Am nearly 7 weeks pg. Just been to the loo and have found a 50p piece size patch of fresh red blood in pants and blood and fibrous blood bits (sorry to be so graphic!) on tissue. Am totally scared that this is something bad........I am fully aware that this could mean the start of miscarriage.......but am looking for some reassurance that it can also be quite normal and not necessarily a sign of something bad. Haven't had any cramps, just feel a bit 'periody' as have done for past few weeks on and off. Has anyone else experienced this? Did you progress with the pregnancy OK? Am meant to be going out for a meal to celebrate new year tonight, but just don't feel like going now - although it won't be a strenuous night....dh says, carry on as normal. .x.

Give your midwife a call so prehaps she could reassure you over the phone!
Sorry not much help but (((hugs))).

scrummymummy1965 · 31/12/2007 16:57

I had this with first DS and had a normal pregnancy, although I did have an appointment with Dr who sent me for an internal scan just to be safe (it happened twice). Hospital did advise rest from work for a couple of weeks. They did say that bleeding in pregnancy is very common.

I am sure everything will be ok for you but perhaps to put your mind at rest, ring NHS line or maybe the on call doctor for some reassurance?

Sending you hugs - get dh to ring while you put your feet up.

it is really not uncommon to have breakthrough bleeding at this time .. it's called an implantation bleed (as the foetus implants further) .. it can be red or brown blood .. the 'fibrous' bits could be standard cervical fluid

but call midwife and try to arrange an EPU scan (be warned these are internals)

I had early bleeding with my dd2 and although it is very scary everything was fine. I lost a sort of clot about the size of a 50p piece at one point and when they did my scans there was a 'dark' patch on my placenta that sort of size.... Rest up, but think about going out as it may be good to have a bit of a distraction. Early bleeding is a lot more common than you might think. Good Luck.

mammabelleboo · 01/01/2008 14:11

Thank you all for your reassuring messages. Bleeding stopped by this morning, got lighter as the evening progressed.....so am a bit more relaxed now! Did go out as planned and had a nice evening......so, fingers crossed and all that!! Thanks again to you all & happy new year!! x.

I had bleeding early on and assumed the worst - we still don't know why - but five weeks on things are still fine. Sometimes a twin is lost early on and that can cause bleeding but the singleton pregnancy hangs on in there.

But you do need a scan!

colander · 01/01/2008 15:20

I had early bleeding with DD1, and again at 22 and 24 weeks. Born healthy at 41 weeks, now 5 yo. Wishing you all the best, but please get checked out to be sure all is ok.

glitterbird · 01/01/2008 17:28

I had early bleeding at 6 weeks and my dr sent me for a scan at 6 weeks and a follow up at 8 weeks and they said it was most likely to be implantation bleeding. I am now at 16 weeks and still experiencing very slight bleeding every few days so went for another scan 2 days ago and although they could not explain what the bleeding was from (possibly cervix) baby was still fine. I am still slightly paranoid but trying to put into perspective that its quite common, its just another one of those things you only find out about once you are pg. So get a scan to put your mind at rest. it may not necessarily be an internal exam my sonographer was able to see something and hear a heartbeat at 6 weeks when it was only 3mm long.

Happy New Year and best wishes

Shelli08 · 03/01/2008 12:18

hi mammabaloo, i know what your going through

I am supposed to be around 8 weeks pregnant according to my period dates. 4 days ago i started to bleed so i went to the hospital and they did an internal examination, didn't tell me much they just said i would have to go back the next day for a scan. i went back the next day and all is the scan showed was the pregnancy sac or amniotic sac, the nurse couldnt see the baby but she didnt say id lost it and didnt say anything was there, i am so confused, i then had some blood taken to check my hcg levels which were 17000 and if they drop within 48 hours when they test again, its a sign of miscarriage i am so upset we have been trying for 6 months and we were delighted with the news but now we are so frustrated because no one is telling us anything. has anyone experienced anything similar? x

lucykate · 03/01/2008 12:21

as others have posted, bleeding is very common whilst pg. it can mean bad things are happening but it can also come to nothing, i bled off and on until 23 weeks with dd

ChinaSurprise · 03/01/2008 12:46

Hi there

I also had this at around the same time. Of course, it could be bad news, but the timing provides some explanation. You've already missed one period. Around the time you should have your second (ie now) you body may have a small reaction and kick out a bit of blood.
I had exactly the same thing happen - bright red blood clot - I even went into the mat ward to be examined at 11 o clock at night! Am now sitting here at 17+2 with a proper bump, and a wriggling in my tummy!

I wish you lots of luck and love

Hi,
sorry to hijack, but i am going through something similar. I am 9 weeks pg with DC2, and have had brownish/reddish discharge for last few days. My GP has referred me to the EPU, and I am seeing them tomorrow. However, when i spoke to nurse earlier, she said i would have to have an internal. Now, I've heard that internals are not only painful, but also could be potentially harmful - does anyone have any experience of this? Also, could you please tell me exactly what an internal involves? Sorry, am already worried about bleeding, now am worried about internal too!

