Pushchairs for toddlers & newborns

When my latest is born (in May08) I will have the newborn and a 3years2months old toddler. I won't need a double buggy, will I? People keep saying that my eldest will still need to ride in the buggy sometimes, but she demands to walk most of the time now anyway and only really uses the buggy when we are out shopping and we insist she has a nap.
I won't be walking to the shops or anything normal like that (nearest 5 miles away), so will only be using the buggy when actually in town shopping or dragging the kids down to the stables. Was thinking of just getting a buggy-board for on the back just in case the eldest does get tired of walking.

I only have a 15 month gap between my ds and dd, and only ever had one buggy, and occasionally used the buggy board. Worked fine for me!

CarGirl · 31/12/2007 16:30

with a 3 year gap you will be fine with just a buggyboard

137wallis · 31/12/2007 16:35

I second the buggy board but have also discovered babywearing with ds5 and ds4 is 2.5 so I take either the buggy with board if its a quick trip or buggy and sling into town for longer trips and just swap them about ie when ds4 needs a rest I put ds5 in the sling and ds4 gets a ride or I carry ds4 on my back and have ds5 in the buggy, this works better for us than the buggy board as ds5 doesn't really like the buggy and screams after around an hour!

im only having a single with my new baby and dd2 is only going to be 23 mths when shes born. she walks practically everywhere anyway and ill have a board just in case.

There was 3 yrs and 3 months between my 1st and 2nd child. 1st didn't really want to go in the buggy much anymore when 2nd child came along. Got a buggy board and this worked fine. She quite liked sitting on the board for a wee rest when she needed one. Only thing was she was a bit jealous at first as I had always taken buggy round the shops etc even though she generally walked and didn't use it. All of a sudden new baby appeared and she had no choice, she wasn't to get using the buggy anymore as it wasn't available to her. She took strops for first couple of weeks but after that was fine.
I would recommend the buggy board for the age gap you will have.

Please can I jump in here for some advice? My DD will be 20 months when next baby born in Feb (by c-section). Will she be ok on a buggy board? She doesn't like walking very far at the moment so I can't see her improving in 7 weeks!
Problem is I have arthritis and have been told to expect a flare up following the birth so a sling or carrying DD1 or baby will be out of the question.
I have been looking at the Phil & Teds pram but I love my Bugaboo and really don't want to get rid of it. I know a lot of people hate Bugaboos but it was the only pram I could push/steer and it will take a certain amount of my weight on it. Any advice?

pinkyminky · 01/01/2008 23:14

HiBluedomino
I had sections with both mine.
Just under 17 months between them and I love my phil&teds, still useful now (14 months on) for long pram walks or walks back from days out.(Folding the p&t and lifting into car is a heavy job, and I always left that to my husband in the early days)
I have to say I did keep my bugaboo frog until d2 outgrew the carrycot as I used it for daytime sleeping and a less bulky pram for use with the car seat.
I wasn't sure which I would end up keeping, but my son likes to walk, unless we have a very long way to go, or I'm in a hurry for an appointment or if he is tired, in which case he was much happier in a seat than on the wheeled board, so I kept the phil and teds.

Friends who have just had second children with their eldest around 2 1/2 seem to cope well with boards(but their older children are in nursery for half the day).
After a section, going up and down kerbs with the wheeled board can be very awkward during recovery.
A pram you can push with one hand is very useful if you have a toddler walking with you.I bought a second hand micralite after selling the frog and it is really good for this.
I think you need something to easily carry two- you don't want to be struggling with a crying baby and a toddler that is demanding to be carried, and I find the p&t really easy to push.
bit rambly but hope it's of use.

bluedomino · 03/01/2008 23:33

Thanks pinkyminky, that helps a lot. I think she is too small for a Buggyboard yet (very underweight) and it will be so cold in Feb, she loves, and I mean loves her Bugaboo especially with the footmuff, and sleeps in it every day. Shes not in nursery due to allergies, so shes with me all day.
Just got to find a way of paying for a Phil and Teds now, they are still expensive on ebay. Apparently, the new type recline more too.

pinkyminky · 04/01/2008 20:34

Glad it helps. I have both mine at home, too, and it makes a big difference as you have to do every errand etc. with them.
I know they are expensive, but on the up-side, you will get good money for both prams when you come to sell them on.
V2 fine for my little one, you will have to judge for yourself if the bit of recline on the back seat is worth the extra money.

