No movements at 18 weeks??

Hello all,

I am currently 18 weeks pregnant and I haven't felt my first proper kick. I know people have felt their first movements between 16-20 weeks and for first time mums (like me) it can be up to 24 weeks before you feel something. But I'm so concerned.

I think I felt those early movements a couple of times since 16 weeks, like the tickling (eyelash against skin), slight twinges where the baby is and the gas bubbles but I haven't felt anything like that in so many days and tbh I'm not even sure if that was the baby...

I'm planning to call my midwife tomorrow just incase even though she will probably tell me to just wait since it's my first baby and it can take a few more weeks to feel proper movement 😕. I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance, did anyone else feel their first proper movements after 18 weeks??

18 weeks is very early days. They’ll even tell you this at your 20 week scan. I only felt my first move regularly around 24 weeks and my second around 26 weeks. Everyone is different

Mamma2babiez · 06/02/2022 18:39

Definitely speak with your midwife if you’re concerned and they’ll be able to give you the best advice for you.

Hopefully that will help with any concerns you have. Good luck.

Oh wow that's really reassuring. Thanks!

Didn't feel anything till 22 weeks with my first! Don't stress OP Thanks

SweetPeaGirl · 06/02/2022 19:11

I didn't feel anything at all until 19+5, and it's only now at 26 weeks that there's a fairly regular pattern. This is my first baby too.

It can depend on a lot of things like where your placenta is, which way baby is facing, and if you're focused on other stuff you may not notice.

KnottyKnitting · 06/02/2022 19:15

With my first I didn't feel anything until around 22 weeks.

Felt it a bit earlier with DD2 but at 18 weeks I wouldn't be worried at 18 weeks- that seems pretty early for a first baby.

astroboy45 · 06/02/2022 19:16

As long as everything is okay at your scans and baby is healthy, try not to worry. Baby will move around regularly at their own time.
Make sure you stay off of Google too haha!

ButFirstTea · 06/02/2022 23:56

Also didn't feel my first proper kick until after 20 weeks, and nothing regular until 24 weeks or later. Don't panic, it's still really early for you to feel anything at all!

Kgutdfn · 07/02/2022 07:04

It sounds like you may have an anterior placenta which makes kicks harder to feel. I had one and didn't feel a lot of movement all the way through.

LH1987 · 07/02/2022 07:14

I felt my first movement at 22 weeks. I was really worried. I remember at my 20 week scan my DD landed a kick straight into the front of my stomach and the sonographer looked at me, as she assumed I MUST have felt that, I felt nothing!

DappledOliveGroves · 07/02/2022 10:24

I didn't really feel anything consistent until around 20 weeks with this pregnancy - I have an anterior placenta which cushioned a lot of it. Felt movements much earlier with my first pregnancy. I'd speak to your midwife to put your mind at rest but try not to worry.

HeyDuggeesFavouriteSquirrel · 07/02/2022 10:27

I was 24 weeks and even then it was only very faint.

Sleepy86 · 07/02/2022 10:58

I had an anterior placenta with my first and felt kicks for the first time at 21 weeks, although that was only because I was laid on my tummy for a few moments (no bump at that point), it was another couple of weeks before I started feeling them properly.

I'm now 9 weeks with my second and can't wait to start feeling movements! Hoping for a posterior placenta this time so I get to feel more this time round!

Goldi321 · 08/02/2022 11:08

Gone 20 weeks here until I felt baby movements. It’s perfectly normal x

rose88xx · 09/02/2022 11:09

Hey @mypurple did you speak to your midwife? I’m exactly the same, 18+1 and started to feel flutters and twinges regularly last week but haven’t felt them for a few days now which is making me anxious! I called the midwife this morning and she just kept repeating ‘you won’t feel movement until 24 weeks’ but said if I was concerned I should go in! So I don’t know what to do.

Xx

Hey, so since posting I've started feeling early movements again (still no definitive kick), now it sort of feels like a rumble in my lower tummy and it's a lot more constant like day and night.

I would say don't worry because for a good while I also felt nothing at all (like up to 3-5 days consecutively) and now I'm feeling something constantly. I guess at this stage we don't feel every movement and like the others are saying we could just have an anterior placenta. It does get your mind thinking when people have felt their first kick by now but I'm trying to be positive, can't wait for my scan next week!

First baby I felt at 19 weeks and second at 24 weeks. It was placenta position and being a bit overweight. You don't need to worry yet

PT1708 · 12/02/2022 00:48

Hey lovely!

I just wanted to give you some reassurance, I’m currently 35+2 and I didn’t feel our baby boy move until 25 weeks. Just play close attention to him as the weeks go by, ice cold drinks, fizzy drinks and sugary sweets. I hope this eases your mind lovely! I was going out of mind ♥️

Daydreamsinsantafe · 12/02/2022 01:06

In all my pregnancies I can feel movement very early on. Especially after sneezing from about 11/12 wks then all goes quiet a couple of weeks later until much further on.
I couldn’t feel twins properly until 25 weeks. In my experience there’s one day when you feel a solid kick & then it becomes regular thereafter.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

HW1989 · 12/02/2022 04:38

Besides the very faint fluttery movements you mentioned I didn’t feel proper movement until 20 weeks. And even then it was so up and down until two weeks ago, baby would have super active days then really quiet days. Went for a private scan when on holiday at 28 weeks as I hadn’t felt anything for days, all was fine and bub was moving around, had just changed positions and I couldn’t feel it. Now I’m 33 weeks and it’s only now that baby is moving all the time!

Don’t panic and it’s early days (although I know I always did!) But of course get checked out if/when you feel something really isn’t right.

AndSoFinally · 12/02/2022 04:51

It should tell you on your 12 week scan report where your placenta is lying

RainbowMum11 · 12/02/2022 04:57

With my second DD I had an anterior placenta so that muffled the feelings of the kicks etc
