I've been put down as high risk of GD due to PCOS and higher BMI. I'm having a test done in 3 weeks when I'll be 28 weeks. I was with my midwife today and she mentioned that as I keep getting thrush that won't go away this might be an indication of GD. My urine was all OK - I'd have thought if it was that likely then there would be something in my urine?

Didn't she do a finger prick? When I had GD it showed on that.

MerryMarigold · 23/02/2022 22:24

Had to do a fasting test to confirm it

Thrush is very common in pregnancy so it’s a bit of an ominous link. I wouldn’t worry about it until you’re tested between 26-28 weeks(that’s when resistance really increases and most likely to show GD)

Hey OP, I'm T1 Diabetic and I was only diagnosed a few years ago because I had recurring thrush, it was relentless and I had no idea why. Once I was diagnosed I was told its because of the amount of glucose in the urine - sugar helps candida to grow. If your urine came back as normal, then I would say it's unlikely at the moment that you have high sugar levels but a blood test is the best way to check for that. I think Thrush is common in pregnancy anyway! X

I had GD and never had glucose in my urine. I didn't have any symptoms at all. My midwife was really surprised when I was diagnosed 🤷🏻‍♀️ x

I had GD twice, quite severely, and never had thrush or glucose in my urine either. Dx with a GTT at 27 weeks the first time, and at 5w (!) by raging nighttime thirst + home blood sugars the second time. 28w is the time any symptoms would usually show in a first GD pregnancy but they can do the GTT any time if you feel it might be necessary.

Jellybean100 · 24/02/2022 00:08

Rinkly - did you have a follow up GTT/fasting sugars postnatally out of curiosity?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/02/2022 00:27

Nope, sorry OP - I was diagnosed with GD at 29 weeks after the 2 hour bloods/sugary drink test (they couldn't do the test at the typical 28 weeks as it fell over Xmas), and my urine always was and is still clear for high sugars at each fortnightly midwife check.

I think urine tests just aren't as accurate, except perhaps for checking things like UTI's - btw I have PCOS and a higher BMI too. I've avoided thrush so far in pregnancy though - but I do take a daily "vaginal" probiotic to prevent it that's pregnancy safe (oral Optibac for Women), might be worth trying?

Midwife is right.
I have gd its not been too bad.

The glucose blood test will confirm conclusively

My gestational diabetes didn’t show more than once in urine as only once did I have orange juice and I normally have a very low sugar diet so wonder if this is why. I would definitely want to be sure as mine was unmonitored for so many weeks despite me mentioning I was sure I had it. My bmi normal but I have a really unusual and exhausting thirst. So it can show in different ways and good to rule out. We also saw signs on latest scan as baby’s tummy measurement centile dramatically in only 3 weeks

RinklyRomaine · 24/02/2022 09:25

Sorry @Jellybean100 only just seen this.

Yes. 13w post partum both times. With DS1 they were entirely back to normal. DS2 who is 18m had me on insulin by 20w and although they dropped at the 13w check, 1 year later they were borderline pre diabetic. I've since lost 2 stone but do need to get them rechecked, my surgery is super stingy with appointments.

I'm far too old to think about any more babies but I know a 4th child would see me very over medicated as it tends to progress each subsequent pregnancy and my T2 risk is much higher despite being a healthy weight.

It is worth keeping an eye. I was never Dx with my daughter but did have polyhydramnios and probably should have been tested. Finding out with DS1 felt like such a blow but honestly it was all very manageable with a good diet and plenty of exercise. Even 6 x insulin a day and metformin which sounds terrifying really wasn't too bad.