Gemy · 04/01/2008 20:48

Another vote for the phil and teds - we have 20 months between DD1 and DD2. Already had the P&T anyway and were not planning on any more children. However, DD2 arrived but it was easy enough to buy the doubles kit and a caccoon (which your newborn can sleep in in the buggy and also at home. DD2 sleeps in hers all the time - it is so warm and snuggly)

Pinky has a good point though, you can sell on your P&T afterwards, or even sell the doubles kit once your eldest child is totally buggy free, and then sell on the buggy at a later date.

Our E3 does fully recline to be totally lie-flat. I think the new one is called the Sport but not sure how much more it can recline?!!

pinkyminky · 04/01/2008 21:19

It's the doubles kit seat that now reclines a bit, too; it now has a zip out recline for when it's in the rear seat position, when they have outgrown the cocoon and 'sling seat' phase. I didn't think it was all that significant an improvement in itself, but those with the sport may have other opinions.

JingleyJen · 04/01/2008 21:20

we had a 2.5 year gap and a buggy board. worked a dream

sweetkitty · 04/01/2008 21:28

I will have a 2.6yo gap between DD2 and DB3 and am getting a P&T mainly because DD2 looks like being a runner like DD1 was at that age, DD1 couldn't be trusted to walk nice beside the pram until well past 3. I like the fact the P&T can go between single and double. I just think that I will need DD2 to be contained for a while yet if I am on my own with DD1 (4) as well.

Trying to presuade DP I need a P&T though, good resale value is one of the plus points.

bluedomino · 04/01/2008 22:13

So, with the P&Ts you put the baby in a cocoon thing until what age? And is it worth buying the proper P&Ts footmuff? Whats the sling seat? And will it fit in the back of my Polo (parcel shelf out)but think I'm going to have to get a slightly bigger car or at least one with 4 doors, its not a good look trying to put baby in car seat with your bottom sticking out into the road.

I worry the DD won't like not looking at me, she used to be a nightmare on trips out until I faced towards me.

Thanks for the advice.

Washersaurus · 04/01/2008 22:26

I have the sport version and love it. We used the cocoon up until DS2 was about 3.5mths old, then I put him straight into the reclining 2nd seat which I made all snuggly for him with a Kaiser footmuff (these are the best IMO) I believe the P&T ones don't last as long due to length/width)

I have managed to fit it into the back of my sister's old Ford Fiesta without parcel shelf.

Washersaurus · 04/01/2008 22:27

The sling seat is just the main seat layed flat in the newborn position.

pinkyminky · 04/01/2008 23:56

I kept my dd in the cocoon til she was about 5 months. I use a p&t footmuff on the extra seat and a buggysnuggle on the main seat. It's tru the P&t footmuff isn't that big, but my daughter will fit it 'til she's at least 2, I think. MY ds is much bigger (91st centile) so the buggysnuggle better for him. P&T made a great sleeping bag for DD when camping last year!

SazzaK · 09/01/2008 21:47

The new P&Ts is the Vibe, for a pic look here, it is a bit lighter and more Quinny-esque. Hard to pin anyone down on a release date though - Feb looks likely but maybe worth waiting for.

ernest · 10/01/2008 07:56

the new p&t looks fab says ordernow for March delivery on that link.

I will now just have to put it out of my mind and suffer from extreme pushchair envy, and make do with the great great grandfather P&T which is probably over 7 years old. Still a great pushchair tho and works as good as new, just doesn't look as modern or have fancy new fangled features like bumper bars, reclining seats, mud guards, cocoons..............
