Hey everyone

Don't know where to start with looking at formula.... I am aiming to breastfeed but want to get a tub of formula for at home just Incase for whatever reason I can't.

Any recommendations for formula???

Kendamil organic. Brilliant

mycarisBananacustard · 02/03/2022 10:50

I would advise maybe just get a little starter pack of the ready made formula in case you find you need it. Just the one in case you need to change brands as some just don’t suit individual babies.

Cow and gate and aptamil are v v similar , Kendamil has no fish oil if that’s something you want to avoid. Sma do starter packs too

I do hear people say not to have formula in case you are tempted to use it but I’ve found the opposite - having some as back up made me more relaxed knowing it was there and it didn’t sabotage bf having formula on the house !!

FTEngineerM · 02/03/2022 10:53

It’s always available in shops that are 24/7 so unless you live out in the sticks it’s not really a must.

We’ve gone through most of them and they definitely have different taste/smells/looks. Kendamil looks creamy AF but it’s also really bubbly so for our super gassy screamer it didn’t suit. I’d just wait and see what your baby is like you may need a comfort/LF/hydrolysed one who knows

Nutritionally they're all much the same as they're very heavily regulated, so aim for a brand that is always readily available where you are. We used cow and gate and had no problems with it.

RandomQuest · 02/03/2022 11:01

For ease go with a brand that’s readily available and comes as a ready made as makes life so much easier. In fact if you’re going to keep it in the house just in case then I’d choose a ready made starter pack with the teats because if it’s 3am you don’t need to faffing with sterilising bottles and waiting for a kettle to boil. Both of mine had Hipp Organic and I’d recommend but due to the tight regulations formula really is much of a much.

Cow and gate. Health visitor told me it's exactly the same as aptamil but £3 cheaper for the tub

TheBirdintheCave · 02/03/2022 11:16

We ended up with Aptamil as we were planning on breastfeeding but it didn't work out so my husband had to grab some formula in a rush.

cdba88 · 02/03/2022 11:45

Get a starter pack of ready made. You don't need a full tub of powder if you're planning to breast feed.

gemloving · 02/03/2022 12:04

I tried all the organic ones and my babe only liked SMA. It wasn't my first choice but it was his choice.

Nala97 · 02/03/2022 14:30

Hi all,

Thank you for the recommendations, As I said I am planning on breastfeeding and this is my first child so just want to be as organised as possible so will pop out and grab some pre made bottles of formula just Incase 😀

FTM here too, I've ordered the Kendamil ready to feed starter pack if for some reason I struggle with bf I'll have it as backup for night feeds in particular as I don't fancy mixing from powder at 3am... Will also take some to the hospital when I go have my baby, again in case I need it but not planning to use it if not necessary.

I went with Kendamil as they're, as far as I know, the only brand that don't have palm oil OR fish oil, is a fully British company and made in the UK. Nutritionally all formula has to meet the same standard so they're much the same in that regard, so choosing Kendamil was mostly a values judgment.

dannydyerismydad · 02/03/2022 14:52

By law if a formula ingredient has proven benefits, that ingredient has to be included in all brands. Any brand that markets itself as better because of something unique is adding unnecessary extras.

For this reason, pick the most affordable brand that is the easiest to buy locally at your nearest corner shop/supermarket/24 hour garage.

ChickenRoseNugget · 03/03/2022 11:28

Kendamil definitely! I chose organic but during the milk shortage I could only get hold of the normal one for a couple of weeks and she liked that too! She didn't like what the hospital gave her which was SMA I think.

crabette · 03/03/2022 11:34

I would say check with the hospital what they have in stock?

I was planning to breastfeed, but had a bit of a nightmare labour, and ended up in HDU the first night, so was unable to breastfeed and pretty out of it to be honest.

I hadn't even considered different formulas in advance, and the hospital just gave my baby Aptamil, as it comes in little instant bottles and that's what they had in stock. We were there for a week and they provided us with that for the duration, and I then went and got the powdered version for when we got home. I've had no issues with it and my baby is coming on brilliantly.

You're not supposed to change brands unless whatever you're giving doesn't agree with your little one, as it's bad for their tummies.

So if you have a strong brand preference, maybe take enough instant in your hospital bag for the first night as a just in case! Though hopefully you won't need it ♥️

We use Aldi’s. Cheapest by far and doctor recommended as he said it’s basically Aptimil with a different branding and half the price. We also have no problem switching between Aldi and the ready made Aptimil either

SunnydayeverythingsAOK · 03/03/2022 11:43

Also Aldi. If you do end up using it long term, it's going to save you a lot of money, so best to get your baby used to the taste of that one from the beginning.

ohgoodness2 · 08/03/2022 15:28

We use Kendamil, it's been great for our LO and they've got a subscription programme so you don't run out, also just released their RTF which my LO also enjoys x

Girlmumdogmumboymum · 08/03/2022 20:38

My HV said "I make no recommendations, I can't! But I mightve heard that Aldi formula is pretty much the same as Aptamil, but much cheaper!"

So we're buying a tin of Aldi milk and some Aptamil ready made milk for emergencies.
Ready made for in hospital whilst trying to get my milk to come in. Never did with my first...so I'm hopeful but need to keep myself aware that formula is a very real possibility for bubba full time
