Has anyone been sterilised during C Section?

As the title says really...

This is our 2nd baby and we both know for certain this will be our last. How difficult was it to get the Dr's to agree? Did you find the recovery any worse after section? Thanks! X

I was sterilised during my 4th csection. Doctors actually suggested it to me due to pregnancy complications. Recovery was no different.

Pinkywoo · 01/02/2022 19:46

I'm having a section in a few weeks and the consultant actually asked if I'd like to be sterilised at the same time. As we don't want more children and I'm 41 I agreed, so I certainly didn't need to persuade her!

booplefloof · 01/02/2022 19:53

I have.

Actually it was my gynecologist who suggested it when I was pregnant with DC3. I declined.

When I was pregnant with DC4, we talked about it a lot, and I decided it was what I wanted.

It was really easy, added a couple of minutes on to the whole procedure and a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders (I really did not want another child!). Has revolutionized our sex life!

Treesuphooray · 01/02/2022 19:54

My consultant suggested I be sterilised during my upcoming section. It wasn’t something I’d thought of or even wanted so I was very surprised!

I declined but it seems that it’s not uncommon.

I don’t know how it works though! Do they cut the fallopian tubes or something else?

ladygindiva · 01/02/2022 20:12

Yes I was sterilised when I had an elcs to deliver my twins, 2nd and 3rd dc. I was certain I didn't want anymore dc and it was very easy, met with no argument at all.

ladygindiva · 01/02/2022 20:13

Oh and my recovery was pretty standard, going by others versions.

forlornlorna · 01/02/2022 20:18

Yeah I did. I defo didn't want anymore and jumped at the chance

Hugasauras · 01/02/2022 20:51

Ooh I'm meeting consultant next week to discuss date for my section etc. Is this something that's routinely done on NHS? Will she think I'm weird if I bring it up?

Tigerlily08 · 01/02/2022 20:52

Ah amazing, My midwife made it sound like it was a huge ask and because I'm young (30) they would really need convincing to do it. I'm also T1 Diabetic, having problems with my eyes because of pregnancy and very happy with 2 children so hopefully they won't push back at all. She even asked me what if we had a stillborn or cot death 🙄 I know it's a risk but come on!

I was during my 3rd c section. The consultant recommended it. Its so liberating not worrying about contraception.

theremustonlybeone · 01/02/2022 21:07

I did after number 4. The procedure took so much longer as once baby is delivered they then need to procssed with the sterilisation and i hadnt appreciated how long it would take. So baby and daddy were waiting for the procedure to be completed before we could head off to post natal. I did find the recovery longer, i had actually forgotten i had been sterilised and couldnt understand why I was taking longer to recover. Glad i did it though

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 01/02/2022 21:08

I was asked ahead of my second c section (but pretty last minute so didn’t have time to consider it). I know someone else who had it done with their second. Pretty common I think.

Keepitrealnomists · 01/02/2022 21:20

This is so interesting, I didn't realise that this was a thing.... I am going to ask my consultant about it at my next app 😁

JustOneCup · 01/02/2022 21:22

Yes when I had fourth c section (second accreta)

Then regretted it and had a reversal and 2 more c sections

USaYwHatNow · 01/02/2022 21:23

As a midwife, that's a really shit and insensitive thing to say to a woman-how bloody rude!

At the trust where I work, they often suggest that sterilisation at C Section isn't done, as with everything stretching/settling down Etc. after being pregnant, there is a risk that it may not be as effective, basically there's a risk that the fallopian tubes can come back together again . If a mother is adamant they would like it done at C-Section, then they will also insert an IUD/coil as an extra precaution.

I thi k if that's your decision then I would 100% have a discussion with your consultant, and seek a second opinion if you want to after that if you feel necessary, especially with your medical history.

Closedlips · 01/02/2022 21:25

I was asked when pregnant with my second, despite being 26 which I thought was a bit odd! It was my husband's third so maybe it was something to do with that.

PurplePansy05 · 01/02/2022 21:27

What does this entail? And can you have a full reversal and more children, I didn't realise you could?

Can I ask those of you who had it, do you still have periods and is there a possibility of an earlier menopause as a result, please?

Tigerlily08 · 01/02/2022 21:31

@USaYwHatNow Thank you, that's really insightful and helpful. I'm hoping to avoid contraception if possible but will take a coil if it's the only option.

Thank you all for your stories, I'm relieved I hopefully won't have to prepare for battle before asking 😅

I’ve actually requested this! I’m younger than you (27, will be 28 then) and it’s our first and only.
It’s slightly different for me as I’m an IVF pregnancy so I actually need one tube out already. I requested it and the midwife didn’t actually agree with me but still made the referral.

The consultant has declined the request to discuss and has officially said on my notes that I can agree on the day so It looks like it’s going ahead! He has all the notes and reasoning and I was clear I wanted them out (not clamped etc).

I’ve found you need to be firm and stand by what you want them to do!

I was sterilised aged 28 when I had my Third baby (third c-section). They were fine with it but did explain I was quite young. I however was adamant that I didn't want any more children.

Unfortunately the risk that they told you here happened to me. My baby girl died at 11 months old.

Here I am 8 years later pregnant having had to go through IVF as my sterilisation couldn't be reversed and we longed for another child.

So unfortunately that risk is real

winnieanddaisy · 01/02/2022 21:38

I wasn't sterilised after a c section but I was sterilised a couple of days after my 3rd baby in 2 and a half years. I begged the consultant. He asked but what if I lost the baby or if it was still born . I told him that I still wanted it to go ahead . He agreed. I was 22 at the time . I never once regretted my decision .

Namenic · 01/02/2022 21:51

I requested a c section with sterilisation for my 3rd - instead of induction for reduced movements. But During discussion with obstetrician I was told that sterilisation was less effective when just after c section. Vasectomy is more effective. She said that it was likely that my body would respond to hormones during induction as I had uncomplicated pregnancy. It did work out well in our case - had no tears or complications.

fallfallfall · 01/02/2022 21:52

@PurplePansy05, years ago the dr (gynecologist surgeon) did the c/s for child #3 (in less than 2 years) once the baby is born he located the fallopian tubes and cut out a section and burned (cauterized) the ends.
eggs that are formed in the ovaries cant travel far down the tube and are reabsorbed. never to be fertilized by sperm.
generally it is considered irreversible. so no going back.
it does not affect menopause
some claim it affects periods in that they become heavier BUT that is a myth and it is thought the heavier periods are due to age and having had multiple children.
periods come as usual as it does not affect the hormone cycle.

JustOneCup · 01/02/2022 22:03

I had had my tubes cut and tied and cauterised (I think it was Called a modified pomeroy technique?)

Reversals are more successful after clips if w woman changes her mind so I wasn’t hopeful but I was lucky it worked.

I think the key thing with sterilisation at the time of c section is to get lots of info and make the decision well in advance (not 2 days before as an unwell inpatient like I did

Namenic · 01/02/2022 22:09

Oh I meant that I had the induction in the end but didn’t get complications from that. I would have wanted a sterilisation, but I guess now it’s an extra operation and less effective than vasectomy, so probably won’t do it.
