Hair coloring during pregnancy

Any tips on safe ways to get this done? My doc says to wait til 2nd trimester but I'm desperate to cover the greys!

Any way you do it is safe. Do a patch test first. Pregnancy can change the way colour takes to the hair sometimes so be aware of that.

Why don't you just use root spray to cover your greys until it's safer in second trimester? I waited until after 20 weeks to get mine done..

I've done it with both my pregnancies, I've ensured the bathroom has the window open and not done it perhaps as often as I'd like

It actually doesn't hold as well which is due to your hormones or something but is better than nothing in my opinion!!

I had my colour done (semi perm and highlights) throughout pregnancy (including first trimester) and my now almost two year old doesn't seem to have suffered any adverse effects. (I also drank a lot of wine before realising I was pregnant and she's fine - thankfully!) Purely anecdotal evidence of course...

There are some temporary (less chemicals) dyes that wash out quite quickly. I saw them in Superdrug a while ago. Not sure if they'd cover greys though.

If you're concerned and have only a few greys you could try hair crayons on your roots until your second trimester. There is one called "cover my gray" on Amazon that I use occasionally between salon visits.

Thank you - will look that up!

Hi! I'm in my first trimester and high risk. My natural hair color is brown but I get it done in bright bright colors every 8 weeks. I say this so that you'll know that the process includes bleaching my roots and then applying a semi-permanent color after that (right now it's blue). It looks AWFUL if I let my roots grow in too much, so it one of the first questions I asked my previous OBGYN last year when I was beginning to get serious about conception. I wanted to know so that I would have time to transition to natural hair color if I couldn't keep doing what I usually do. She said I would be absolutely fine to continue to get it done in the way that I have.
I have since changed doctors. Now that I'm pregnant (7w5d), I asked my new doctor her opinion, as my regularly scheduled hair appt was coming up (had it last week). She told me it was absolutely fine as well. I even walked her through what I get done, made sure she understood that I get my roots bleached, and even confirmed that she knew I meant getting it done that week and not waiting for the second trimester. She still said it was totally fine. The only thing she said was to make sure I wore a mask and to get it done in a well ventilated room Smile
So there you go, two OBGYNs gave me their blessing knowing I required a double-process and that I'm high risk. Hope that helps!

I’ve switched from getting hair coloured to doing it at home with Naturtint. It’s 97% plant based and without most (not all) of the common nasties. It’s permanent and holds well. I waited until 15 weeks to dye it and am now 24 weeks, I’ll do one more around 28 weeks and that will have to last me. Hate seeing the greys but not worth the risk in my view!

I had mine coloured when I was about 8/9 weeks my midwife said it was fine just that pregnancy hormones sometimes change the way the die takes but mine was all fine

I did a fair bit of reading about this and reluctantly decided I should avoid having it done in the first trimester. I remember feeling very self conscious at a big family party, when the pregnancy was still a secret and my roots looked dreadful.

However, there was a thought I kept returning to that was a sweet little comfort to me. I calculated that the foetuses (I was having twins) were growing at roughly the same rate as my hair, so the length of my grey roots roughly corresponded to their size.

It felt great when I reached the second trimester and had my hair sorted out though. My hairdresser recommended I have a skin test 24 hours beforehand, just to check the pregnancy hadn't made me sensitive to the dye.

Good luck.

I didn’t even know this was a thing until after my baby was born! There was a point in the first trimester where I just felt like anything I wanted was banned so I’m glad I didn’t know about this too 😂 My baby is just fine!

username48582 · 11/02/2022 09:53

I agree with maybe trying the sprays that cover your roots first?
Having said that I had my hair dyed before I realised (I was about4/5 weeks pregnant). All was fine.
Also I suppose they wear gloves but loads of the hairdressers at my salon are currently pregnant. They must still be inhaling it/getting bits of it on them.

dementedpixie · 11/02/2022 11:23

Nhs says you might wish to avoid it in the 1st trimester but doesn't say its dangerous to colour it during that period

CurryandSnuggle · 11/02/2022 12:09

I’d personally avoid it in first trimester as the chemicals in certain things can cause heart defects, in fairness nhs only says this about e.g nail polish, paint, glue but not much is known about the impact of hair dye. Please see: www.nhs.uk/conditions/congenital-heart-disease/causes/ (organic solvents). It’s probably best to be cautious though.

Cakecakecheese · 11/02/2022 12:56

I was told not to have my usual done, which is a crapload of bleach on my scalp for up to an hour but that non scalp dying was fine so my hairdresser has come up with a plan.
