Am I safe in work?

Name changed as thread could be outing.

I'm a TA in a primary school and have been off work for some time with severe morning sickness. I'm almost 21 weeks and am due to return to work the week after next. I still feel rough, but not as bad as a few weeks back. I'm still not sure I can handle 8 hours a day in a classroom.

I'm really concerned about returning to work now the isolation period is being removed, as I could potentially be in a classroom with up to 30 children who are covid positive. I realise for the majority of people omicron is nothing to worry about, but the government, as well as health care professionals I have seen, have been very clear about the potential risks to pregnant women and their children if mum catches covid. I am double jabbed, but have been told this does not remove the risk altogether.

I know two pregnant teachers at other schools that have been told that the school cannot guarantee theirs and their babies safety, so they have been suspended on full pay. This has not been an option offered to me.

Are any other pregnant teachers/TAs in the same position? I think it's easy for a non-pregnant person to say oh you'll be fine, but I'd be interested to see what those who are actually going through it think.

I’ve had a lot of time off for a variety of reasons. I’m 20 weeks now. I’ve had one jag and feel the same about covid. My school say it’s fine as no longer government/nhs advice. It worries me, especially thinking forward to 3rd trimester. Not sure what can be done though!

Officially there is no need for anyone to shield or work from home anymore. Whether that is based on scientific evidence or for political reasons is open to debate.

What strikes me is that Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance have gone very quiet. They cannot be seen to disagree with the government, but they're certainly not voicing their agreement.

Have you spoken to your union for advice?
