First scan - What’s the chances it’s all ok?

My first scan is in a week and this is my first pregnancy so I’m very worried it won’t be ok. According to LMP I’ll be 13 weeks at the scan although I expect it’ll actually turn out 12 weeks.

My main concern is that I have very few pregnancy symptoms. I have had no morning sickness whatsoever, no cravings, no sensitivity to smells… The only real symptoms I’ve had is big sore boobs (although I’m not sure if they’re even sore anymore? Or if I’ve just got used to them?!) and that I’m permanently exhausted. I did have a lot of mild, period like cramps and tummy feelings for several weeks but I really don’t know where you draw the line between normal cramps and worrying cramps…

The only thing I can confidently say is that I have had absolutely no bleeding. Not a drop. Not even vaguely pink discharge.

Someone reassure me!! I just don’t feel pregnant at all :(

It's totally normal to have little to no symptoms. Lots of women don't! As for your boob soreness waning, that's normal too! Some women are sore all throughout, but a lot see a sharp decline in their soreness as they approach/enter the second trimester. Your timing is just right for that too!
Try not to fret Smile

Rookie2022 · 17/02/2022 22:55

Thank you… I’m knew morning sickness would likely stop by now (for those who have it) but didn’t realise soreness would too! So that’s reassuring.

The other positive is that I’m having a very low risk pregnancy on paper (according to midwife at booking in)

Just wish I’d booked a private scan weeks ago!!! It feels so cruel to have to wait months to maybe be told it’s not happening :(

In my first pregnancy I had no real symptoms apart from what you've described, sore boobs and tiredness and she is now 6 years old. It is stressful when you have little to no symptoms, hope all goes well with the scan next week.

Got my 12 week scan tomorrow, so sounds like you're a similar gestation to me :)

BlueForgetMeNot · 18/02/2022 04:09

Congratulations on your pregnancy OP. That's a great positive that there hasn't been any signs of blood.
Sore boobs are another positive!
Let us know how your first scan goes Thanks

I think we all worry to be honest. I was exhausted too with my pregnancies, only felt properly sick with those I lost strangely. I recall having more veiny skin and tiredness and I couldn't wear a scarf with my first as that made me feel nauseous but nothing else - but that's just me, many people are different.
Good luck next week, I'm sure it'll be just fine 👌🏻

Carebear99 · 18/02/2022 06:07

I've got my 12 week scan next week, I'm convinced it'll be bad news. I've had private scans and seen the heartbeat and that it is growing, but I've convinced myself I won't see a heartbeat next week. I know how you feel

Carebear99 · 18/02/2022 06:13

Just to add I had nausea but that's gone. My boobs haven't really hurt at all, they aren't veiny. I've been more tired and lost 7kg in last 5 weeks, I'm overweight so my boobs may have got bigger but I've lost weight and the boobs are always somewhere I lose weight first and they haven't got smaller. I don't feel pregnant either

NetflixAndSauvignonBlanc · 18/02/2022 06:49

I have found this website helpful for reassurance, you enter how many weeks/days pregnant you are and it gives you a probability that everything will be fine.

datayze.com/miscarriage-reassurer

Carebear99 · 18/02/2022 07:02

I have that website saved on my saved tabs on my phone. I look at it daily today it is at 2.7% chance of miscarriage

Teaandcrumpets95 · 18/02/2022 08:37

I was terrified of my 12 week scan- to the point I didn't want to go, I was so sure it would be bad news.

It wasn't and at now 30 weeks things are still going swimmingly.

Things will likely be okay but unfortunately no one will ever know until after the fact. I just reminded myself on the day whatever the situation is atm it is outside of my control, the scan doesn't change the outcome.

In terms of symptoms- my nausea had completely gone at that point and I just had a few aversions remaining- honestly though symptoms mean nothing so I wouldn't read too much into it.

