Maternity leave and working bank shifts

I'm wondering if anyone can shed any light as I find conflicting information on the internet! I have my main job and I also have a bank contract for the nhs which I work a couple of weekends a month! When I go on mat leave for my main job in July am I allowed to work at my bank job on the odd weekend for extra money?? I've had the bank contract for years so way before baby is due etc! Thank you!

You can take maternity leave at different times for the 2 jobs. Will you qualify for SMP in your 2nd job or do you not earn enough?

I work nhs. I don't think you can. You can work 10 days as staying in touch days during maternity leave but that's it. Your HR department will know the answer for sure

Yes I'm sure she can if she has 2 jobs and she was already employed in the 2nd job even before her main job started

This has lots of info

If your main job is in the NHS it will say in the maternity leave policy in order to receive maternity pay you can not work alternative (second) employment. Or you risk having to pay back your maternity pay. Suggest you read the maternity leave policy to clarify

I had similar when I went on Mat leave and basically no. As soon as you undertake any paid employment your maternity leave automatically finishes. Be careful!

This is wrong if you read the link. If she was employed in both jobs at the 25th week of pregnancy then she can have different maternity leave and pay periods in both jobs and working in one job will not affect the maternity pay in the other job.

I think you can. My main employer is not nhs and I will be seeking maternity pay and smp from main employer. I also do bank work for NHS occasionally and will be doing some shifts with them while I'm on mat leave and claiming smp from my main employer.

To my knowledge, as long as you meet a certain criteria for the bank role - have been employed by the for a certain time etc, then you can still work for them and claim mat pay/smp from your main role.

Just ask HR to confirm

Ah @dementedpixie excuse me in that case. I worked bank in a second job (no set shifts) and was explicitly told I couldn’t do any when on Mat leave but obviously it could be different for OP!

sle0911 · 06/02/2022 19:22

Thank you all! My main job isn't NHS, just the bank job that is! And have been employed Im both jobs for years (so no issues with the certain amount of weeks before baby is due etc) It's quite confusing but I will speak to HR from both jobs to find out for sure! Thanks again! 😊

You'll need to check your local mat leave policies - some trusts/boards have restrictions on working bank shifts but I think there's some variability between policies...
