20 weeks no movement - active baby

Hi, I am 20 weeks pregnant, but I still can't feel any movement!

I was at the GP a few days ago and we listened to the babies heart beat with a little machine (no picture). She said the baby was moving around a lot as she kept having to find it again. The HB was good and strong too. It is still very low down.

I thought I felt something like a heart beat in my pelvis a few days ago. That feeling you get if you hurt yourself and the blood rushes to the area (without the pain) just extra blood going there. With one of my MCs I knew the baby was gone before being told so I must feel something.

Any thoughts? Come on baby move!!

I didn't feel any movements at all until 24 weeks, but if you have felt some and now aren't feeling any, I would contact your midwife and ask if you can come in.

@RocketAndAFuckingMelon thanks, I don't know if I felt anything really. Like a rush of blood to the area if that makes sense. That was on the Wednesday night I think and saw GP on Friday. I did mention it to her and she said it is still early.
I suppose after 2 MCs and loosing 1 twin this pregnancy I would like the reassurance of a little kick.

Hey lovely,

I am more or less in the same boat - baby has been super active and wiggly on scans, but I've not felt a lot yet (19 weeks this week). Definitely not an expert on any of this, but here is what I've gathered so far - I hope this calms the nerves a little bit:

  1. NHS website says it is normal to start feeling movement between 16 and 24 weeks of pregnancy; for first-time mums (I assume this probably means if you haven't gotten to that stage before?) it can be in the later end of this spectrum, so 20 weeks+.
  2. It really does depend on where your placenta is located - if it's at the front (anterior), you may feel the movements later when baby is a bit bigger.
  3. Early movements apparently do not feel like movements at all. I've read they can feel like popping, pulsing, rolling, and are quite small still so if you're not actively relaxing/paying attention you may actually not even register them!

What I've been feeling for the past week+ feels like pulsing / twitching of my stomach muscles (kinda like when you get an eye twitch) and it's so quick that I genuinely was unsure if it happened or I made it up, and if it's baby or my digestion or something! Also those early flutters are very irregular - I felt something one day, then nothing for a day, then felt something again...there's no pattern and it's not like you feel it all day every day. But as I've been experiencing more of the same kind of sensation every other day for over a week now...I am starting to tell myself Yep, that's the baby then!

TBH, the thing that helped me the most was one lady who wrote that if you feel something that makes you think "was this the baby?" , it was the baby.

So a very long answer short - Yes, I believe the pulsing thing you can't quite put your finger on was actually your little one! They do grow quite quickly at this stage, so I expect you can feel quite a difference in only a few days/a week time. xxx

I saw my dd kicking like mad and moving at an 18 week scan. Couldn't feel a thing.

Didn't feel it til 22 weeks

TokenGinger · 08/03/2022 15:54

I felt one kick at 24 weeks, then didn't feel him again until 26 weeks. I had an anterior placenta.

AwkwardPaws27 · 08/03/2022 15:55

Do you have an anterior placenta?
I do, & didn't start feeling definite movements until around 24/25 weeks.

irishfarmer · 08/03/2022 16:05

I don't know where my placenta is, I didn't think to ask at my scan. I have a scan at the end of the month so I will ask. But hopefully will have felt something by then. My last scan was at 13 weeks and baby was certainly wiggling away. Then the GP said on Friday it is moving around a lot, I just can't feel it! My DH swears he can hear baby moving around in there though.

I know everyone is different. Like when I do sit still and 'listen' to my body I sometimes think I feel a twinge. I'll go with what @Danani says and go with that being a little movement :)

I'm 21 weeks and have only felt something similar to what you describe. I'm not even sure if it's the baby or just gas as I have plenty of that too. I had my 20 week scan yesterday and everything was fine - fingers crossed it will be for you too! Both the midwife who did the scan and the consultant (separate appointment but on the same day as the scan) said it was normal not to feel much yet even though I have a posterior placenta.

showmethegin · 08/03/2022 17:10

It sounds totally normal. As a previous poster said the NHS said it is normal to feel movement between 16-24 weeks and it can be later if you have anterior placenta as it cushions the kicks.

I have anterior placenta and started to feel what I would absolutely know as kicks at around 24 weeks but they are unmistakable now I'm 26. Always speak to your midwife though if you are worried, that's what they are there for
