Eating sweets in pregnancy = fat baby?

I never used to eat sweets before I was pregnant. Have been craving them, and giving in, throughout pg. Now 35 weeks pregnant. can you tell me if you think i will have a big fat 10 lbs baby? Has anyone else eaten loads of sweets and then gone on to have a nice little 7 pounder?

more like fat mummy if my experience is anything to go by! 3 babies, biggest 7.8lbs, ate loads and put on shed loads weight - now have to get it off esp as ds nearly 8 months!

lulumama · 01/01/2008 20:19

as long as your blood sugar levels are normal, I wouldn;t worry... i take it all your urine tests have been normal for sugar?

some women have big babies, some don;t , i honestly don;t think the amount of sweets you eat has a huge bearing on it

your teeth might fall out though!

FWIW, I craved strawberry hubba bubba when pregnant with DC2, and she was 7 lb 8 oz, at full term... and i had to have a filling at 37 weeks!

oh lol, I don't think it makes much odds.

Neither do I think it really matters how big the baby is. An 8 or even 9 or 10 pounder, say, probably isn't "fat". They are probably just bigger and/ or more muscular and this is, I would have thought, GOOD as it means less chance of complications, more chance of them squeezing themselves out of there, etc. This means an easier labour for you. Ds was 8.5 lb, dd 8, both were easy labours but ds was easier.

I think, and I may be talking rubbish, BUT how heavy your baby is is mainly down to how much space they have to grow, and how long they have to grow. Not the odd packet of minstrels.

Thanks you put my mind at rest, and i'm going to have some ice cream. but a sat next to a women at ante natal and thought that her bump was nearly as big as mine so was feeling quite reassured - turns out she was having twins!

Don't worry unless, as already said, you have gestational diabetes. If you eat more sugar, your body will produce more insulin to deal with it and your blood sugar levels will stabilise, so the blood that your lo takes his/her nutrients from is not particularly high in sugar. The extra sugar will go somewhere of course: if it is too much to burn it will form 'maternal padding'

LOL - ate a shedload of chocolate during first pregnancy - gained four stone and had under eight pound baby. This pregnancy I'm craving brazil nuts and bananas. Will probably be a monkey by my due date

Tutter · 01/01/2008 20:29

ime eating too many sweets in pregnancy = fat mummy not fat baby

rosalinda · 01/01/2008 20:30

'maternal padding' Yes thats it, thats what I have! Aah! I like that term

Rosa - to reassure you, I craved Haribo sweets SO much during my pregnancy. I used to eat 2 or 3 bags of either Starmix or the sour ones each week. Ds was 7lb 14oz (and 1 week overdue) at birth so not big at all (i won't talk about my weight 18 months later as it is not pretty ).

Clara - x post! Alright confession time, I was also occasionally eating a bag at a time but didn't want to admit it

rosalinda · 01/01/2008 20:34

Don't you know Haribo sweets make you go loopy!!! Your baby may be little but he might be a crazed lunatic with creative tendencies

Rosa - lol! I am waiting for the day that DS has Haribo Starmix for the first time as I fully expect him to do a big relaxing 'aaaawww' kind of thing as in 'aw, I feel as if I have come home now' iykwim

rosalinda · 01/01/2008 20:42

Quite frankly Im shocked! I work with children with ADHD. You are playing with fire. I was just talking about a couple of pieces of cristallised ginger after a three bean salad and crispbread. God, what have i unearthed here!!

  • sorry, I was just trying to be lighthearted about the issue that you asked about - but I am sure if you stick to your crystallised ginger, your child will not end up with ADHD as mine and Clara's child will do!

Clearly my body during pg didn't understand about the potential consequences of what it was craving but thanks for the warning anyway!!

rosalinda · 01/01/2008 20:53

only joking. your kids won't have ADHD from Haribo. I promise. Its usually alcohol abuse in pregnancy that causes it - WKD and bacardi breezers

Though if you crave coloured sweeties like fruit pastilles it is worth seeking out those with no artificial colours in it - they are not good for anybody
