Just shifted to the UK from India. I am a month pregnant and I can see that the way healthcare works here is pretty different. Can anyone give me a rundown, please?

Are you registered with a Doctor? If not, that's the first thing that you need to do, they should be able to advise whether you self refer to local midwife services or whether they refer you. Once registered and referred to a Midwife you'll have a booking in appointment between 8 and 12 weeks where they will go through your medical history, family history, and usually take bloods.

You are then booked in for your first scan between 12 and 14 weeks.

16 week midwife appointment to go through bloods and in some areas Listen to the heartbeat, although not many areas do as it's so early. You then have a 20 week anomaly scan, followed by regular midwife appointments if it's your first, a few less if it's a subsequent pregnancy.

You can be switched to consultant care if you have any high risk factors, and these appointments will happen in between the midwife appointments.

Congratulations, ask away anything specific. You have had good advice above.

Something to keep in mind is that you won’t be seen by the NHS as routine until you are at least 8 weeks. It can be as late as 10 in some trusts. You will have a booking appointment with a midwife who will do routine blood tests and some paperwork. You will be booked into for a scan at 12 weeks.

Once your pregnancy is confirmed as present and viable at the 12 week scan, you will get more appointments and scans booked more regularly.

If you want any scans or check ups prior to 12 weeks- you can go private fairly easily. Ultrasound appointments are available readily if you google and usually cost between £50-80. Many women have an ‘early reassurance’ scan to check the pregnancy has implanted and is in line with dates.

This is the NHS timeline.
Are you registered with a GP? That needs to be your first step.