Wishes you all the best for today op xx

Coco9910 · 18/02/2022 09:01

Hi @Rookie2022 I was exactly the same..no symptoms at all except sore boobs which went away before I was 12 weeks and I’m now 17+1 and baby was all happy and growing as they should when I had my 12 week scan. Had my 16 week appointment last week and heard the babies heart beat. I know it’s hard when you have no symptoms but just try and trust your body 💕

Rookie2022 · 18/02/2022 18:14

Thanks everyone! There’s now less than a week to go so here’s hoping…

I know my chances of a miscarriage at week 12 is really small but I may have had a symptomless one ages ago when the risk was much higher.

I see all these posts about MMC and ectopics but they mainly seem to be found at early scans or picked up at early pregnancy units (NHS scans, not necessarily cause they’ve booked one privately) and I don’t really understand how…

Why are women having scans and appointments if the miscarriage was completely symptomless?! Or is it because they are having higher risk pregnancies so being kept a closer eye? Or maybe they did actually have a teeny tiny bit of spotting after all?

Because there seem so be SO MANY stories of MMC when I thought it was rare… :(

OP posts:
Pamparam · 18/02/2022 18:24

Well if it’s any consolation OP I’ve sadly had two MMCs and they had both started to show signs of spotting by the stage you’re at. And my two successful pregnancies I had no real pregnancy symptoms. So I think your chances are very very good!

Rookie2022 · 20/02/2022 11:47

@Pamparam thank you for your reassurance, especially given how hard it must be to write that.

I’m coming to terms with that fact that I think I’m just a major control freak! I’m a super organised person too so this weird limbo is really weird for me.

Would doing a pregnancy test tell me anything? I see lots of women do them to check line progression but I’ve only done 2 way back at new year!

OP posts:
Coco9910 · 20/02/2022 15:19

@Rookie2022 if I were you, I wouldn’t do a test because after 8 weeks they can become weaker due to the hook effect so it could have the opposite effect for no real reason! I was the same as you though, just hoping everything was okay at the 12 week scan and thankfully it was! What day is your scan on?

Rookie2022 · 20/02/2022 15:41

@Coco9910 hmm that’s a point… although goon effect does sound very rare? With no nausea it feels unlikely I’m swimming with too many hormones! I was wondering more if a positive would tell me anything? Or if you can test positive for a long time after MMC? (Bit like with Covid tests showing a trace for ages after)

Scan is on Friday. Thankfully it’s first thing so don’t have the whole day to think about it.

OP posts:
Carebear99 · 20/02/2022 15:54

I called 111 recently due to cramps. They said to do a pregnancy test, which is just stupid as that showed a faint line.

I've also got my scan on Friday at 830am, can't wait but also very nervous

Tinkles78 · 20/02/2022 15:59

I totally understand your worries cause I was exactly the same with my first pregnancy! Not a single symptom, but everything was absolutely fine at my 12 week scan!

I'm currently 11+2 and had a private scan at 8 weeks showing the correct sized baby with a heartbeat so I'm very much hoping all is ok this time too. I did have some nausea and heartburn between 5-10 weeks but that's all gone now and I feel totally normal again. There's always a little niggling worry in the back of my mind until I get the 12 week scan out of the way!

I'm sure all will be fine Smile congratulations!

InvisibleDragon · 20/02/2022 16:32

I'm sure everything will be fine!

I was like this before my 12 week scan - couldn't bring myself to believe there would actually be a baby there until I saw it on the scan! A friend said she felt the same way too.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 20/02/2022 17:04

It's rare but it's not unbelievably rare. Miscarriages happen in roughly 10-25% of confirmed pregnancies. Missed miscarriages only occur in about 1-5% of pregnancies. That means it's unlikely to happen to you but across thousands and thousands of women on Mumsnet, it happens quite a bit.

On a personal story level - my mum had two full term pregnancies with no symptoms at all until she got kicks. No nausea etc ever. Both 100% healthy. I had a pregnancy with no symptoms that ended in missed miscarriage. 10 week scan was perfect, 12 week scan showed fetal death at approx 11 weeks. She is lucky, I was unlucky.

You are much more likely to be lucky (95-99%) than unlucky (1-5%)
