Piles in pregnancy

Hi everyone. I'm nearly 36 weeks pregnant and have been suffering badly from piles for months now and they are getting progressively worse. Anusol cream hasn't worked in the slightest and the doctor doesn't want to give me anything else as they've said they would contain steroids. I'm in so much discomfort and pain and used to look forward to the birth but now the closer I get to it the more worried and freaked out I'm getting that the piles are going to worsen. I feel like I'm about to have an anal prolapse or something! Has anyone else been in this situation?

No solution but offering solidarity. Is it itchy? I've got piles now and it's so horrible isn't it :(

Flangeosaurus · 09/02/2022 22:27

I used the germoloids cream and suppositories. You have my sympathies they are horrendous. The other thing you can do is in the shower to gently push them back in. Use the cream religiously 4 times a day as well.

Thanks girls, feel like I'm going mad, the itch is unbearable, 24/7. I've been using the 3 way anusol cream on and off since the end of November but honestly it's absolutely useless for me. I've also tried germoloids, coconut oil, sudocrem, all the same, useless! Might see if I can get witch hazel as I've read that can take the itch away at least. Honestly at the end of my tether!

I had piles in my first pregnancy and have been left with a largish skin tag. They're not too bad this time but I'm seriously considering asking about surgical options at my 6 week appointment. 😭

Teaforme123 · 10/02/2022 11:01

Have you tried the suppositories? They are much better than just the cream and usually work instantly. Have you had them examined by the doc? If super bad they may need removing after the baby is born.

McHelenz, I think part of the problem is maybe skin tags that keep getting inflamed, from what I can gather from Google anyway. But there must still be blood flowing to them as they are quite sore and tender to touch. My midwife is also useless and I don't trust her in the slightest which makes being honest about how I'm feeling so much worse! I'm seeing her again next week and might mention it but she fobs me off all the time, that's if she gets back to me at all!
Teaforme123, no I haven't tried the suppositories, I'm thinking mine are more external than internal though, do you think suppositories would help if that's the case? My doctor hasn't actually examined them, trying to get passed the security that is the receptionist is a joke! In November the receptionist just put a note through the doctor and I was then just prescribed anusol without speaking to a GP. Then the other day I spoke to the receptionist again and she arranged for the prescription nurse to phone me the next day and she just prescribed lactulose and said they wouldn't give me anything stronger for the piles at the moment. I've convinced myself that they will need to be removed surgically after the birth, but I'm still so worried about how much worse they will be after pushing the baby out! Doesn't help that I'm quite shy anyway and the anxiety of showing them to the midwife is stressing me out!

I was given scheriproct ointment and suppositories for piles during pregnancy, helped much more than anything over the counter. Ask for these by name from your GP and they should be able to prescribe them no problem

GaslighterDenier · 10/02/2022 11:27

And the suppositories helped even though I thought mine were just external. They provided relief and made it easier to pass a stool which meant that the external ones didn't get more irritated than they already were.

Teaforme123 · 10/02/2022 11:27

Worriedmummy I really wouldn't worry about showing the midwife, they have honestly seen everything before. (I know it's easier said than done though) but please don't worry. I'm sure once you have given birth you won't think twice about them looking!🤣
Also, mine got better after I'd given birth, so hopefully it's just the pressure of the baby making them worse. I would try the suppositories. I use them and the cream together just for extra help and they do work for me. Good luck!

QueenLagertha · 10/02/2022 11:39

Bless you OP they are a torture. I've had trouble over the past few weeks ( I'm 29 weeks) though they are still internal. Was using the germoloid suppositories. They seem to have settled over the past few days. Though one hard BM and I know they'll
be back 🤦🏼‍♀️
Def keep on at GP. As others have said they can prescribe other cream/suppositories.
For me the best way to manage them has been putting my feet on a stool when going to the toilet and trying not to push or strain, drinking lots of water and eating lots of fruit and veg.

Thanks everyone, it is reassuring to know I'm not alone in this nightmare! I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy! The only thing that helps is a nice warm bath but I can't stay in there for the next 5 weeks before the birth! I'll try my doctor again next week if this recent week of anusol and lactulose doesn't help. I'm not expecting miracles but if the itch and tenderness can be controlled I'll be slightly happier.
