negative test positive

I am such an obsessive worrywort, but if you can help me on this please do!

I have now done a couple of tests. Both were negative. I felt pg & was convinced I was despite the neg. result. Anyway, after the 2nd neg, done a couple of days ago, I decided I'd have to accpet it. Anyway, last night I was going to throw it out, and decided to have one last peek at it, and there was a faint line in THE window.

So now I'm totally confused. My cycle is usually26 days, but I have had a couple at 29 days. I did this 2nd test on day 29. I am now on day 31. No period yet but some spotting yesterday & today.

This is toatal mental torture & bloody expensive! Has anyone any experience of a neg. test showing up a faint positive line several hours after the test performance. It wasn't visible even 10 minutes after. Thanks for your help.

I don't think this is a true (or rather a reliable) positive - I think the instructions say the test should be discarded so I assume it no longer gives a valid result.

What the hell - do another one! The twin packs work out cheaper don't they? Or go to your doctors for a blood test?

Catt · 24/10/2002 16:38

monkey - you might hate what I'm going to say but I once had exactly the same, a very faint line. It turned out I WAS pregnant but only for a very short time and I had a very early miscarriage.

I really hope your situation turns out totally different from mine, but if I were you I'd do another test just in case. I know it's expensive but maybe your Hcg hormone level was a bit low before and it's gone up since??

Worth the money just to know one way or the other.

WideWebWitch · 24/10/2002 19:20

sorry monkey, no advice but blimey that was quick if you are! Even before you had your coil out IIRC! Let us know won't you?

PamT · 24/10/2002 19:36

I always had to do 2 tests before I got a positive because I trusted the kits that said they were accurate on the first day of the missed period. It used to take another couple of days before I got a positive test. I think it is slightly cheaper to get a chemist to do your test for you - or you could even make an appointment at the doctors, saying you don't feel right since you had the coil removed - they would do it free.

MiriamW · 24/10/2002 20:52

As Soupdragon said, I don't think that you can trust that one. If possible I would test again. It could have been a false negative, but only time and another test will tell. Certainly this time round I tested on the first day I could, and got a negative, to find that I tested positive a week later.

deegward · 24/10/2002 21:16

Monkey, with my ds did two tests both negative, had a bit of spotting. Ended up going to GP with painful boobs, as thought had cancer or some other thing.

I had to do a test for him, and heh presto nine months later ds. Go to your GP and get put out of your misery.

monkey · 25/10/2002 09:08

I did do another test, and again it was negative, but I'm now 6 days late. I know www hard to believe it's true so quick, so lots of me is thinking I can't be, but then I have felt ropey, and I have no period now (felt ropey a week or so before due). I thought I'd do the test and accept the result & try & forget about it, but I'm so up & down - one minute I think I am, the next I think I'm not...

I guess I'll go to docs next week if still nothing. I couldn't bear to do another home test. Trouble is it'll cost me a fortune ( not in UK). Maybe I could just chop off my head - that'll stop me obsessively thinking about it.

With dd I did a test very early because I was going to an annual club dinner and didn't want to drink the usual copious amounts if there was any chance I was pg. I got a very faint line which could have been my imagination, so played safe and told everyone I was staying sober because I was driving. Did the second test 3 days later and got another faint line (but not quite so faint).

Cost me a fortune in home pg tests - then I did 3 more before I was totally convinced there was a baby in there .

GillW · 25/10/2002 09:26

Quick tip: you can buy the tests a lot cheaper than they are in the shops: try this

monkey · 25/10/2002 11:52

Thatnks Gillw - just keep feeding my obsession ! They're amazingly cheap aren't they!

threeangels · 25/10/2002 14:19

All tests say to not interprep results after 10 min or so. This is because a false pos can show up due to a evaporation line in the result window.

I would always recommend a blood test at a nearby clinic. There usually around $20.00 if its a walk in clinic. It cost about the same if you were to buy 3 home tests. This way youll know for sure and you wont have to wait day after day taking those home tests.

deegward · 25/10/2002 21:49

GillW, great value for those test, the Scot in me wants to buy some for the future.

Mind you I did do the second test from my pack this time at 10 weeks 'cause I had stopped being sick ( yes I know very sad and paranoid).

I love on that site that you could buy 40 tests wow!

Monkey, good luck. I always feel that you know deep down. I think I would be the same as you at this stage, I think I am getting as nervous as you.

monkey · 28/10/2002 18:50

Thanks 3angels and deegward. Just to update, as if you'd care less, I still haven't had my period! Well over a week late now. I ordered some of those tests GillW said about, and I'm forcing myself to wait for them, so hopefully postie won't keep me waiting too long. We don't have clinics like that over here I don't think, and I can't face going to the docs, especially not with my 2 besties in tow. OOOh, am I or aren't I?? It'll be such a massive let-down if I have to wait a few more days and it's still negative. I'll definitely have to chop off my head.

Hi Monkey - just to say exactly the same thing happened to me - I was a few days later, did a test which was negative, but checked it a few hours later and there was a v. faint line. I was soooooo excited I did another test, which was negative...

Sorry the story doesn't end well, as I did eventually get my period - 8 days late.

