Prenatal screen results help :(

Hi everyone,
I just got my prenatal screen results and I'm so scared and confused. I screened 1 in 200 for downs.
My OB said my ultrasound looks normal
She also looked at my bloods and checked all the values and said they're all within what she considers normal range so we're both a little confused.

NT 2.7mm although idk how accurate this is as it took the sonographer 1.5 hours since baby wasn't cooperating
Nasal bone present

Beta HCG 1.60MoM
PAPPA 1.90 MoM

Please help I'm very nervous it's my first pregnancy and I'm only 24. Husband isn't too concerned as these have high false positives but I'm worried sick

Hi op. If it makes you feel better I got my results back this week and my odds were 1/131

My hospital has offered me extra testing as it's under their threshold of 1/150. Try not to worry as if they're not doing extra testing they aren't worried.

They referred me for the NIPT but my OB isn't concerned. I don't know if I can go through another round of "screening" bloodwork.

that's what I had today, the NIPT. Honestly it was a very quick blood test. I had one last Friday and they bruised me but they didn't for this one and it was really fast. Honestly it was fine. I would def get the NIPT done and see how you go.

stimpyyouidiot · 04/03/2022 18:08

Also I didn't think I could go through with it but decided my peace of mind was worth getting stuck with a needle again (and I hate hospitals/needles). I do feel like a pin cushion but hopefully that'll be it for now

The NIPT is very accurate. If this is something that's going to cause you a lot of worry I really recommend you get it. My results were 1:110 but the NIPT came back 1:10,000 and it really put my mind at rest. Just to explain some of the results for you (I read up A LOT!).

NT is generally considered 'normal' if it's under 3.5mm (although the higher the NT within that range, the higher your odds). For the HCG and Pappa a, 1MoM is considered 'normal' for both. A high hcg (over 1MoM) and low pappa a (under 1MoM) can be markers for Down syndrome.

I know it's worrying, but in terms of odds. There's more than a 99% chance your baby won't have Down syndrome (99.5% to be exact). But if you're worried, the NIPT will hopefully reassure you.

Thanks! Ya what's giving me hope is that my PAPPA is not low, it's actually higher than my HCG and even though my NT is 2.7 it's still "normal". My HCG is a little high but I've seen people with >2 MoM so I thought 1.60 wouldn't get me a screen of 1 in 200.

If you don't mind me asking what were your blood work and NT values ?

Hi OP, my third pregnancy I was given a one in seven change of downs (although baby's NT was 5.4) I paid for an NIPT (wasn't offered on the NHS back then) it came back one in seven billion! Baby is now six months old and perfectly healthy. NIPT does seem to be very accurate and really put my mind and ease when I was going through it

Sarahlouise86 · 05/03/2022 13:08

Ok firstly I would say please don't worry. At first glance it may seem like high odds, but it isn't it's low. Depending on where you are that result would not be considered high risk and you wouldn't have been offered additional testing.

Secondly, these are screening tests, they are not diagnostic and therefore they will have a much greater number of false positives as your husband says. And all they indicate is risk.

I had a high. risk of 1:51 for Down's syndrome for my first baby. I went into full panic mode at the time and was offered an amniocentesis. I did my research and decided to use the NIPT as an extra screening test and if it was positive then I would use the amniocentesis to confirm as that is the only definitive test. The NIPT came back negative and my son does not have Down's syndrome. I remember doing a lot of research at the time and women who had results such as 1:10 and less, didn't have children with downs syndome and conversely women who come back as low risk will do. If your hospital are classing 1:200 as high risk and their advice is to do the NIPT then I would. While still a screening test, it is very accurate for DS (not necessarily other conditions).

Thanks! Ive calmed down a little after doing research. I've realized my PAPP-A isn't low and that's commonly a marker for DS? I will probably do the NIPT to be sure. My anatomy scan is also in 2 weeks.

My NT was 2.2mm, the pappa a was 0.75 MoM and the HCG was 2MoM (or there abouts). So my hcg was quite high but I did read somewhere that having a girl can increase hcg levels, I did have a girl so always wondered if they were linked?

I've heard that too! Praying for a healthy baby at this point but I've thought girl from the start 💗
