Hyperosmia/smell sensitivity pregnancy

Hello, I'm wondering if anyone has any advice or gone through something similar. I'm also 20 weeks pregnant and experienced severe smell sensitivity throughout my pregnancy so far. It has come to a point where I've had to temporarily leave home because the smell of paint (we unfortunately painted our house about 2 weeks before symptoms kicked in) makes me vomit so much. I had really hoped it would fade by the end of the first trimester but no such luck. It would be great to know if anyone made a full recovery from this after birth, particularly if you suffered from it all the way through your pregnancy. Thanks so much for any encouragement!

Yes me! I had hyperemesis and hair trigger sense of smell up to 30 weeks. Normal again after the birthbut it took me ten years to be able to like ginger or peppermint again.

I also hated coffee and bananas but I really like them in non pregnant times and went straight back to eating them after I gave birth

You have my Sympathies. I had this with both pregnancies and no one could understand how awful it was. Is be invited to someone’s house for lunch with promises of ‘lots of nice smells’ but to me there were NO nice smells. None at all. My DH got me a swimmer’s nose clip so that I could be in the same room as him! 😂 it was awful, the worst point being when I was boiling the kettle and even the smell of the hot water made me ill. But both times my smell was back to normal almost immediately after I’d given birth. I remember sitting on the ward that evening thinking that the hospital food cart smelled amazing.

I hope it does pass for you soon OP.

I was exactly the same, although still associate peppermint with feeling sick! OP my sense of smell in 2nd pg was literally so good i could tell my dd1 needed a nappy change from downstairs with the door closed to her bedroom. I immediately felt so much better after birth

..(& yes nappy changes were as dreadful as you'd expect). I did find that for the worst smells i could breathe in through my mouth & it helped me cope. Also i found having certain essential oils on a tissue in my pocket allowed me to hold it over my nose when i needed to drown out a bad smell. Lemon & grapefruit oils were quite good!
My sympathies too OP, it will go at least after the baby's born, hopefully sooner Smile

Thank you so much, I'm definitely feel encouraged by these messages and anecdotes. It's hard to imagine my nose will ever go back to normal but I'm going to try my best to think positively!
