Miscarriage and weight/BMI

Hi,

I wanted to know, does anyone know if my miscarriage could have been caused by my weight? I'm approx 2 stone overweight with a BMI of 32. I don't feel overly healthy at this weight and know I need to lose weight. I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks. Would this be because I'm overweight? are women with a higher BMI more likely to miscarriage? i feel so nervous about trying again

A fair amount of research shows that bring obese does increase the risk of miscarriage. However I wouldn't assume that your weight is to blame - it's important to remember that something like 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage regardless!

I'm so sorry you miscarried but I really wouldn't blame myself if I were in your shoes, it is unfortunately just quite common and odds are your baby was just not compatible with life.

Being overweight is a risk factor but so are many other things, and sometimes there is no reason. I have a bmi around 35 so I'm worried my weight and age(39) will increase my risk.
I'm 9 weeks. Being overweight does increase the risk of miscarriage but only by a relatively small amount. Please don't blame yourself, at 6 weeks there is a 10 - 13% chance of miscarriage without any risk factors.

To put it in context I had a bmi of 23.8 and had to 2 miscarriages in a row both at 6 weeks. Weight might be a factor but probably a small one. I know plenty of women including my mother who had babies no problem while getting progressively heavier in between each pregnancy.

You said though that you dont feel healthy at this weight so it might be a good idea to lose some weight either when trying to conceive or in advance

Please don’t blame yourself. By all means make an effort to be healthier if it’ll make you feel better but I doubt very much that anything you did caused the miscarriage.

Thank you for your kindness everyone.

I guess I'm just beating myself up. This was a much wanted pregnancy, and I'm upset with myself for not being in the "perfect" position health wise beforehand.

There seems to be so much surrounding BMI, whereas I hadn't thought it would matter that much to be honest.
