Okay. 3rd baby. Have done this all before but cant remember what they need! Help!!
Plan to breastfeed as I have my other two, and would like to use reusable nappied this time (potentially).
Dont want to spend on things that are not useful pr essential.

Thanks

Well, what did you have before that you didn’t think was helpful or essential?

People swear by a Moses basket but I didn’t have one. The baby napped on me/a snuzcloud then in his room in crib once he was 8 weeks (a flat though so he wasn’t all the way upstairs)

BertieBotts · 18/02/2022 16:00

Do you still have stuff from the other two or is there a big gap?

You just need the basics really.

Somewhere safe for them to sleep
Something to keep them warm when they sleep
Clothes
A way to transport them (car seat, sling/buggy)
Somewhere to put them down in the day
Something for them to shit in :o and mop up puke, drool etc
Somewhere to clean the shit and something to clean it with
A bag to transport all the nappies, muslins, change of clothes etc
Some way of cleaning them and drying them (bath/seat, towel)

Anything else you can get if and when you need it.

Dd2 is a week old today. So far have mainly used; nappies, cotton wool, changing mat, changing bag, sudocreme, Moses basket, next to me, bouncer, pram, car seat, clothes, blanket, muslins, breast pads, nipple cream, nursing bras, maternity pads. Unused - Got a baby bath seat but she can't have a bath just yet, sling, bibs, grobags, milk storage bags, baby monitor, baby towels and wash stuff, little kit with things like nail clippers, hair brush, thermometer etc. Think that's it..

Daenarys · 18/02/2022 16:09

Not a big gap but got rid of everything so starting again.
Feel like those early years are a bit blurry and just needed pointing in the right direction

We ended up with moses basket, crib and cot first time round and babies ended up co sleeping so they were never used. But keen to explorr snuz pod/next to me style crib.

And I think a sling will be essential with having 2 other fairly young kids to run around with.

Thanks...making lists now....

Amazon Prime!

Personally if you know cosleeping suits you I wouldn't bother with the purpose built ones as they are much too small and they have a silly weight limit of 9kg or something as well as a tiny wall between you and the baby or an enforced drop. Just get the cheapest IKEA cot and butcher it into a cosleeper. It's easy to do, you just make it up with three sides and then adjust the mattress base until the mattress is level with your bed. You can then either get a custom mattress fitted to bridge the gap or use a standard mattress and block the far side gap with rolled up towels or blankets.

BertieBotts · 18/02/2022 17:31

If you had a sleepyhead or similar last time guidance has changed and they are not recommended for night time sleep.

WorkEvent · 19/02/2022 08:15

Clothes, nappies, sleeping bags or blankets, a cot or crib, pushchair and/or carrier, and a car seat.

On the cloth nappies front - if you’re not 100%, you could try hiring a newborn kit and see how you get on?

Ursusmajor · 19/02/2022 08:23

I used a bouncy chair a lot - we bought a cheap 2nd hand one. My baby liked the more upright position. But it was essential between about 2weeks old and 5 months and useless before and after.

Daenarys · 19/02/2022 08:34

Thanks all
@WorkEvent thanks......hiring initially sounds sensible will look into this. Keen from environmental perspective to use cloth nappies but aware it may not be easy.

Reusable nappies - tots bots

Sling - ergo embrace

GestationalDiabetes · 19/02/2022 09:18

I could have written your post OP, from 3rd child to cosleeping to reusables!
I really like Little Lamb resuables so bought 20 new ones second hand at less than half what they cost (they’d just been washed once and not used ). So worth keeping an eye out .
I’m 32 weeks now and just bought two packs of 85% biodegradable nappies from Waitrose to start us off at hospital hopefully.

I’ve been considering a side cot thing and a friend has one no longer needs .

I have a baby car seat but lost its newborn insert so going to see if can buy just this bit! And am behind on seeing what clothes we have but probably have enough to start us off from our older two and will buy more after birth if needed.

Might look out for a portable changing mat !

Daenarys · 19/02/2022 10:16

Thanks @Caspianberg - was looking at the ergo sling. Its a minfield. Had a generic baby bjorn one before but didnt use it much and certainly not for newborn. Want something to keep baby in from tiny this time.

@GestationalDiabetes
Congratulations and good luck with baby3! How old are your other 2? Portable change mat is a great idea!!!!

If you're keen on a sling and due any time in the second half of the year, don't forget coats that are compatible with the sling. Most of them double up as maternity too.

Caspianberg · 19/02/2022 10:37

Ergo embrace is great from newborn, I used to take Ds out of hospital.

If I was buying now with other older children I would buy the stokke Tripp trapp newborn seat to go on the highchair. Meaning somewhere safe up high out of small children falling on baby etc when your busy making food and whilst you eat

GestationalDiabetes · 19/02/2022 11:07

Our other two are 15 and 10! So it’s amazing I still have any baby things but helpfully I got so attached so many favourites they’ve followed us through several house moves!

Daenarys · 19/02/2022 16:22

Love the idea of the stokke but its pretty pricey! Will keep an eye on 2nd hand.

Agree re bouncy chair.

Love how helpful this forum is!

We bought the stokke high chair in the end when Ds was 5 months. ( just main seat)

But Ds was nosey, he was awkward 3-6 month age when we tried to eat as hated being at floor level alone, so dh or I ended up eating one handed or cold food. So in hindsight I would have just splurged the extra for the newborn part as could have used from day 1 when I was trying to make tea/ food/ eat.

But secondhand Tripp trap with new or secondhand newborn attachment would be perfect. We don’t have a secondhand market really where we live unfortunately.

Cotbed minus one side attached to your bed
Baby vests and sleepsuits
Sling
Pushchair
Maybe a bouncer or smt for downstairs
Breastfeeding pillow
Set of reusable nappies second hand, and a nappy bucket
Car seat
Play mat or padded blanket for the floor