Thanks

Sam

imopop · 03/01/2008 13:37

Sam
They can see if there is bleeding via an internal, but it will not tell you much. the best course of action is a scan which can be done internally for a better view of whats going on. Let us know what happens and best of luckxx

SamAz · 03/01/2008 14:48

thanks so much - i am particularly worried as my sister had an internal with her ds2 and then had all kinds of complications, which she was convinced was down to the internal. I am getting period like pains as well, which doesn't help, and is really disturbing for me as i had no symptoms with my ds1. I know every pg is different, but you can't help worrying!

mammabelleboo · 03/01/2008 16:14

Hi all. Thanks for your comments - they have been quite reassuring. SamAz - really hope all is Ok for you - keeping everything crossed!

I had a bit of bleeding as per my first posts, but that stopped and nothing since.......until today, a little bit earlier on, I mean the littlest smears on my loo paper, now nothing. Have not contacted GP or anyone as I don't feel the bleeding has been significant enough - ie not clots or lots of blood, no bad cramps or anything. So am biding my time - if it does continue on and off over the next few days, will seek some advice.

I must admit, I have been thinking rationally about it and have decided what will be will be. To lose a pg is the body's natural way of dealing with something that isn't meant to be - no-one can stop that - if it's going to happen, it will ....but for now am just going to get on with it & see what progresses. x.

I had an internal at 24 weeks with DD1 due to bleeding (mentioned earlier) and yes, it was pretty uncomfortable - similar to a smear test I would say. Hadn't heard about problems with them, but this is over 5 years ago now. However, it was reassuring to hear my cervix was still closed. HTH

ChinaSurprise · 04/01/2008 10:07

An internal scan is about as uncomfortable as a smear test - I really wouldn't worry. I've had two so far as my womb was tilted until 14 weeks which made it impossible to do scan via tum til then.
It didn't hurt, just a little discomfort, and the nurse was really nice.
I had slight bleeding before my first internal u/s scan at EPU (8+2). The night after my scan the "rest" of the blood came out (about a 20p piece worth in a clot), which is what sent me scurrying for hospital.
I had an internal exam (again, like a smear really) and doc said my cervix was closed and she was "hopeful". That was 10 weeks ago and all has been well since.
Don't give up hope. It's really normal around 7 to 9 weeks to get a small bleed due to your body having its second missed period.
It's also totally normal to have a slight bleeding reaction to the implantation, which sometimes comes out straight away and sometimes comes out later.
Obviously no one can be sure whether you will be fine or not, but try to be positive.
Also, on the period like pains, this is also totally normal and may just be due to your womb growing. Virtually everyone in my antenatal club seems to have had this at some point.
I'll be rooting for you both.

China.

sweetkitty · 04/01/2008 10:19

I had two bad bleeds with DD1 at 9 and 10 weeks (TMI but red blood splattering the toilet bowls type of thing) - she was fine

DC3 - had a tiny amount of brown spotting at 8 weeks, had scan and baby had died at 6 weeks, mc'ed at 10 weeks

DC4 - had red and brown bleeding at 10 weeks, am now 13 weeks and all is fine.

So I guess what I am saying is there is no sset pattern to these things. I know it's easy to say if it's not meant to be it's not meant to be and it's natures way but it's not that simple when you are stressed out with worry that you are losing your baby.

My advice is go get your scan find out one way or anther for sure, best of luck x

mammabelleboo · 13/01/2008 11:50

Hi all, in case anyone's interested, thought I'd update you on my situation. All is well and little one is fine. Had further scary scary bleeding last week, so GP arranged early scan - & there was a little blip on the screen with a little heart beat . Am taking it easy, but all is well, so far. Am a little concerned at picking up this D&V bug that's doing the rounds, so am feeling a bit vulnerable still, but hope baby will be OK. Thanks to all for your support. x.

Hi mammabelleboo,

I'm so glad to hear everything is ok, I've been a mumsnet lurker for months but wanted to post now, I really know how frightening seeing and feeling the bleeding is!

I was on holiday in France when I was 7weeks pg and I bled. HEAVILY. I had an internal scan there and, like you, I saw the little bean with a heartbeat. I was told I had a big heamatoma behind the sac (probably from implantation bleeding).

Well, after the heamatoma, I had 2 more big bleeds, one of them was so heavy, not only was I certain I had miscarried, I was thinking I was bleeding out!

To cut a long story short, I bled pretty much for a whole month until the end of the first trimester and had 5 internal scans. The amount of blood in total was shocking really, but the bean kept growing seemingly oblivious!

Said bean is now a 4.5month old utterly healthy bouncing baby girl!

Any bleeding needs to be checked out and its an excrutiating(sp) waiting game to see if everything will be OK, but lots of happy endings!

Hmmm, didn't quite manage to cut the long story short did I?!

midnightstar · 13/01/2008 17:42

hiya all hope your all ok i had bad bleeds at 6 8 and 13 weeks the blood was bright red and i can only describe it as gushing out of me scans revealed my baba there with heartbeat everytime and im at 28+3 now and a bruised placenta so i may have to be indued early incase the placenta stops working or abruption occurs i was possitive i had misscarried when i bled as i couldnt imagine him holding on in there after all the blood so the moral of the story is even very bad bleeds can still progress into a normal pregnancy good luck to u all
