different machines, sonographers etc) I can’t shake that they couldn’t have measured THAT differently. Basically the private early reassurance scan has ruined me as if I’d just done the NHS one I’d not have been so worried about dates matching!

@Bettybird hey I just wanted to ask how this turned out for you? I had a really similar experience today.

I had a private scan 6 days ago and she measured me at just over 6 weeks (in line with what I ) and had a EPU scan today as had spotting a few weeks ago. She measured me at 6+2, so basically the same as what the private scan measured me at 6 days ago! So confusing and deflating

Bettybird · 05/01/2024 19:37

Hiya,
It didn’t turn out well for me unfortunately, I consistently measured behind all the way up to my 12 week scan when it was discovered my baby had something called triploidy. However when I was sent to a fetal medicine unit in London, the sonographer there said that the machines in private clinics are newer than ones in an NHS regular hospital, so it may not be bad news for you! 🙏🏻