But I'll keep fingers crossed your line gets stronger and shows up at the right time!

monkey · 29/10/2002 12:54

Thanks dot1. I'm getting pretty cheesed off about it now. I've sort of come round to the conclusion I definitely am not pg, I just wish I would get a period so I can get some clue as to where I am & what's going on, so I can try again or at least know when I might be fertile again. This sort of situation is not helped my my one-track mind, obsessive nature.

OP posts:
dot1 · 29/10/2002 14:10

I know - life completely stops in that 2 weeks (or more) between possible conception and your period - I hate it.... (God knows what we're going to be like when it does actually happen!)

monkey · 29/10/2002 18:54

where's that bloody postie??

OP posts:
Melly · 30/10/2002 13:13

Monkey, have just read your post, I really sympathise as a similar thing happened to me, sadly that pregnancy ended in early miscarriage, but I know exactly how you feel about just wanting to know one way or the other.
Any further news?

SueDonim · 30/10/2002 14:22

Your posts took me back to my first two pg's, in the 70's. Home tests were unavailable then and you had to wait to miss two periods before the doctor would run a test.

As I had irregular periods in those days I was forever wondering whether I was pg or not. Then when it did happen the second time I had no symptoms apart from missed periods, which wasn't unusal for me, and so I didn't realise until I was about 10wks gone! Annoyingly, my SIL knew I was pg before I did myself. She might have had the decency to tell me!!

monkey · 31/10/2002 08:32

oh well, postie finally arrived, got the tests, no surprise - negative. So I'm now 2 weeks late, which inheard of, but then I suppose the iud removal has toatlly upset my system, but I'm frustrated that I feel like I'm pg still, but def. can't be.

So does anyone have any idea how these things tend to work? Would I still possibly ovulate this cycle, even though a cycle hasn't technically begun I suppose as I haven't had a period. Would I just have a period at the normal time next time and skip this missing one altogether, or am I a timebomb that could blow at anytime?? I suppose either is possible/likely?

With the test I suppose at least I know my status, but that doesn't help me with trying to get pg. I guess I should resort to my original plan and chop off my head, at least it would stop all this uncertainty. Suedonim, while that must have been incredibly frustrating for you, in a way it maybe was easier in the seventies with the absence of tests etc - now there's just more to worry about instead of getting on with it. What do you think?

OP posts:
SueDonim · 31/10/2002 11:28

I think you're right, Moneky, in lots of ways. It wasn't that frustrating because it's just the way things were and you couldn't do anthing about it. Most people, by the time they'd missed two periods were pretty certain anyway, and in any case, did't like to count their chickens before they were hatched, so to speak. Miscarriage was accepted as 'one of those things' as the science behind them wasn't understood.

In fact, you've made me think about the screening for defects scenario, too. Today's expectant mums understandably get tied up in knots over testing; whether to have it done, what will the result be etc and for me it pretty much spoilt my last pg. Yet I haven't read anywhere that there are any more babies born with problems today than in the 70's. In fact, with better nutrition and healthcare, I would imagine babies are healthier than ever. In the 70's you didn't really give having a disabled child more than a vague passing thought - maybe it was just that ignorance was bliss. Not that I would want to go back to those days but it's such a pity there isn't some way of taking the terror out of screening.

WRT to your ovulation/period query, I understand it to be that ovualtion comes first, followed 14 days later by the period. So it might be that your ovulation is late. You could, say, ovulate today and have your period on 14th November. I hope your body soon gets back to normal, it must be miserable to be left hanging like that.

jac · 31/10/2002 11:38

Monkey, I was wondering at what point in your cycle did you have your IUD removed? Also, which type was it? If it was the hormonal one perhaps it takes a little while to get out of your system. I have a non hormonal IUD fitted and I've always understood that your normal fertility returns immediately when removed.

I really feel for you, it must be agony. But I'd keep on trying in the meantime! Did you buy any of those ovulation predition kits from that website? The're really cheap too. I've bookmarked that site for future possible need!

monkey · 31/10/2002 15:18

thanks both of you.

Well, I guess my iud (mirena, with hormones) must have thrown me off, although doc said all should be normal. I had it out just after my period - am now 2 weeks late.

Oh well, there's nothing I can do. I'm just going to have to grit my teeth, get on with it with hubby (It's not that bad really) and try & forget all about it (ha, some hope).

I might try & hide from mumsnet too, as all this comfort and advice is wonderful, but doing nothing for my pile of ironing and nail biting!

OP posts:
jac · 07/11/2002 13:46

Er ... Monkey

I thought you might like to know this but it may not be good news for you but I hope it helps. I visited my own doctor this morning to ask about my own non hormonal coil and wanted to know about the mirena coil. I asked her how long it takes for normal fertility to return and she said that it can take up to 6 months for the hormones to get out of your system. I am really sorry as I have been following your dilemma.

In the meantime though I would get another opinion from your own gp as it may be different in everyone and perhaps different doctors have different opinions.

Surely someone out there has had one removed and can remember when they next got a period. Please help Monkey!!

monkey · 07/11/2002 13:59

Thanks jac, that's so sweet!

Still no news btw.

I am surprised by what your gp said, as the level of hormones is so low, but then I'm not a doctor. I wasn't told it could take this long. All he said was to try and hold on till I'd had one period due to a slightly increased miscarriage risk, but other than that there was no reason that I couldn't get pg straight away.

I'm going to wait till next weekend, as I would be due my next one then, and if still no news one way or t'other I'll give him a ring.
Thanks a lot - I needed cheering up - really bad day!
