I am 8 weeks pregnant and am suffering from terrible morning sickness. Luckily I am not being too sick but I can hardly eat a thing (I can't even manage a whole biscuit). I don't fancy anything and everything tastes horrible but I'm still really hungry! I'm also getting awful cold sweats.

I wondered how other newly pregnant mums with morning sickness were coping. What are you eating? I know they say plain and little and often but what are you literally eating? How do you manage to survive every day?

Also when will it end? Soon I hope.

Hope to hear soon from fellow sufferers!

Hi

Most important question: how are you dong with fluids? Its those you should be concentrating on at this stage.

I'm going to pop off and find you a link for a support group I used to volunteer for, they have good self help tips etc.

PeachyHasAFiggyPudInTheOven · 01/01/2008 15:31

here

Also search hyperemesis generally (that site seems to be crashing abit today), there are several good groups out there.

But mainly its fluids, rest and looking after ytourself. I ended up on meds and a drip, so acting now might help you avoid that

Pheebe · 01/01/2008 15:33

In the early stages all I could stomach was orangina and rich tea biscuits! Not great but better than nothing. Having the orangina first allowed me to eat a few biscuits.
Other people swear by ginger beer, I'm sure others will have more ideas for you
congrats anyway

Hi Deborah - I know exactly how you feel - so my sympathies. I take Nux Vom 30c and Ipecac 30c homeopathic remedies and I get acupuncture done regularly - it won't make it go away completely but it does really really help so that it is sufferable.

I usually get to 6 weeks then it hits me and with DD lasted until 5months (friend then gave me acupuncture). This time I went for acupncture before TTC and am now coming up on 11 weeks. I still feel rough but not nearly as bad as with first 2 pgs. Good luck and hope you feel better soon.xxx

Hello,

I'm almost 7 weeks and am really struggling with the all day sickness so big hugs to you! I find eating a little bit of something helps a bit, but not always. And all I want is toast and marmite or plain crisps. Exactly the same as last time - I really struggle to keep up the healthy eating in the early days!

Hope it gets better soon. I had it last time from about 7-14 weeks. Felt great when it went!

Oh Deborah - firstly I really hope this sickness leaves you soon but everyone is different. And no matter what it will all end eventually when your little bundle arrives, though I hope it's much sooner!

I know how awful it is having suffered through all of my both pregnancies. As a result, I'm afraid I don't have any tips as nothing seemed to work for me and I ended up on a drip so I guess that fluids are definitely more important than food, if you can't manage the, try something like melon that has a lot of water in. And have plenty of rest. I found I was worse when I was trying to do stuff.

Bea0001InowwishIhadabettername · 01/01/2008 16:43

Hi deborah,

I'm 6wks and the description of your symptons match mine too. I've found that crushed ice and slightly salted popcorn help (I was also using flat coke but have been warned against the caffeine in it).

I've just read the tips on the website Peachy recommended so will try some of those and hope for the best!

Meanwhile, even more big hugs!

glitterbird · 01/01/2008 17:33

I had awful sickness from 6 weeks to 9.5 weeks and what really helped me was peppermint tea which dh made for me all the time as well as hot water bottles and plenty of rest. Only problem is now I am 16 weeks and been fine for ages the smell of peppermint makes me feel ill . I was also recommended ginger tea which you can make with thinly sliced fresh root ginger and boiling water. if you are not liking it you can add some honey and lemon to make more palatable. (this is also good for a cold) good luck for most people it does not last too long

finallypregnant · 01/01/2008 17:37

I am feeling better at 15 weeks although still have the odd really sick day. I felt like you a few weeks ago and looked like a corpse. My cousin is a Bowen Technique practitioner and she did a couple of treatments on me which helped loads.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 01/01/2008 17:39

I was a peppermint tea fan, as just the thought of normal tea made me heave.

As much as I hated the idea of eating, I nearly always felt better for eating something. I mostly stuck to very bland food like rich tea biscuits, apples, grapes, and for 8 weeks I lived on small bowls of pasta with grated cheese over them!

PoinsettiaBouquets · 01/01/2008 17:49

Hi Deborah, I'm nearly 8wks pg! I downloaded a subliminal anti-morning sickness track off Ebay and I swear it's working! Was only about £5 so worth a punt if you're desperate (as I was, am down to nausea not vomiting now.)

