Sleeping on your back

I've heard the warnings from 20 weeks plus I think?

I am currently 19 weeks pregnant and sometimes accidentally roll onto my back when I'm asleep! I'm trying to sleep on my side but I'm always conscious how long I've been on my back even when I'm laid on my bed just on my iPad or reading.

Does everyone side sleep and is it important? My midwife hasn't mentioned anything.

Thank you

Side sleeping is really important but not until third trimester so that's probably why your midwife hasn't said anything. It's more about the position you go to sleep in, if you wake up on your back the advice is to just roll over. Apparently the position you go to sleep in is the one that you spend most time in esp when movement is harder in third tri! This does include avoiding laying down when awake too, I prop myself up when reading or watching something on the iPad so I'm not lying on my back. This article from Tommy's outlines why side sleeping is important and when to start www.tommys.org/pregnancy-information/im-pregnant/sleep-side/sleep-side-pregnancy-campaign

I’m 16 weeks and still sleep on my front 😂

I always slept on my side. But I'm quite a conscious sleeper. If you do roll on to your back though there's not much you can do and I wouldn't worry about it too much. I think if you lay on your way for really long after a certain amount of weeks it's not the best thing to do.

I'm 18 weeks and have been trying to get into the habit of sleeping on my side for a while now, I've heard as well as the other comment - the position you fall asleep in is most important because that's the one you spend most time in. If you occasionally roll onto your back while sleeping that should be fine and just roll over. When laying in bed relaxing I usually am propped up at my back so laying upwards as opposed to flat out. Same as lying in the bath which is safe to do Smile just slightly angled up at the back.

Thanks so much everyone. @ScottishLass22 I will try that angled position!
