Anything I should expect from my anti-D

Hi all

Got my anti-D injection on Friday - and was wondering if it's likely to affect my health or the bub's movements at all. Are there any side-effects?

Also, which hurts most, a needle in the arm or in the arse?

Had it in the bum with both previous pgs but have seen on here that NICE now recommend it is done in the arm (not that I have checked). It didn't hurt much and as far as I'm aware there are no side effects (certainly none that I recall)

I didn't realise it would be in my bum and the midwife was really really shocked when I was wearing a maternity thong the first time I went (think she was a bit old school). She said' you're pregnant you know' errm yep I do know. Still makes me laugh now...

Arm hurts more - more fat in your bum/thigh(!) so ask for it there - a nurse gave me that tip!! The site of the injection is sore for a while after if I remember rightly (more than with other types of injection)

ive just had mine, in the bum and i must say it didnt half sting its not the needle but the amount of stuff there putting in. only takes 10 sec though and then its all done. the only thing my mw said about side effects was that i had to hang around incase i had a fit for 20 mins. it was the same when i had anti d after giving birth to dd2 but that hurt less as there it was smaller. bum not sore yet but i only had it 30 min ago so ill let you know

Specially in mine.

LOL at the maternity thong as well. I didn't know you could get those!

Thanks for responses - will perhaps ask when I get it done because they will see me in the flesh so to speak. My arm is fairly fatty at the mo so perhaps it won't hurt too much! Otherwise bum it is...

They always did mine in my thigh..seems to have been just me though!

Shouldn't affect your or babies health at all - I never got any side effects from the jabs

Mine was in the arm and it hurt much much less than a dental injection, so don't worry.

The woman who did mine said the ones they give in the arm are different from the ones in the bum/thigh and tend to hurt less.

Dont have a clue if she was right or not, but mine didnt hurt much at all, and I am a wimp!!!

Good luck.

I have had one in the arse and one in the arm. they both hurt like hell. mw told me that they recomend them in the arm but the pain comes from the fact that it is a blood product and it is a really thick solution. i can honestly say that i am not a wimp but i hate the fecking injection. good luck friday

I have had six of these all in thigh, some i hardly felt, but one was agony maybe it can depend on who is doing it.

coppertop · 03/01/2008 14:02

My arse is obviously very well-padded as I didn't feel a thing.

Mumblesmummy · 04/01/2008 12:34

Coppertop- I'm the same! I barely noticed she'd done it!!

I got told that if you had it and it's not needed, there's totally no effects at all, but if you don't have it and you do need it then you might end up with a poorly baby (altho I was also told by another midwife that it's subsequent pregnancies that are affected). Anyway, I didn't notice any changes to me or baby afterwards.

I think it hurts a lot less in the bum than in the arm or thigh. Anti-D is a blood product, but obviously is checked and tested. There is a lot of information on the web about it.

I asked for my husband's blood group to be tested because if he was rhesus negative then there would be no need for Anti-D. Unfortunately he was rhesus positive, but they don't chec as standard, which seems a bit daft if you're sure who the Dad is. My son was born rhesus negative, so I didn't need a shot after birth.