You also have to keep your blood sugar levels up which means fairly constant carb intake. It's about finding ways of getting sugar in - fruit tea with sugar, hot Ribena with honey or other sugary hi-juice squash, Haribo jelly sweets, Thornton's toffee, flat Sprite and ginger ale (make sure it has sugar not sweetners.) I found hot buttered toast manageable too. But get something in you every couple of hours.

PoinsettiaBouquets · 01/01/2008 17:52

Also, drink a sacrificial glass of water first thing in the morning to throw up. Then a glass of squash - that way if anything stays down it is at least going to help your blood sugar levels.

Dragonhart · 01/01/2008 18:57

Another here giving you sympathy! I had terrible all day sickness with both mine and now starting to get it for the third.

I know it sounds silly but I found half way through my sicknes with dd that if I took my folic acid tablet just before bed time instead of in the morning ike I had been, it was a lot better. Not perfect but a great improvment.

Also, with DD I had no choice but to keep going as I was looking after ds who was 8-11months old at the time so I was forcing myself to eat and it did help. Even if all you are eating is frazzles, salt and vinegar discos and chicken supernoodles (all I could stomach at the time!) anything that you can eat helps, even though you are feeling sick.

Hope it gets better soon xxxxxxxxx

mylittlepudding · 01/01/2008 19:05

It is horrible. Are you drinking? How much weight have you lost?

Babies are like parasites - yes really - you just need to have whatever sounds good to get you through this. If you have not kept anything down for 24 hours or you lose more than 5% of your body weight, you really need to see your doctor.

I hope it ends for you soon.

RUMPEL · 01/01/2008 19:45

Deborah _ I find being on the PC makes it worse! as does heat. I never drink fizzy drinks but when pg the only thing I can stomach until about 11am is diet coke! I usually drink gallons of water but can't face it until eveing time when pg. I keep Ritz crackers by the bed, as soemthing salty helps. Melon is good too. Last 2 pg I craved carbs and sweet things, this time protein protein protein - must be a blue one. REST defo helps, you could try the sea sickness bands = I have 2 sets, 1 for washing, 1 for wearing.
try to eat little and often if you can - as already said.

Your body is weird when pg though - I cannot stomach ginger at all and usually love it.

Hugs to you xxx

Hi
I had bad sickness after getting off lightly in this pregnancy, but I was getting the cold sweats and could hardly move was very weak, I had a UTI it might be worth getting it checked, have you had booking in appointment yet? might be an idea to ask MW to check you wee just incase, otherwise, salty fizzy and dry work well. Hope it passes soon

dizzydixies · 01/01/2008 22:55

Hi
am sorry to hear you're feeling so rough, I could only manage lucozade and beans on toast with my first dd! the midwife stated not to worry what it was I was keeping down as long as it was something!
have you tried travel bands? you can get them in boots/superdrug etc they're meant to help with travel sickness but in a strange way they worked
hope you feel better soon
x

deborah36 · 02/01/2008 09:02

Thanks soooooooo much to all of you who have replied! What wonderful support and advice! I shall definitely be trying some of your suggestions. Have the travel bands on and have listened to a subliminal tape for morning sickness! Might be helping slightly!

Hugs to all of you who are also suffering! We'll get through it soon!

Hi, me again!

Just looked at website recommended by Peachyhasafiggypuddingintheoven. Thanks Peachy, it's really interesting with lots of self-help tips. It has also prompted me to contact my homeopath to see if she can help me out. Thanks again!

urgh, I know how you are feeling! I cannot eat anything, only bites here and there hoping it's enough. It's been like that about 3 weeks now, and now the vomiting has started Ginger ale and crackers were a god send the first few weeks, now it's whatever I think I can stomach - however crappy, it's better than nothing. {{hugs}} hope you feel better soon x

I am so paranoid about being unwell. I have morning sickness I think but without the sickness and am hot in the evenings and can’t eat much. Is that normal? I called 111 and they have decided it may be COVID (which seems to be the answer to everything these days without properly examining you)

Sunshinedahlia · 21/10/2020 23:14

I sniffed lemon slices and sucked sugar free worthers originals so I could get to sleep at night. Apart from that, I went to a small supermarket and looked at everything til I found sth I could imagine eating and then bought that. Eg. Rice crispies. Don‘t worry if it doesn‘t fade away exactly after 12-14 weeks, it might slowly disappear but will slowly get better!
