Transverse lie@ 33 weeks

Hi, I am 33 weeks pregnant by my period dates but 32 weeks by dating scan (convinced my dates are correct so using them!) and my baby is in the transverse lie and has been for a long time. My fundal height is only measuring 28 cms. Have to go back to the midwife on the 11th when im 33/34 +4 and if baby is still transverse being sent to hospital to see a consultant about having a c-section at 36/37 weeks, as they dont want to risk the waters braking early.

Just wondered if theres anyone else in the same situation? And if so what have you been advised?

Also is the position dangerous?

Thanks x

Why does nobody think the baby will move? 32 weeks is really early. Have you read anything or been told about external version? (Where they try manually to move the baby from the outside...gets mixed reports and is not guaranteed successful.) Has anyone pointed you in the direction of Optimal Foetal Positioning? Do you have a local NCT teacher or Active Birth teacher whom you could just call for a chat about these (you can ask your midwife too but I was thinking of pre-empting her tbh.)?
If you google OFP or Jean Sutton you'll find the website that gives tips on things you can do round about now to try to get the baby into a better position for birth. Evidence is anecdotal, but trying to do something is better than not knowing that there are things you can try and then ending up with a possibly unnecessary or unwanted caesarian.
I was helping a friend with this recently, and read Jean Sutton's advice on wearing tight cycling shorts. The idea is that you make the baby a bit uncomfortable, to encourage him/her to move into a head-down position. Apparently you have to really just go for it and wear them all day...
She also has some advice about belly-binding, but I don't know anyone who has tried this.
Being transverse in itself is not dangerous - but the baby can't be born vaginally, so a caesarian is necessary.
Good luck!

great advice from prism.....

the only danger i know of with a transverse lie is that the neither the head nor the bottom engages in the pelvis, so if the waters break, the cord can prolapse and that can be dangerous..... BUT bear in mind your baby has bags of time to move...

also c.s at 36 - 37 weeks does have negatives so make sure you explore all options

Do you swim?
Apparently diving to the bottom of the pool a few times can do the trick...

If the baby is still transverse late on in the pregnancy, they don't like you to go into labour because of the risk of cord prolapse and shoulder presentation - hence the thought of scheduling an early caesarian. TBH though it's better for the baby to come out when ready - have a browse round the homebirth.org site and let us know what you think.

Plenty of time for the baby to turn. My twins were spinning like tops at 36 weeks and there were TWO of them in there.

Thanks for the speedy and informative replies. Baby Has been in this position for weeks, so midwife thinks she is happy there. My tummy is very small so they mentioned that there might not be enough space or water for her to easily turn.

Have tried various positions and also I'm very active to try and encourage her to move.

Hopefully she will turn herself by the 11th- if not they will scan and see if there is any physical reason why she cant they mentioned cord could be short and various other reasons. I dont really like the idea of the evc or the c-section so will talk to my midwife about the pointsyou guys made and also look at that website etc.

Thankyou very much

TBH 36/7 weeks seems really early. I had this and in our area the consultant just admits you to hospital at 37 weeks to wait until 39 weeks for a cs (if lo hasn't arrived by then). Then you're nearby if the waters break.

As it happened, I didn't need to go into hospital because lo turned head down at 37 weeks (then turned transverse again at 39 weeks, but that's another story), but I got some good advice on mn about it.

36-7 weeks is early for a cs I mean

I had transverse lie with my ds1 at this stage, in fact he would go round and round like a goldfish until he was born..He seemed to prefer lying transverse but still got down into a head down position well before birth(he was born at 36 weeks), so I really think they might be jumping the gun a bit
