Curious about c section

Just wondering incase this happens, but if you were breech and they had planned to have a c section, what happens in the meantime if you started to go into labour while in the breech position before the time of the planned section. This might not be the case for me, I am still breech but I'm just curious

It didn’t happen to me, but I was told to get to the hospital ASAP and they’ll do a section then.

This happened to me with my second baby. They just give you the c section as an emergency when you go into hospital in labour.

JustMeAndThee · 24/02/2022 10:10

You would still go into the hospital and the section would be performed at the earliest opportunity Smile I believe it's then seen as an EMCS.

If you have a planned c-section but you go into labour ahead of that, you call your midwife and you take your bag, and your notes and go to the hospital. They'll take it from there. You'll have an 'emergency' section (any unplanned c-section is called this no matter how chill) and your baby will be born. This happened to my SIL.
Labour usually lasts a long time, several hours at least, and there should be plenty of time for them to perform the c-section.
I laboured for nearly 24hrs (some of that v. gentle contractions + epidural) before they finally decided I should have a c-section b/c DBaby was in an awkward (but not actually breech) position. It was a good decision for me and for DD.
Usually, a planned c-section is booked for a date well before your due date to avoid the above scenario but sometimes, like with SIL, there are surprises.
Good luck. :)

I was in labour when I had my csection, it wasn’t a breech baby though it was fetal distress, I had to have an emcs

freshflowers2 · 24/02/2022 10:21

I had been in labour for a few hours with a breech baby when they decided to do a c-section.

All went fine, the anaesthetist had to wait til a contraction had passed before putting the spinal block in but they are used to that.

PiesNotGuys · 24/02/2022 10:23

Depends how fast the labour is.

I’m assuming for most people they would assemble their things and go to a hospital and they would either say, you aren’t in labour, or, you are, and suggest an urgent (if not emergency) c section, to which you would consent, or not, depending on the situation.

If you labour fast, like I do, choices are taken away a bit more, as babies come out without consideration for your planned place of birth. So in that scenario you would choose between trying to get to a hospital/planned place of birth as quickly ad possible and risk a breech delivery at the side of the road, or staying out and calling medical help to you as they have a better chance of attending that way. Those were my choices when my DC2 was breech but they did eventually turn (before being born at speed, as predicted)

This happened to me. Was done as an emergency and he ended up with a little cut on his ear because he was in an unexpected place in his rush to get out 🤣

I started with contractions a day before my planned CS. Not a breech but didn't want a VBAC. Had to insist a bit to come in as contractions were and remained 15-20 mins apart (albeit hideously painful as DS was back to back). Was plonked in triage for ages, and they decided that as I wasn't dilating, I could go back home under instruction to return if contractions started coming more frequently. After 24 hours DS turned and the pain virtually disappeared but still vaguely aware of the contractions. Had my CS as planned 36 hours after the contractions started - just let the anaesthetist know I was having contractions so they could time the spinal.

My waters broke ten days before my scheduled section. Went to hospital and they said I wasn't in labour yet so were going to have me wait as they were really busy, but told me if I did go in to active labour they'd have to do it right away. I guess they don't want the baby going down too much. As it happened I didn't so spent the night eyeing the fetal monitor and soaking my maternity pads (omg it just kept on coming) and had it in the morning.

Fleur405 · 24/02/2022 12:06

I know two people who went into labour before their scheduled sections (one with a breach baby and one who had other medical reasons why a vaginal birth was considered unsafe) - they were both just told to come in straight away and had a section pretty much straight away. Hopefully your baby turns though!

This happened to me 9 weeks ago! Waters broke at 0130 in the morning. Phoned triage, grabbed the last few things for my bag, drove myself into hospital while DH waited with our sleeping toddler for my parents to arrive.

I arrived at the hospital. They did a scan to check if he was still breech (he was), put me on a monitor, put a cannula in my hand for IV access, did a covid test and waited for DH to arrive. Once he arrived they woke the Anaesthetist, I guess changed and they took me into theatre and delivered DS at 0441.

I think I was lucky that it was a quiet night so I didn't have to wait for a theatre slot, I was having contractions, but manageable pain.

The theatre staff were great and totally chilled, they asked what I wanted on the radio, and while it was termed an emergency c-section, it was definitely more like an elective. A really positive experience!!
