Oh my gosh second trimester constipation is NOT OK!!
Prune juice has decided to completely disagree with me… any advice on how to get enough fibre in my body daily?! Thank you x

I feel your pain! Apricots are a really good source of fibre, 4 every day is helpful. I hate prunes but found blending them with apple juice to make a smoothie helped to... Get things moving. Also how much water are you drinking? I found it wasn't the fibre (I'm mostly plant based so eat a lot of veg) but it was also that I wasn't drinking enough water. Midwife recommended 2-3 litres a day and it makes a difference.

I also found making a diary of what helped/ hindered was useful. It didn't uncover anything ground breaking but was a motivator to not eat too much of what stopped things moving along because of the consequences!

Weetabix, ryvita, pears, oranges, apples, and especially lentils/beans. Nuts and avocado are good too if you like them. I’ve been really pushing myself to keep a diary and track my fibre as I suffered in the first trimester.

Water also makes a huge difference as @GrowBabyGrow said, I suffer if I don’t get close to 3L a day (it also helps me sleep better).

I started eating a kiwi every day (as advised by midwife) and it made a big difference!

All bran
Red lentil soup
Fresh orange juice with bits
Plenty of water

Works for me😂

I bought some fibre sachets at the chemist's. Just dissolve in water and drink, it doesn't taste of anything. And the next day - voilà!

Stew an apple, then add in 60g porridge oats (more or less depending on your hunger) a glass of milk or water, cinnamon, brown sugar and raisins.
Cook on the hob until liquid is absorbed and porridge is cooked.

I call it ape pie porridge. I craved it for a while during pregnancy and as an added bonus, the constipation that I had been suffering from magically cleared up. The morning after I had my first bowl of it I had the most comfortable and satisfying BM (sorry if tmi!)

Also drink lots of water.

Laxido can also be helpful, but can cause gas

Wheat bran - you can get sugar free, 100% wheat bran sticks online from a few health food shops and sometimes from Amazon (it looks like All bran but All bran has a lot of sugar added). It works really well.

Cocomelonearworm · 07/02/2022 12:00

Soluble fibre is good - found in foods like oats and apricots.

But drinking more water is probably the most effective thing you can do in my experience. You need so much hydration at this stage in the pregnancy.

FrontOfARobin · 07/02/2022 12:02

Oat bran is healthy and good for lowering cholesterol but I found it bunged me up, even though I drank loads of water. Wheat bran really helped the constipation though.

Linseeds sprinkled on stuff. Drink extra fluids with the meal.

CoalCraft · 07/02/2022 12:17

I started having malt wheat for breakfast daily and drinking water non stop. Made it bearable.

there are some beautiful Medjool and Zamli dates in the supermarkets at the moment. Like eating fudge. A punnet of them should sort you out, along with making sure you drink LOADS of water.

Catipepo · 07/02/2022 12:28

I have this everyday, mixed into my morning porridge. Could also be in smoothies etc.

I get it from Sainsburys
